I spoke with a former academic colleague today who had texted me a few days back for some advice but I forgot to call her back.

We didn't always see eye to eye when we worked together, but we always respected one other.
2/
She was reaching out because her son had recently invited her in and told her of his attraction to other men.

He also told her that he had just had his first sexual experience, and the condom had broke.

He's only 20 years old.
3/
He spoke with her 24 hours after it happened, and she was reaching out to me for advice, as her son wanted to get #HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (#PEP).

But he didn't know where or how to get it.

Despite being a family medicine doc, neither did she.

Brook Advisory Centres provided relatable sex-education information to young people, but their popular material sometimes resulted in criticism from politicians and the media. [THREAD]
#SexEd #HealthEd #SexualHealth
Information on contraception and sexuality for young people has always been a contentious topic in the UK. Even today, sex education and relationships at school are hotly debated, and new guidance remains desperately limited. Photograph of archive material from the 1980s against a blac
The first UK institution to tackle this lack of information for young people was Brook Advisory Service in 1964. Their aims were to “educate young persons in matters of sex and contraception and develop among them a sense of responsibility in regard to sexual behaviours”.

A man came into our clinic to start #PrEP.

Almost 50 years old. Well educated. HIV negative.

In a romantic and sexual partnership with another man, also HIV negative.
No other sexual partners.
Doesn't smoke, drink, or use drugs.

Reports using condoms 100% of the time.
2/
Tops most of the time with anal sex.
Sometimes bottoms.
But mostly enjoys oral sex and foreplay.

We discussed PrEP. Its effectiveness. Possible side effects. Pros and cons. Insurance coverage.

Many would ask "Why give this man PrEP? He's not 'high risk'."
3/
The answer is simple.

PrEP is a #sexualhealth program. It's not simply for those whom medical providers deem to be "high risk."

He gets to choose the combination of #HIV prevention methods that are best for his sexual health.

If he feels he needs it, I trust him.

Ladies, let me reassure you--unless you are purposely wiping back to front, your hygiene isn't the problem.

A 🧵 on recurrent UTIs.
1/ Is it really a UTI? The best way to know if you have a UTI is to get a urine CULTURE. This is NOT the same thing as when your pee is dipped in the office or the ER! A culture actually tells you what kind of bacteria it is, and what antibiotics will kill it.
2/There are a lot of reasons for it to burn when you pee that are NOT a UTI. STDs, soaps (baby wipes count) sometimes yeast infections or BV, bladder inflammation, urethral cysts, and if you're breastfeeding or menopausal, dryness from not having estrogen around.

Keep this on your radar, folks. Especially watch the language used to describe what's happening. @businessInsider #ForcedSterilizations businessinsider.com/ice-doctor-per…
Usually, "unwanted" is a dated term to describe an untimed, or unexpected, pregnancy. #SRHR #SexualHealth
Usually, it covers a lot of agency on the part of the person who became pregnant. In other words, someone who is able to become pregnant had a consensual sexual encounter, and that encounter resulted in an unexpected — or "unwanted" — pregnancy.

Today is the start of #SHW2020! Each day this week, I'll be tweeting about Britain's long, tempestuous and ever-so-slightly bonkers love–hate relationship with its #sexualhealth.

Darlings, brace yourselves. 💋 #SHW20 Image
We begin with the Victorians, who, contrary to popular belief, were obsessed with sex. In the C19, the only known #STIs were syphilis and gonorrhoea. Diagnosis depended on observable symptoms (no blood tests/smears). Effective treatments were non-existent. Image: @ExploreWellcome Image
In 1864 the British government introduced the Contagious Diseases Acts, intended to protect the armed forces through 'regulation' of 'common prostitutes'. The Acts gave police almost-unlimited discretionary powers to arrest any woman they thought might be soliciting. Image: HCPP Image

We passionately advocate for #SexualHealth and contraception for women and men to make informed choices.

