One of the things I wanted to talk about this week is using comedy to communicate science! It's a major passion of mine, and it's pretty fun too.
Einstein famously said that if you can't explain something simply, you don't understand it well enough. But I think it goes further- to me, making something funny is one of the highest levels of understanding.
That's why I started #BrightClub in Ireland: a variety night where half the acts are comedians, and half are academic researchers using comedy to explain their work.

So the science/dance event last night went great! Here's me and Deidre beforehand, looking less nervous than we were:
It was really wonderful to see people from both arts and science backgrounds coming together to explore ideas. Creativity and inquiry are so central to both pursuits! #STEAM #STEM…
We have one more performance tonight, exploring the science of the very small as part of #ScienceWeek @nuigalway:…

I first heard about the possibility of doing a science/art residency, on a tall ship no less, in the Arctic!!! while I was on the job market. It sounded absolutely amazing, and I was just applying for things left and right, so I thought sure I'll apply for this.
I was so surprised when I was accepted to go up to Svalbard, for the summer solstice 2017! I have always loved Arctic exploration stories, and extreme landscapes, and science/art collaborations, and TAKING TO THE SEA!
The idea was to bring scientists and artists together, at the edge of the world, to talk about how humanity is changing our planet and what we can do about it. We had people from physics, biology, film, painting, writing, dance...

And of course, I am working with a choreographer right now on a nanoscience/dance performance which will take place Thursday/Friday as part of #ScienceWeek! You can find more info here:…
We had the first rehearsal last night where I got to see all the dance pieces together, and it was INCREDIBLE seeing how bodies and movement were used to illustrate quantum physics. True #STEAM. I loved it.
The choreographer is not on twitter, but her name is Deidre Cavazzi from @SaddlebackColl and she's an absolute joy to work with. I am really honoured that she chose to spend part of her sabbatical here.

Now it's time for me to get to dance rehearsal! Not a normal feature of my week, but this is #ScienceWeek and special things are afoot!
Working in nanoscience and quantum physics, I spend a lot of time thinking how these concepts can be illustrated clearly! Because they sure aren't intuitive.
But one way to show these concepts is through movement and dance! So I am working with a choreographer, and some wonderful dancers, to try to make that happen...

Hi! My name is Jessamyn, I am a scientist and comedian and a lot of other things too, and very excited to be tweeting here for #ScienceWeek!
If you love science, there will be LOTS of science from me this week. But also gonna talk about comedy, arts/science, teaching, culture, and maybe some cat pics too.
A bit about me: I'm not Irish but I've been living in Ireland for the last 7 years: 5 in Dublin and the last 2 in Galway. I moved here after grad school and I loooove it.
