I was hoping to do one of those feel-good new job announcement tweets: “I’m pleased to announce that I was offered a @GlobalFung Fellowship at @Princeton University”.
Alas, instead, I’m unpleased to announce that I was forced to reject said fellowship due to #sexdiscrimination.
Women in academia face all sorts of subtle & less subtle forms of sexism. And yet, I didn’t expect in 2023 to be discriminated against simply for having the kind of body that can become pregnant. Thank you @Princeton for reminding me what old school sex discrimination looks like.
After I accepted the @GlobalFung fellowship at @PrincetonPIIRS, I learned that I was pregnant. Upon notifying the program, I asked them to confirm – what I thought to be a formality – that they would be able to accommodate a pregnant fellow. This is when the stonewalling began.

Dear NSFT,

We appreciate your apology but you have failed to understand why "people" is not inclusive nor acceptable when talking about maternity services.

We guess you know this is an issue because you have BANNED replies to your tweet & FAIL to talk about mothers & mums. >> Image
Do you think deleting the word "birthing" is enough?

Failing to talk about mums, mothers and maternal services excludes women who may have English as a second language or with special needs, and distresses some mums. It is dangerous.

You are doubling down - and not listening. Image
You have a duty to all 9 protected characteristics.

By following #Stonewall advice to erase the words, woman, mums and maternity from your patient outreach, you are failing women in 3 protected characteristics, sex, race and disability.

Many will look at a #transgender woman’s face and height (which doesn’t change with feminising hormones) and think ‘it’s unfair’. That is an assumption. A stereotype and not based on any science. Let’s go through what the science does show... 👩‍🔬
Note that being #trans is not a choice, and whilst complex, gender is influenced in part by innate factors such as genes 🧬. Only ~0.5% of people in the population are trans, and only 1/3 of those are #transwomen.
A #transwoman who has had puberty blockers as a teenager and never been through male puberty, has the physiology of a woman. 🙋What about trans women who transition later after puberty❓
