I'm feeling frustrated that taking a bikeride in the late afternoon in SF Westside leaves me more stressed. And sad that we're talking about taking away rather than adding #SlowStreets.
We have @JFKPromenade and @GreatWalkway -- for now -- but that still requires me to bike through the gauntlet of angry cars in OMI, Sunset, and Forest Hill to get there.
I go out of my way to pick the least trafficked streets possible -- 8th instead of 7th, Holloway instead of east Ocean, western Ocean & Vicente instead of Sloat -- but that didn't prevent me from being punish-passed on 6th Ave for trying to bike outside of the door zone.

What if we made a network of #SlowStreets, serving every neighborhood and welcoming all San Franciscans?
What if we invested in real #SlowStreets infrastructure that slowed traffic, beautified neighborhoods and maintained emergency response time?

Today’s SF #slowstreets walk: Shotwell cut over to Sanchez to 30th and back. A highlight
Sound on
In this transect of the Mission and Noe Valley—very different neighborhoods— I’d say 85% of people in each were wearing masks.

When you do a lengthy thread replete w/ stories on how/where gang issues fit into the safe/open/slow streets discussion and someone immediately tells you there's no need to read it because the real problem is cars, did you really happen
For those that didn't see the #carsplaining in response to a question raised in the thread. It was real and it was not spectacular. ImageImageImage
I've been writing for a transportation outlet for the past 8.5 years. I promise you I've heard about cars before. But all those years in this field have taught me that it doesn't know much about the other barriers to accessing the public space (& which also push people to drive).

Proud of @OakDOT today. I personally struggled with what our approach should be, but Oakland's Slow Streets program hits the exact right notes: don't #bancars but do #slowstreets by discouraging thru traffic on residential streets. oaklandca.gov/projects/oakla…
@OakDOT With this approach, we can be also realistic about limited staff resources during #COVID19 by lifting up existing adopted plans and by "installing" with some dropped off cones & A-frames.
A lot of folks were interested in full shutdowns, much like our beloved Oaklavia events. But that takes *days* staff time pre- and during, disrupts bus lines, and requires traffic safety enforcement. It also creates a destination!
