In 1526, the Mongol/Uzbek king of Kabul, Zahiruddin Babur, invaded India and after defeating the Lodhis, established Mughal rule in India.
In 1527, the temple was demolished by a Mughal General, Mir Baqi, and a masjid was built. It was given the name, Bahri masjid, in honor of the new conqueror of India.
