Thread 1/9 Comes as no surprise that leadership of Scottish Police Federation produce research for their own ‘quasi’ magazine to demand GUNS-Thankfully their out of touch leadership, who haven’t been beat cops for years, will never get to make that decision #ShekuBayoh
2/9 -Headline is inaccurate- 40% of police officers were not victims of assault last year- that statistic applies to 40% of 1698 officers their Federation surveyed, not 17,283 officers deployed by @policescotland making it just 3% not 40% of officers
3/9 The headline is disingenuous, more than half of Scots Cops do not want guns, it is the officers the Federation surveyed which means it’s actually only 899 officers making it just 5% of 17,283 police officers in Scotland 🙈

1/8 thread 👇🏽How convenient- head of Scottish Police Federation on #GeorgeFloyd but next week he’s in court to stop misconduct action after making a joke of #ShekuBayoh death in police custody. SPF are accused by Sheku’s family of smearing a dead man & trying to silence them

#GeorgeFloydVerdict is not the end. No1 should be above the law, yet since 1969 not 1 police officer in the UK has been convicted of killing a person in custody, this verdict should be the beginning -Never forget #ShekuBayoh & so many more💔 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧🇺🇸
The UK is not innocent, there have been 1,741 deaths in police custody or otherwise following contact with the police since 1990. No police officer has ever been convicted in connection to those deaths. #GeorgeFloyd
#GeorgeFloyd was not just about racial injustice in the 🇺🇸 a black person in the UK is twice as likely to die in police custody than any other ethnicity. So what now?

5 1/2 years ago #ShekuBayoh died in police custody after being restrained by multiple officers, batoned, sprayed&cuffed, in his death he was stereotyped & criminalised, but his family fought back for him,2moro the Public Inquiry formally begins & then adjourns 4several months 1/7
To allow preparation, that the Public Inquiry came about at all is the direct result of the tenacious determination & campaigning of Sheku’s partner Collette & his family. They suffered considerable anguish, anger&frustration about the lack of accountability after Sheku’s death.2/7
In the UK there has never been a successful manslaughter prosecution of any officer either at an individual or senior management level for police-related deaths, despite evidence of unlawful or excessive use of force or gross neglect.3/7

This article is sheer fantasy- once again anonymous ‘sources’ speculating on a Public Inquiry that the family have fought 5 years for into the death in police custody of #ShekuBayoh but the usual suspects are frightened of ‘race’ being investigated Image
Had they bothered to print the full response from the Scottish Government they would have known the story was ‘garbage’, but don’t let that stand in the way of a sensational fantasy- as for race👇🏽 bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotla…
FACT #BlackLivesMatter don’t have a key role as advisers to Lord Bracadale but Bayoh family aware that usual suspects have fought for ‘race’ not to be investigated as they believe there is no such thing as institutional racism in Scotland, meanwhile 👇🏽bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotla…

A thread, for all those all those who turned out today to stand against Racism & Fascism- Thank you what a beautiful response, Thank you for making true the slogan #PeopleMakeGlasgow #BlackLivesMatter Image
In recent days there were those who tried to say there is a moral equivalence between far-right racist thugs & peaceful anti-racists- that was abhorrent & grotesque pandering to racism- We have a proud tradition of no platform 4fascism in Glasgow & 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Image
The message to @policescotland was simple if you don’t do your job, then as a community we cannot allow fascism to take a foothold in our city- in a civilised democracy they can never be allowed neutrality on racism or Fascism Image

#BlackLivesMatter Then what about #ShekuBayoh🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 these struggles do not last a few days, can last years & sometimes a life time - in Sheku’s case his family have fought a legal system for 5 years- join virtual protest @ScottishTUC - support their campaign crowdjustice.com/case/justicefo… Image
Not many see the darkest hours, the depression, the break-downs, the tears that are dried up but the need to fight because the dead cannot cry out for justice & their loved ones feel the duty to do so for them crowdjustice.com/case/justicefo… Image
The desire to show solidarity on Sunday is understandable, the Bayohs want to go Tomoro but they are not because #BlackLivesMatter & #COVID19 presents too high a risk, even more so to BAME - if even one person was to lose their life is it worth it? crowdjustice.com/case/justicefo… Image

For over 5 years the Bayoh family have fought for justice following #ShekuBayoh death in police custody, they want a #BlackLivesMatter protest more than most- but even though Sunday is 5th anniversary of Sheku’s funeral they don’t want you to risk lives #COVID19 thread 👇🏽 Image
My name is Kadi, I am also a staff nurse “In as much as my family would like to be part of the demonstrations taking place on Sunday for #BlackLivesMatter, I believe that danger of the spread of Coronavirus is still too great... Image
As a staff nurse I know the deadly impact of the virus and I would worry about social distancing on the day and the lives of my family and other lives being put at risk. Image