So, before you select a birth control method, read this:

#AvonsPracticalTips #SexualHealthAwarenessMonth #HealthyLiving Image
1. What birth control options are available?

a. Barrier methods: condoms, diaphragm, etc.
b. Hormonal methods: birth control pills, implants, etc.
c. Intrauterine devices (IUDs)
d. Sterilization: tubal ligation, vasectomy.
e. Natural family planning.
#AvonsPracticalTips
1f. It's also important to be aware of emergency contraception—such as the morning-after pill (Plan B)—which can be used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex.

1/3 #COVID19 key concerns in 🇨🇦: Today, in lieu of a daily in-person update to the media, I have issued a Wednesday statement on sexual health during COVID-19, an important part of our overall health and wellbeing. Read in full here: canada.ca/en/public-heal…
2/3 #Sexualhealth is an important part of overall health. But, sex can be complicated during #COVID19, especially for those without an intimate partner in their household or whose sexual partner is at higher risk for severe outcomes.
3/3 The lowest risk sexual activity during #COVID19 involves yourself alone. If you decide to have sex with someone outside of your circle of contacts, take steps to reduce your risks.

Oooh, lookie ... another goofy study!! :) The title of this one? "Attractiveness of women with rectovaginal endometriosis: a case-control study."
theguardian.com/society/2020/a…
"The study's conclusion was: 'Women with rectovaginal #endometriosis were judged to be more attractive than those in the two control groups.'" — @gabriellecj for The @guardian. #SexualHealth
The fact that this study — and the study at the center of #MedBikini — were both published in peer-reviewed journals says a lot about academia. The space has a dearth of women and BIPOC in it, and it shows. (I've already shared my views about that here: twannahines.com)

What is HPV?

HPV stands for Human Papilloma Virus, it is one of the most common sexually transmitted infection, (STI) that affects both females and males.
There are different types of HPV. Some type causes GENITAL WARTS, others cause CERVICAL CANCER. @NaijaObgyn @ojayfemi
Note that HPV is a different virus from HIV, the one that causes AIDS, and HSV which causes genital herpes.
Although, what they have in common is that they can all be sexually transmitted.

We're not done talking about consent!

Yesterday, we explored what it means. Today, we'll focus on what consent IS NOT because a lot of people keep looking for loopholes to excuse bad intentions.

Here we go (Please RT)...
#AvonsPraticalTips #SayNoToRapists #SexualHealth Image
1. You do not have consent from another person if:

a.) The person is sleeping or unconscious
b.) You use threats or intimidation to coerce someone into having sexual relations.

Eagerly and enthusiastically awaiting the conversation with President @BarackObama. ♥️
For those who don't eat, sleep, and breathe #SexualHealth and #SexEd, this is what we're aiming for. We don't want "they didn't say no". We're want "they gave eager and enthusiastic consent." That's where the bar should be.
YES!!!! 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 Starting with spoken word!!! Artists will save us. #ArtIsPolitical

Good to hear Jon Meacham on

@MSNBC @Newsweek Pssst! I'm all about that #SexualHealth life. I'm also 100% low-key cognizant that nationality, immigration, racial justice, economic security, etc. all feed into that.
Started my career at State Department, moved into international education / affairs when I was in Chicago, then transitioned directly into media when I lived in NYC.

Here ya go. You're welcome. "You won't find the type of porn on Netflix that you'd see on Pornhub or Brazzers. But there are plenty of real sex scenes and nudity to enjoy."
FWIW, if Gapar Noe's erotica film Love (ft. actual, real sex scenes) isn't porn, I don't know what is. netflix.com/title/80057969
I obv don't object to depictions of sex — whether simulated or unsimulated — on film. In fact, I enjoy it. That said, there's a difference between depicting "sex" & shooting "scenes of abuse" on film. In my opinion, much of Noe's stuff falls into the latter category.

Had a dream that our building opened the pool for pool season. There were crowds of people everywhere & healthcare workers were on the scene taking everyone's temperatures and checking everyone's eyes.
In DC, pool season typically runs Memorial Day to Labour Day. I can't imagine pools will re-open this month. Do we even have research about the coronavirus' abilities to survive in water, yet?
Given it's regularly 100 °F / 38 ° C in DC during the summer, the thought of facing that without a pool is depressing.
