Independent India has always been a vibrant democracy, except for the #Emergency years of #IndiraGandhi from 1975-77. That it has taken a decisive turn to religious majoritarianism under the #BJP and under #Modi since 2014 doesn't change that fact. (1/)
Democracy is not necessarily congruent with liberal values or even human rights. #Slavery was legal both in the democracy of Great Britain as well as the USA for almost a hundred years since the US' formation. Even a White woman was not considered equal to a man in America. (2/)
#Blacks in the #US did not have equal rights even after the abolition of slavery for another 100 years under #Lincoln, but we still think of the US in #1960 as a democracy.

Sundays are devoted to free therapy for HCWs and COVID Grief. Was using #emdr with a young Health Care Worker posted to the #COVID ward during the #secondwave. During this time one of the deceased’s relatives, in a grief-stricken state, had attacked the HCW and beaten her
She faced and witnessed several more such attacks against her and other staff. As the intense pressure of the COVID wards eased by June, she experienced PTSD symptoms and found it increasingly difficult to go back to the COVID wards.
She felt unsafe in the PPE kit due to reduced visibility and felt she might be attacked from behind. She had nightmares, palpitations and intense fear, but continued to work due to the demand.

A 3rd wave of covid infections in India is unavoidable and may hit the country within 8 weeks, AIIMS chief Dr. Randeep Guleria said. The vitality of the new wave however, would depend upon vaccination coverage and level of adherence to COVID-19 protocols.
newsbytesapp.com/news/india/aii…
Dr. Guleria added, "As we have started unlocking, there is again a lack of COVID-appropriate behavior. We don't seem to have learned from what happened between the 1st and the 2nd wave." He further said, "It all depends on how we go ahead in terms of COVID-appropriate behavior."
So will this wave affect children more? A recent seroprevalence study was done by #WHO and AIIMS on 10,000 samples. Citing that, the Indian govt asserted that the level of antibodies was similar in both adults and children. So, the new wave might affect every age group equally.

A total disregard for COVID protocols will hasten the 3rd wave of the pandemic, the Delhi High Court warned today noting violations in Delhi following easing of curbs. The court has asked the Centre and the Delhi govt to submit status reports over this.
newsbytesapp.com/news/india/del…
The HC has took suo motu cognizance of the issue after a doctor from Delhi's AIIMS shared images of overcrowded markets. The court asked govt to take strict measures against violators and sensitize sellers. It also directed to deploy police in markets to enforce social distancing
"The memory of the second wave has not left us, yet people behave in this manner. This is very unfortunate," a bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Asha Menon commented. "There is a need for strict measures to prevent further spread of COVID-19 infection." #covidupdates

India affected much as rest of world
Worst pandemic since 100 years
Modern world has not seen or experienced such a crisis
But India has fought back. testing, PPE, labs covid wards, new health infratructue created
Built so many oxygen plants
Never experienced such a demand for oxygen
Oxygen trians, air force planes, navy ships. raised production 10-fold.
have acquired equipment from all over the world.
imported medicines from all over
left no stone unturned
Lots of military references
Covid protocol has been our biggest weapon
vaccines are our greatest #kavach = armour
imagine what would have been the sit if India had not been such a big vaccine producer.

Hey dude, the fact that countries generously donated to help #India fight #COVID19 #SecondWave, is not the credit of the Indian government. Its to their credit and it’s a failure of the government to be so unprepared for the second wave!
It’s not entirely true that Indian government failed to vaccinate people in the 70s and 80s. In cooperation with @WHO, #India managed to eradicate #SmallPox by 1988. That was a huge achievement and this speech just belittles that!
yes #India did come up with #COVID19 #Vaccine in a record time, but to claim that this is #IndianExceptionalism is untrue. Making a #COVID19Vaccine in record time wouldn’t have been possible without global collaboration. If anything Covid showed exceptionalism isn’t the way.

All indications from the coronavirus numbers in India in the last two weeks suggest that the second wave of infections may already have reached a peak, or will peak in the next few days, but end may still be far away.

After reaching a high of 4.14 lakh last Thursday, the daily cases has dropped significantly in the last 1 week. This is not happening for the first time. After crossing 4 lakh mark for the first time on April 30, the case count had gone down for a few days, before jumping again. Image
#Maharashtra, which at one point was contributing more than 60% of daily cases, certainly seems to be in a declining phase now. The decline in Maharashtra is likely to have the biggest impact on the national curve.

Why all health staff, Sr xitizen didn't queue up 4 #vaccine in Feb-March? Centres wr idle. Data proves, Thr ws not equal push from all states either. All rushed 4 vax as #SecondWave struck. As in end April 50% on queue for vax wr above 60. This contributed to overcrowding. 2/n
Yes thr is now a #VaccineShortage. But part of it is perceived. Do we have enough manpower & other necessary infra to inoculate 3 USAs (90cr adult) at one go? V got feb-april. Cud USA vaccinate all in 3 months? On April 18, only 50% Americans wr vaccinated. De started ahead. 3/n

#WhatsApp myths about #India's slow sputtering #Covid #Vaccination program. Let's bust them one by one.
1. Vaxx shortages are because of our ambitious aim to make it available to the 18-44 age group as well (Phase3)
A. Hang on. why then are the total No. of doses falling
2. It's all those bloody lefty anti-Modi intellectuals who criticised Covaxin and generated all those negative vibrations. That led to #VaxxHesitancy.
A. Well firstly, Covaxin was approved on Jan 3 w/o a shred of data on efficacy. science.thewire.in/health/dcgi-cd…
Secondly, similar widespread criticism of AZ trials did not affect Britain's rollout of the vaccine, did it. The difference was Britain had a truly independent regulator.

That is a boastful message about India's covid vaccination programme. - the World's largest is the claim. Well it bloody well ought to be the world's largest given that India is almost the MOST populous country (China is a whisker ahead may be, who knows?).
But is it also the world's fastest, as has been claimed elsewhere?
Next, lets look the Press release from @MoHFW_INDIA pib.gov.in/PressReleasePa…

Dire warning from Dr Darayus Gazder, a young doctor in #Karachi: Second wave is very strong, patients are highly critical and sick. We have a waiting list of over 10 per bed. People are dying/suffering alone w no one to say goodbye!
It's painful
1/n
Some deteriorate within minutes. Others who survive COVID have permanent severe #lung damage, can't eat a single meal w/o high flow oxygen, later die painfully as if #drowning once respiratory/cardiac muscles can't compensate as oxygen is depleted.
- Dr Darayus Gazher 2/n
Educated people should take this seriously. But they are Instead throwing parties, weddings, going to sports events, malls, shopping, eating out with no precautions, even mocking the disease. This selfish behaviour must end as it endangers ALL age groups
