1/15 The link between Inequality and Gun Violence:

🧵 There's a complex web of factors that contribute to gun violence, but two elements that demand our attention are high inequality and permissive gun laws. Let's take a deep dive into how these factors intersect. Image
2/15 It's important to start with understanding the correlation between inequality and violence.

When socio-economic disparities widen, frustrations increase. This can result in heightened tensions and often leads to more violence. #IncomeInequality #Violence Image
3/15 Studies show that societies with larger income gaps tend to have higher rates of violence.

This is particularly true for the US, where inequality has grown considerably over the past few decades. #IncomeInequality Image

Government released its draft National strategy for the Care and Support sector today. I haven’t read it in full detail, but credit where it’s due - really promising to see the focus on some key issues impacting the sector. Here are my early thoughts. #auspol #ausecon
A driver of this work is the persistent issues impacting supply of labour. Challenges at the intersection of the labour market and care economy are well known. Consumers see it through cancelled appts, thinner rosters on Aged Care sites and difficulty confirming services
Longterm scarring of the care workforce due to pay, recognition and nature of work is impacting the ability of providers to access labour resources. This is no longer an issue in regional and remote areas, but one across geographies and cohorts.

Both neighborhood and family #socioeconomic status (SES) influence children’s gray matter structure & function, but what about #whitematter (WM)? What could be some mediating mechanisms? We studied these questions in 8842 children from the #ABCD Study: medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
RSI assessed microstructure in 31 WM tracts. We looked at RND, which measured *directional* intracellular water & could reflect organized #myelin, and RNI, which measured *isotropic* intercellular water & could reflect #glia/neuron cell bodies. (fig adapted Burnor et al 2021) Image
Higher neighborhood disadvantage and lower parental education had independent links to lower RND (organized myelin) in forceps maj, corticospinal tract, and sup long fasciculus. These agree with previous findings of lower DTI-FA and lower WM integrity in low SES. Image

We all ♥️ #Paris where were it took place 1st presentation of incoming French Presidency to @EESC_PRESS! #PFUE2022 @CBeaune underlined this rare & precious opportunity, highlighting France's ambition to mark progress on #EU legislation, #climate #digitalisation #socialpolicy 1/1
The red thread of #PFUE2022 would be "Recovery, Power, Belonging" (“Relance, puissance, appartenance”). France would not impose an agenda, but would serve as an accelerator for the way forward on ideas and dossiers. #EU #Europe 1/2
#Recovery”- in economic terms, after the Covid pandemic; "#Power" - in terms of #security, external relations, #defence, #migratory policy, climate; and "#Belonging" - feeling of being part of the common #European political project. 1/3

Dear #poverty scholars, it is time for a reckoning. It is long overdue. #Discrimination, #structuralinequality & the lived experiences of the poor is not a tangent, it is core to "mainstream" poverty scholarship.
@nyuwagner L. Mead’s @springerpub Society paper "Poverty & Culture" perpetuates inaccuracies, ideologies & power imbalances that distract productive discourse & policy innovation. This treatise insults poverty scholarship; no matter political leaning. (see more from @lennan77)
It needs to stop. Stop blaming the poor. Stop assuming that history & context do not matter. Stop unfounded explanations such as “culture.” Stop ignoring the developmental needs of children & the nurturing of families.

As poverty & social policy scholars, what can we do?

#Brexit ALREADY costs UK £1bn pw as we Hit Holidays! @GoldmanSachs put that lower at £600m. but I'm looking at 2+% less GDP (than would have been); more Govt Debt (+interest); the growing impact of #Brexodus on jobs/taxtake; £devaln.&inflation creep, reducing Property values.1/20
@GoldmanSachs Am puzzled & mortified? that UK's so-called Major Political Parties @Conservatives @UKLabour seem umbilically disconnected? from the financial IMPACT of their recent (let's say) 'accidental collusions' and Brexit-Birth-Giving! Why the co-incidental & costly numeracy lapse? 2/20
@GoldmanSachs @Conservatives @UKLabour Assuming that (eg) @bankofengland @hmtreasury @ICAEW @The_IoD @cbicarolyn @FrancesOGrady are aware of UK's #Brexit financial haemorrhage? eg Govt Debt, Jobs/Tax, Businesses (all sizes), Individuals - there may be varying estimates? but agreement that a HUGE hit is ongoing! 3/20
