Next up, I’m listening to @theSENDcast with Dale Pickles (Great name) from @BSquaredLtd
open.spotify.com/episode/2VJlmK… here’s a 🧵THREAD of almost everything they said… #SEND
In this episode, ‘High Quality Teaching for SEND’ Dale interviews Gary Aubin @SENDMattersUK aka ‘the Lone SENDCO.’ Gary is SEND content specialist for EEF.
@EducEndowFoundn and creates/curates Sendmatters.co.uk
First, Dale asks : Is it high quality teaching or is it quality first teaching? Gary: the SEND code of practice uses ‘high quality teaching.’ But the two things mean the same thing.
What about differentiation vs inclusive / adaptive teaching? Can you articulate what these mean?

Thread for ‘but is this happening in schools’ #Edutwitter. Yes it is. Firstly personal testimony: “the school nurse had referred her to the school counsellor [who] informed [her] that a hatred of one’s breasts could be an indicator of a non-binary” safeschoolsallianceuk.net/our-stories/ou…
More testimony: “I am utterly horrified at what was taught at a PSHE lesson at my school recently. It was to a group of children, most are 11-12 years old. It is so, so much worse than I thought.” #Edutwitter #DiverseEd #LGBT

On 23 November, staff and parents at Bright Start Council-run Nursery in #Brighton, were suddenly told the nursery was closing, so @BrightonHoveCC could make cuts and 'protect and support the city's most vulnerable'. A🧵on #austerity, local govt & the #SaveBrightStart campaign:
The initial reaction of parents and staff was bewilderment. As the council's own equalities assessment shows, 38% of Bright Start kids have special educational needs or disabilities #SEND. Those kids *are* vulnerable; private nurseries often turn them away because of cost of care Equalities impact: Child Poverty –17 % of the children at
We were too late to get any questions in to @BrightonHoveCC's Policy & Resources Cmttee, but spent the week emailing councillors, some of whom answered by pointing to Tory #austerity impacting council budgets, while others had no idea Bright Start was tabled for closure at all

Going into my 20th year of teaching next week! Here are my top #ECT tips for meeting the needs of #SEND students.

Starting with the obvious, find out everything you can about them. Read their pupil profiles and/or EHCPs, highlighting the key info./1
If you are a primary teacher of a student with an EHCP, find time to phone parents/carers at the start of term. This could be the day before school starts to introduce yourself, or a couple of days in to ask how they’re settling in. /2
Talk to the teacher(s) they had last year. Find out what worked and what didn’t in terms of supporting them. Ask the SENCO for a 10-minute chat: what can you tell me about ______? Look at their work if possible, to get a sense of strengths and challenges. /3

Yesterday @educationgovuk released the data on pupils with special educational needs and disability (#SEND) for this academic year. The information is provided by local authorities' and schools' returns from across England. I have had a look at the @BhamCityCouncil data. 1/20 🧵 Image
The headline figures are that in England the number of pupils with an education health care plan (EHCP) have risen from 3.7% to 4%. In Birmingham the same figures have risen from 3.4% to 3.5%. On the face of it, the lower percentage looks good for the city... 2/20
Looking at the figures we could assume that fewer pupils in Birmingham 'need' an EHCP than is the case in the rest of the country. Of course the key issue is whether the lower numbers reflect an absence of 'need' or an under of identification of 'need'. 3/20

New @NAHTnews president @paulgosling1968 asks what century are we living in’ over rising food bank use

"When I became headteacher 13 years ago, the number of children receiving free school meals was around thirty per cent. In the January census 2022, that figure was forty-five per cent. The rise in poverty in my community is shocking and stark."

A short thread 🧵 about Samuel & Jacob's case, and the use of #restraint against children with autism, learning disabilities or #SEND.

The parents Annie & Mark aren't on Twitter but want to raise as much awareness as possible.

leighdaylaw.info/3tHEuoZ
1. We brought a civil & #HumanRightsAct case against Kent County Council for the use of mechanical restraint chairs against Samuel & Jacob while they were at a specialist primary school for autistic children, Five Acre Woods School.
2. Sam & Jacob were active, sensory seeking children who loved climbing, running around & being outside. They were non-verbal & struggled to communicate. Here they are out walking with their dad, Mark, at the time they attended the school (all photos used with permission).

Mechanical restraint chairs used in this manner are inhumane, degrading & traumatic for children.

Kent County Council admitted it failed to consider less restrictive options than #restraint.

The boys received an apology & £40,000 damages each for false imprisonment and pain and suffering.

Full statement on why colleagues and I are voting against the cuts in this year’s budget:

As a matter of personal conscience and political judgement, we have come to the decision that we have no choice but to vote against this year’s Liverpool City Council budget on 2nd March.
We have supported attempts to draw up proposals that would amount to a no-cuts alternative. All these efforts have been rejected. The main elements of the budget are largely unchanged since the beginning of the consultation process.
We can’t accept that the recommended level of funds held in reserve for 2022/3 should rise by £10.7m when the city faces brutal cuts.

3) sugar, we will make tea, and have our dinner”. I asked her address, and she was afraid. I didn’t have enough money atm, but I did buy her green tea, sugar, and little beans. I couldn’t take her photo in the store as it could attract attention towards me. I couldn’t follow her

I genuinely believe MATs could play a key role in innovating the #SEND system. This is a biased view.
MATs already lead the way on many areas of innovation in schools - curriculum, assessment, teacher training, school improvement /2
Some of the Directors of #SEND and #Inclusion I know are really experienced and dedicated leaders and they work alongside heads trying to do their best. People like @Nic_Crossley1 and @simontanner_SEN - there are many others /4

Evidence from 6 visits to local areas, looking at their special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) provision between 5 and 14 October 2020: Overall, children, young people and their families have had mixed experiences
through this period. #SEND
Some families have felt isolated, with limited contact from
schools and services. Others shared a huge amount of praise for the health practitioners, social workers, local authority family support workers and school staff
who had supported their children.
Many of the practitioners spoke about the difficulty of trying to continue all of the
services a young person might have received, including therapies, medical assessment and short breaks.

⭐ Parent Blaming & PDA ⭐

THREAD:

Unless you have an #autistic child with #PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) - it's very hard to fully understand the difficulties & complexities of day to day life - both for the parents/caregivers & the child
Please don't rush to judge - parent blaming is such a toxic yet common & sometimes automatic occurrence
It takes a little more effort, but pls take the time to listen, understand & remove your assumptions - when you come across a seemingly 'bad' parent.
There will always be a reason why a parent may appear to be 'too soft' towards the child;
Why they're not 'disciplining' their 'naughty' child.
Not every child responds well to 'traditional' parenting & due to the #PDA child's extremely high #anxiety, other approaches are needed

#SEND ‘easements’ legal challenge update: @polly_sweeney & @SteveBroach instructed by Amber, a young person supported by her mother @1985Deanne , to send a Letter before Claim today to the Secretary of State for Education challenging the decision to implement the 'easements' 1/7
On behalf of Amber, we are challenging the Secretary of State's decision to make a Notice which significantly weakens the important duty under s42 Children and Families Act 2014 to secure #SEND provision in accordance with an EHC Plan 2/7
We also challenge the Secretary of State's decision to issue amendment regulations which remove the timescales for complying with a number of important stages of the EHC assessment, planning and review process 3/7
