Hi @GregAbbott_TX ! A federal judge just dismissed a case brought by employees of Houston Methodist Hospital who rejected the vaccine mandate of their employer. Will you take action? Call a special session! Ban vaccine passports/mandates!
A lot of people are asking about #SB968 which Abbott signed. That bill is weak and why details matter. Florida’s bill, #SB2006 not only includes businesses, but it also prohibits all schools from requiring vaccines and the enforcement mechanism is strict: $5,000 fine per person.
The Texas bill doesn’t include schools and the enforcement mechanism is weaker: no state funds and the state could possibly* revoke a business license/permit. The bill also doesn’t mention the employer/employee relationship which is why we have the above lawsuit & crisis.

Midnight deadline for House to pass Senate bills officially passes without vote on #SB29, trans student athlete bill #txlege
Another @DanPatrick priority that fell victim to the deadline: #SB12, blocking social media companies from banning Texans for political views #txlege
Worth noting #SB12 was a @GovAbbott priority by all appearances as well. He has tweeted about it multiple times and traveled to Tyler to promote it in March. DeSantis, a gubernatorial yardstick for some Abbott critics, signed a similar bill Monday.

No, it wasn’t. The City took 2 votes. First was a vote to accept the staff’s recommendation Planning Commission’s approval of the expansion and deny the appeal. It deadlocked 2-2.

Next, the Council took a vote to approve the appeal and deny the permit. It also deadlocked. 1/3
Then the City Attorney, who failed to correct GEO GC’s representation that GEO would consider indemnification (Negron himself told the City’s Attorney GEO wouldn’t foot the legal bills of the City in Feb 2019) decided unilaterally that the Planning Commission’s action stands. 2/3
That appears to be wrong for at least 2 reasons. 1. Once an appeal of an approved permit goes to the Council, Adelanto’s Code (Title 17) says “City Council SHALL BE THE FINAL APPROVAL AUTHORITY FOR ALL ACTIONS.” Planning Commish isn’t Council. So it lacks authority to approve 3/4 ImageImage

Truly amazing municipal govt story intersecting with business and immigration and federal law happening right now in the City of Adelanto.
Sequence so far: Councilman who brought up the vote to expand GEO facility claims this is all his idea.

Council now cuts comment 3m to 2M Image
Reasoning: They’ve received emails from across the nation. Thinking this could happen for 5 hrs, given the numbers of comments council has received.
You can hear the Mayor acknowledging the gravity of the moment. “This is a VERY big item for the future of the City of Adelanto.”

CM Jeanette wants to hear from residents.

Tonight, the McFarland city planning commission will hear public comment from community residents on whether private prison companies can expand their detention apparatus in California.

This is in violation of CA law.

In 2017, @MigrantFreedom & @the_ILRC helped draft and co-sponsor #SB29, a law that clearly states no CA city, county, or public agency can approve a permit to expand immigration detention without fulfilling two requirements:
@the_ILRC 1.) The public must be adequately notified at least 180 days before the permit is approved 2.) The city holds two separate public hearings to solicit input from the community #PeopleOverProfits
