California's legislature passed at least a dozen criminal justice reform bills just over the past few weeks, enough to make it hard to keep it all straight!

They include a ban on facial recognition, sentencing reform, expanded expungement. So here's a thread on some of them.
1. Legislature voted to ban private prisons & private immigration detention centers (currently have capacity to detain 4,500 immigrants). theguardian.com/us-news/2019/s…

(IL adopted similar measure this year: appealpolitics.org/2019/illinois-…)
2. Expunging past convictions provides huge benefits, but process is so complex few of those eligible apply. A new bill automates some of process, but only for post-2021 offenses. courthousenews.com/bill-to-help-s…

Hate to see GEO Group take a hit like this. (We actually love to see it.)
One down, one to go (as to this tweet). A vote on #SB136 could come as soon as this hour.
For more on #SB136, which would end a sentencing enhancement in California that costs the state millions with no clear ties to increased safety, see this thread:

Less than an hour into the California Assembly meeting today to consider a ton of legislation — including #SB136, which I discuss below — there was an outburst in the visitors' gallery that led the speaker to call for a recess.

Yes, I saw Trump’s absurd series of tweets regarding criminal justice change. Ironically, they deserve more of a response than he deserves or could ever give. For starters: It’s disgusting how Trump always, always attacks Black men by name and criticizes women like he’s in 1950.
As for the rest, I imagine there will be much more to say. Suffice it to say, the First Step Act is literally a First Step. It is not “Criminal Justice Reform.” And Obama wanted it passed — with GOP support — but McConnell was unwilling to hold a vote.
And on the other end of the spectrum, outside of the First Step Act, Trump and his Justice Department are trying their damnedest to do all they can do to stymie, malign, halt, or reverse other criminal legal system reform efforts.

WHAT I’M WATCHING: On Monday, the California Assembly is expected to vote on #SB136, a bill to repeal an odd one-year sentencing enhancement that is clearly not linked to any evidence-based policy. leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavC…
#SB136 would eliminate a rigid sentencing enhancement that sits atop many others in CA & can add years to a person’s sentence based on prior sentences served, regardless of what the sentence was or whether the new charges are at all similar. From @vgullap: theappeal.org/california-has…
We've talked a lot about family separation over the past two years, but so much family separation happening in this country is the result of mass incarceration — and we need to have that discussion, too.
