You are probably aware by now that ASHA has proposed to remove “culture, language, and dialect” from the anti-discrimination clauses of the Code of Ethics for the profession. Their explanation is that “these concepts are already covered under…the term ‘national origin.’”
They cite the US Dept of Labor and the Dept of Justice as justification, as statements from these divisions explicitly describe discrimination based on national origin as including discrimination based on language, accent, and culture.
Some colleagues, particularly those in SIG 14, have pointed out that this is problematic for a # of reasons, a major 1 being that it excludes the languages/dialects of US-born linguistic communities & centers whiteness + monolingualism as normative for who’s considered “American”

For example, De Lopez, @Renagalway, et al. asked parents how they made sense of their children's speech and language disorders and how they described them across 10 countries

Let's start with the problem. The problem is that high-quality, evidence-based programs do not always end up in routine practice like schools. For example, a review showed that it takes on average 17 years for only 14% of research to be integrated into practice.
17 YEARS AND ONLY 14%! This means that programs that we know work are not used in routine practice and do not benefit those who need them. This means that our children with #DevLangDis and #Dyslexia for example do not receive high-quality services.

Working Memory is used to hold in mind and mentally manipulate information for short periods of time, for a specific purpose. For children with SLI (or DLD #devlangdis), verbal working memory can be vulnerable.

THREAD. Ok, this must be said. To everyone who is down on Joe Biden for sounding, slow, old, confused last night -- let's put things in perspective. Biden has been managing his fluency disorder (also called stuttering) his whole life. #WeSpeechies #SLPeeps #StutteringAwareness
Stuttering is exacerbated by stress, and Trump knows this. He was trying to fluster Biden, to make him stutter so that he sounds "dumb." Despite the circumstances, Biden did a REMARKABLE job managing the stress and using the exact strategies we as SLPs often teach.
Many of these strategies, to the naive person, may make him sound slow or confused. For example: 1) Speak slowly, and especially ease into the first word -- to the naive person this can make you sound slow, but in fact it's strategic.

Reading for Understanding teams focused on improving reading comprehension in many grades. All instruction included a mix of oral language stimulation and more traditional reading strategy work, linked to text. ies.ed.gov/pdf/RFU_Nov201… 2/20
RCT shows that teaching language skills impacts reading comp. Texts were uses in instruction. “…this study provides causally interpretable support for the language bases of reading comprehension.”