The statement of Kadi (sister of Sheku Bayoh & a staff nurse) & myself in this thread as @NicolaSturgeon joins calls for #BlackLivesMatter physical demo not to take place but for alternative forms of protest whilst lives are still at risk #COVID19
“We totally understand the need to be on the streets and have been desperate to send solidarity in our thousands from Scotland to those fighting racial injustice in the USA, but also to highlight Justice for #ShekuBayoh here in Scotland...
But ultimately it is the slogan #BlackLivesMatter which has convinced us to say no. We believe at a time when so many are dying from COVID19, and the BAME community are disproportionately represented, it would not be right to protest in large numbers on the streets....

The family of #ShekuBayoh agree with much of that said by @HumzaYousaf about Public Inquiry, but also important to state Bayohs believe they were betrayed by an ‘racist’ criminal justice system & @policescotland - it took 5 years to reach that decision- why? #BlackLivesMatter
The Public Inquiry has not started, the family will know once it starts if it is truly independent & robust, guided by a panel/assessors that have the confidence of the family and BAME communities google.co.uk/amp/s/www.dail…
It took 5 yrs of a flawed investigation to reach decision of no prosecution, it will now take 3 years for the PI to report & no one will ever face a prosecution- no police officer in Scotland has ever been successfully prosecuted for a death in custody dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-…

A very personal thread on racism, & #GeorgeFloyd 🇺🇸 ‘I’m tired of grieving at the gravesides of those who lost their lives to racial violence, tired of families in the midst of the grief forced to set up campaigns for justice..’ 1/12 Image
2/12- I’m angry that 28 years after my teeth were knocked out by Glasgow police with the words “this is what happens to black boys with big mouths” that neither then nor since has any police officer in Scotland ever faced justice for racism- don’t tell me it doesn’t happen - Image
3/12- I’m tired of being angry,I’m tired of the bad memories, I’m tired of never being too scared to say anything when racism effects me personally, tired of reading statements of solidarity from the “great & the good” whilst there’s silence on #ShekuBayoh Image

You can never stay neutral over injustice, if you really want to fight racism in the USA & fight for justice, then why not start with where you live? Remember the name of #ShekuBayoh who died in police custody on 3rd May 2015 in Kirkcaldy, Scotland ImageImage
What excuses were made & why are black men here never deemed worthy victims? Criminalised & stereotyped in the aftermath of their death-Sheku a knife wielding black man who attacked officers who had to defend themselves after being attacked first? LIES irr.org.uk/news/spinning-…
The dead cannot cry out for justice but it is the duty of the living to do so for them, for over 5 years the Bayoh’s fought for truth & justice only to be told not a single charge would be faced by any of the 9 detaining police officers google.co.uk/amp/s/www.dail…

Will the public inquiry into the death of Sheku Bayoh bring justice? There may be some problems. Thread.

On the morning of 3 May 2015, on a street in Kirkcaldy, Sheku Bayoh lost consciousness while being "restrained" by police. He was pronounced dead in Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy at 9.04am
sacc.org.uk/news/2015/deat…
Police had been responding to calls from members of the public about a man brandishing a knife. But when police arrived when the Police arrived Sheku was carrying no knife, never threatened them with a knife, nor was one ever found on him

All those horrified at 🇺🇸scene of a black man #GeorgeFloyd dying as he struggled to breathe whilst being knelt on by police officer, should also remember #ShekuBayoh who said “I can’t breathe” whilst being held down by officers, until he died in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, 3May 2015 ImageBBC FOOTAGE https://www.goo...
After 5 years of struggle his family were told that not one of the police officers would face justice, not a single charge- We now prepare for a public inquiry into Sheku’s death in police custody google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.…
What makes Sheku’s family angry is not just state racism but our blindness to what takes place on our own doorstep, families are left to fight on their own, as their loved ones are criminalised & stereotyped in their death, thus justifying their death google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.…

It is difficult to believe that it is 5 years exactly since #ShekuBayoh died after being restrained by up to multiple police officers on a Sunday morning in Kirkcaldy after they responded to reports of a black man carrying a knife- long thread follows on behalf of Sheku’s family
When I met the family & Sheku’s partner Collette within 24 hours I warned them of the long haul they faced, but I never expected that it could take up to 5 years and now possibly 7 to get the truth never mind justice. google.co.uk/amp/s/www.dail…
The family lost all faith in the ability, of PIRC to deliver a robust impartial investigation a very long time ago and then felt nothing but total betrayal by the Lord Advocate’s decision not to prosecute any of the nine officers or @policescotland
