The purpose of the #Passover #seder: A Mini-Thread

The purpose of the seder is to cultivate radical empathy for human suffering. It is to awaken to the pain of our enslaved and brutalized ancestors as we read the post potent words in the Hagadah-the Passover story:

1/
Avadim Hayinu.

We were slaves in Egypt.

We.

Not them.

Us.

This is personal.

2/
We call upon our youngest children-the most vulnerable people in the room-to DEMAND from the adults seated around the table to answer their questions:

Why?

Why must we do this?

Why must we tell this story?

Why is this night different from all other nights?

36.02/ Last night, my wife showed me this NYTimes story about Jewish N*ziHunting ladies during WW2. It's a venn diagram of everything awesome!

36.03/ Mentioned to my brother @acypess this morning that Biden has a superpower to (a) make his positions sound moderate & reasonable no matter what, which then (b) drives his opponents crazy in frustration. E.g. Putin & #MoscowMitch recently, challenging him to duels & whatnot.

MINI-THREAD: #Biblical #Chronology, the #Seder #Olam, and the #LXX.

TITLE: Too long in #Lockdown.

SUB-TITLE: ...although at least I now have multiple ways to calculate how long I’ve been here...
I’m presently working my way through the Seder Olam--a 2nd cent. AD (or so I’m told) Rabbinic text which deals with the chronology of Scripture.

I highly recommend it.

Below is an interesting phenomen I’ve observed.
The author (Rabbi Yose) likes to ‘back out’ (i.e., infer) absent numbers from long-term measurements of time.

Or at least that’s how it looks to me.

2020, The Night Before

Envisioning this life threatening
invisible invasion now as if it were
another terrible plague of Egypt
passing over a too narrow place,

/1
We, together apart, experience
trauma along with our forebears in
this disorienting, dreadful darkness,
meanspirited realms of selfishness
& senseless violence, driven by
magical thinking pharaohs who play
power games disturbing the delicate
balance of universal law & order,

/2
& bring on pestilence & suffering.

We ask our four questions and do our
best to conceive of the inconceivable
in the retelling of our birth story while
waiting for our honored guest, Elijah,
who will herald the early morning light.

My mom asked to borrow my 2 folding tables...how many people are coming to this Seder...?
Well that answers the question...
Seder paused because one of the tables collapsed (not one if mine, for the record). #Seder
