After my tweet about #Query Letters I received many DMs. Is shocking how many #screenwriters dont know how or havent tried to query.
So it's šŸ§µ time!
Disclaimer: Theres no ONE right way to query! These are just MY tips/advice as someone who's read thousands & written hundreds...
Let's start w/ the Subject Heading in ur email.
1. If u have a referral or personal contact, use that - "Thriller Writer Referred by __"
2. Use big award-placement. "2022 Nicholl Semifinal Script"
3. Or just a title works (have a intriguing/clever title!)
4. Never say QUERY.
For your greeting, you better know their name & spell it correctly. No "To Whom it May Concerns" & no cutesy "Dear Gatekeeper" shit. Know who you're sending it to. Use imdbpro. Dont bother sending it to anyone over VP level, more likely a CE, Story Editor or Assistant.

10 things I wish they taught me in film school, #screenwriter edition. šŸ§µ
1.Networking is a long-term game.

It might seem like getting ā€˜accessā€™ to industry gatekeepers is the most important thing. It is not. Building a genuine, long-term relationship is.
2.Competitions are a tool, not a goal.

Every new writer should enter competitions, but placements are only helpful if you go out and use them to hustle.

Hey #screenwriters- Are differentiated characters and dialogue a challenge? Or conflict itself? I just read this MIND-BLOWING book about types of behaviour, how they are seen by others, body language, and how to stress the types TF out. THREAD 1/
So Iā€™m going to share takeaways to help you crack the ā€œI need conflictā€ or ā€œmy characters are too similarā€ or ā€œthe dialogue sounds the sameā€ or ā€œNo idea how my character would move through the world.ā€ 2/
Also you can learn a lot about yourself and why you are misunderstood. The book is Surrounded by Idiots by Thomas Erikson. I/m about 2/3rd through and itā€™s so helpful I had to share it with yā€™all and then explain why it will ramp up your conflict. 3/

#Screenwriters, besides the writing, prepare for future success by having these 5 things ready. 1. HEADSHOT: high rez photo. Your face is fully visible, you look normal, and are well lit. Doesnā€™t have to be expensive-ask a friend. No selfies or improv face. See Actor/Writers.
2. BIOS: Have three variants/versions. This is single spaced.

-Short: 50-100 words, 1/8-1/4 page
-Medium: 100-300 words, 1/2 page
-Long: 300+ words, 3/4-full page

These are rough estimates. Donā€™t worry if you donā€™t have much, you will soon.
3. CONTACT METHOD that isnā€™t social media. More trad places donā€™t do it. They wanna email or call you.

At min have a static, 1-2 page website.

Best if you have your own domain name but that costs $. For now use Wix, Squarespace, and Yola, for free.

IMHO thatā€™s doing a disservice to whatever project youā€™re working on and ultimately making your process more difficult.

The Four Different Types of True Story Scripts

There are four different types of true stories that #screenwriters can research, develop, and write. And each of them comes with its own freedoms, restrictions, constraints, and benefits.

The characters, storylines, and most scenes are primarily based on actual occurrences. There are creative liberties taken for sure, but most of the depictions within the script are based on what actually happened and how it happened.
Films like Schindlerā€™s List, The Right Stuff, Lincoln, 127 Hours, and Apollo 13 are excellent examples of screenplays that did their best to depict the actual true stories.

I'm imagining a sci-fi world that incorporates several fully-realized AI implementations while preparing this week's #PapersThatMakeYouGoHmmm list.

Bunch of shit! I had this idea for a movie where Daniel plays a "doctor Frankenstein" type character and turns me into a spiderman. That was the original concept

I also had this short I wrote about 4 friends that go camping to try to film a Chupacabra and get attacked by zombies (wrote that before the whole Dawn of the Dead/Shawn of the dead zombie movie craze started and sorta' lost the drive to do it).

Hey #Screenwriters. At some point in your #screenwriting career, youā€™re going to need to write what I call your ā€œFuck Itā€ script. That script where you donā€™t worry about anything/anyone and just write a unique/original (but cinematic) script that YOU want to seešŸ‘Š@screencrafting
And hereā€™s the thing. The ā€œfuck itā€ script is the one where you donā€™t let any industry person try to change (until itā€™s sold, maybe). Itā€™s the one where you just find the person that sees your vision and falls in love with it for what it is. Still has to be brilliant thoughšŸ˜œ
And, look, if ANYTHING, it will re-energize you and your writing. You may not outright sell it, but man oh man, it feels SO good to write a ā€œFuck Itā€ script.šŸ˜

Get a portfolio said the writing panel/advice/speaker in what is the latest throwaway simple advice that instantly builds a careerā€¦. So, letā€™s talk about them.

1)Portfolios are NOT magic. Simply having one doesn't get you a job. Tey are a tool to be used in chasing work and an increasing number of employers ask for them. Having one can be very useful, but just putting some bits of writing in the same place does not = instant career.
2) People tend to read your email first, then your c.v. and then portfolio. Mess up stages 1, or 2 and 3 may well not matter. Always rework your email, c.v. and portfolio for EVERY application. Focus on what matches that job/company.
