A quick sample of initial reactions...

We're clearly going to be hearing a lot about #LegitimateInterests, as well as #commercial and #public ones. The real question being, how do this Government's interests actually align with YOURS?

140+ pages on a Friday is a lot to digest, but @lilianedwards' "penumbra of often futile determinedly populist ideas largely not evidence-based" seems entirely consistent with @DCMS's Drunkard's Walk through #data and #ID this past year...

China unveils 600 kph/370 mph High Speed Superfast #maglevtrain prototype makes public #debut, "Fastest Ground #Vehicle Globally": Report
Using electro-magnetic force, #maglev #TRAIN "levitates" above track & no contact between body and rail.
#Thread #tech #technology #Transport
China has been using maglev technology for almost 2 decades on very limited scale. Maglev train could go from Shanghai to #Beijing in 2.5 hours, versus 5.5 hours by high-speed rail. Self-developed by China and manufactured in coastal city of #Qingdao. @CRRC_global new model.
Cutting-edge #scientific and technological achievement in field of #railway transit in world. Train uses electromagnets to suspend itself above rails, and because there's no friction from contact with rail lines, train can run quietly and smoothly. Unveiled in glittery ceremony.

Britain has more job #vacancies than can be filled by the native workforce. That, in a nutshell, is why we need #migrants and millions of them. #Brexit was a con. Watch this 1½-minute video. Read my report on Facebook: bit.ly/3jutvuf LinkedIn: bit.ly/3hjBHLf
It's not just vacancies. Britain has more JOBS than Britons to do them. That's why we need millions of migrants. It really is that simple. Why else would the government offer 3 million Hong Kong citizens the right to come to the UK? Leave voters were misled... big time.
Our country has an ageing population, and a low birth rate. So, the truth is that we have to import young people and skilled (and many unskilled) people to do the jobs that we don’t have enough Britons to fill. The government, of course, knows this only too well.

A #government out of control
The commitment that the #UK government gives 0.7% of its GDP as overseas aid is enshrined in law. #Johnson’s government decided to cut this to 0.5%, but didn’t need to put this to parliament because the cut was supposed to be temporary.
A large number of Conservative MPs were unhappy with this, and wanted to use parliament to reverse this cut. The parliament’s #speaker ruled their attempt invalid, but requested the #government to allow a vote on the issue. The government refused.

1/ I think saying that NIH financially sponsored #WuhanLab is same as saying that #China, a #world superpower, could not afford it. So who did the #money really go to? Let's look at the interests of the main #actors here. Just a thought #experiment based on insufficient data. 🧐
2/ Enter "A" (the U.S.), "B" (#China) and "C" (NIH/UNC/EcoHealth GoF Network):
- A is all high-tech and #scientific breakthroughs;
- B (naturally) partially emulates that and got a permanent hard-on for blueprints;
- C loves grants, fundraising, publications, #fame and new toys.
3/ C reaches out to B and says "how about we get you bleeding edge #virus #design #tech and make it look completely legit?" What was #China supposed to say? "No, thank you, we're good?"
What's in it for A? Well, the U.S. can provide grants to C to work on how to get more grants. Image

What went wrong in the global governance of #covid-19?
kabbasi@bmj.com
After two million deaths, we must have redress for mishandling the #pandemic
Murder is an emotive word. In law, it requires premeditation. Death must be deemed to be unlawful. How could “murder” apply to failures of a pandemic response?
Perhaps it can’t, and never will, but it is worth considering. When #politicians and #experts say that they are willing to allow tens of thousands of premature deaths for the sake of population immunity or in the hope of propping up the economy,

Removal of HEC chairman: Let us think beyond personalities. The #PoliticalEconomy of #HigherEducation in #Pakistan is such that whoever had challenged the status quo, system would have turned against him/her. I think following led the removal of chairman #HEC
1) #HEC R&D grants system was revamped to fund those projects only which had an impact (determined by peer review). #HEC Closed many projects which failed peer review.
2) set up #disciplinary panels for peer review headed by well-reputed scholars such as Dr Zulfiqar Bhutta, Dr Noman ul Haq, Dr Tariq Hassan, Dr Sarosh Lodhi etc., to make fund/no-fund decisions in Committee.

How might science be safeguarded in these exceptional times? The first step is full disclosure of competing interests from #government, #politicians, #scientific advisers, and #appointees,
such as the heads of #Test& Trace, diagnostic test procurement, and #vaccine delivery.
The next step is full transparency about decision making systems, processes, and knowing who is accountable for what.
Once transparency and accountability are established
as norms, individuals employed by #government should ideally only work in areas unrelated to their competing interests.
Expertise is possible without competing interests.

On 24 March 2020, the Financial Times claimed that as much as half of the #British population may have already been infected by the novel #Coronavirus, according to a new model by #Oxford University’s Evolutionary Ecology of Infectious Disease group.
The conclusion, according to the FT’s science editor Clive Cookson, suggested that the country “had already acquired substantial herd immunity through the unrecognised spread of #COVID-19 over more than two months”. If true, this would vindicate the Govt’s “unofficial
Herd immunity strategy – allowing controlled spread of infection,” he stated
Although numerous #epidemiologists and #scientists had questioned the validity of the #Oxford model – which had not been peer-reviewed – it was promoted to the press by a PR agency with ties to the #Gov

Little is known about the interests of the #doctors, #scientists, and #academics on whose advice the #UK #government relies to manage the #pandemic.
Attempts to discover more are frequently thwarted, finds Paul D Thacker
As the number of UK deaths caused by #covid-19 reached 50 000 in early Nov, England enacted a second national lockdown to control the epidemic.
Boris Johnson’s government put these measures into action after months of controversial and sometimes confusing policies,
including the “rule of six,” regional tiered controls, and directions to “stay alert.”
At the same time, the #govt has faced mounting questions about #procurement decisions, from personal protective equipment #PPE to #testing kits, from #vaccine deals

#Covid-19:
politicisation, “corruption,” and suppression of science
When good science is suppressed by the medical-political complex, people die

#Politicians and #governments are suppressing #science.
They do so in the public interest, they say, to
accelerate availability of diagnostics and treatments.
They do so to support #innovation, to bring products
to market at unprecedented speed.
Both of these reasons are partly plausible;
the greatest deceptions are founded in a grain of truth. But the underlying behaviour is troubling.
#Science is being suppressed for #political and #financial gain. #Covid-19 has unleashed state corruption on a grand scale, and it is harmful to #public health.
