I keep seeing hot takes on how covid affects kids + if it’s dangerous for them.

But amazingly there’s still a striking shortage of pediatrician voices given the opportunity to provide our nuanced and expert opinion.

What would we say if you asked us?

A thread 🧵
Pediatricians have a lot to say about the covid in kids, how to balance the risks and benefits of exposure, and how to make personal + public health decisions that prioritize the needs of children.

What would we say if asked how dangerous covid is for kids?
We’d ditch glib mortality statistics that dress up data as science + paint a more complicated picture.

We’d reassure you that children continue to mostly do well with acute covid. We’d then explain that deaths + hospitalization from acute covid are just part of the equation.

Lead 3.0: Group 7: Breaking Down the notion of "Otherness" to Combat #ImposterSyndrome and #Burnout

What a fantastic group of scholars!

The interrelatedness of #impostersyndrome, #burnout, and #otherness.

It affects many physicians. 30-40% among family medicine and IM residents. >50% of physicians have burnout.

Threat to diversity: Imposter feelings are strong predictors of burnout.

Socialization while #socialdistancing. A thread. I know this is hard. I’m going to share here how we celebrated my daughters 6th birthday to give some examples on how you can still celebrate the important moments that continue to happen as life goes on during this #pandemic.
First we asked my daughter to pick a few friends and we asked each to sign up for a 20 min slot. We asked that anyone who came wear a mask, and asked if anyone was having symptoms to pls decline the invite. We decorated our garage and put tape on the ground #6FtApartAndMasked
When ppl arrived they would first hand sanitize then write in a birthday book (we had mult pens). We had a backdrop for ppl to take pictures. Next stop the piñata where prior to touching the stick u would hand sanitize, then take 3 whacks. Next was socially distanced #hopscotch.

I've heard some claim that #doctors are greedy, heartless, willing to sacrifice patient health and safety for profit, referring to vaccines, triage of care, the expense of healthcare, and the list goes on.

I hope this clears all that up for you. #PPE
abcnews.go.com/US/video/docto…
This goes also for #nurses, PA's, #firstresponders, #firefighters, #police, #military, and all those who risk their own safety to help others. You don't go into one of our fields to get rich. You do it because you care about others.

#SoMeDocs #medtwitter #HealthcareHeroes
Yes, there are bad actors, but that's true in all professions. The majority of #HealthCareWorkers risk their own health & safety daily, as do #FirstResponders, not just during #COVIDー19. Don't blame the providers when you're really mad at the system.

#In2019ILearned THREAD

You don’t have to be 💯 ready for a new challenge or role.

In fact, if you’ve already mastered everything you need for that opportunity, you’d be ready to move on the the NEXT one after that.

Stop holding yourself back.

#WomenInMedicine
#In2019ILearned to stop taking other people’s behavior and words personally.

Instead, I try to default to compassion. Generally, people are wonderful and we’re all doing our best. People who try to hurt others are usually hurting inside themselves.

#medtwitter
#In2019ILearned to be more brave and open about my nontraditional career moves.

I was afraid of being misunderstood and judged. Now, I know that many other docs also want a different kind of career, and my choices are nothing to be ashamed of, 🙏 to #medtwitter support.

Burnout. It’s usually not due to some big thing.

Instead, lots of little things fill the plate till it overflows.

EOY - time for an audit/edit:

➡️What to keep doing

🛑What to stop doing

▶️What to start doing

#medtwitter #WomenInMedicine
Do you already do this?
Yesterday, I started my lists for my Start/Stop/Continue audit.

Like many on #medtwitter, I have lots of lists.

I consider personal, work, community, family, etc

AND break each of those down again and again until I’m really looking closely 🔍
For ex, big items on my “work” list:

👩‍⚕️ clinical
👩‍🏫 academic
👩🏼‍💼 industry
🎤 speaking
💻 virtual courses/Rx Series
📊 consulting/BOD
📚 royalties
🏖 TransforMD

What to start/stop/continue? Have to break each down further...

#WomenInMedicine who can relate?

#MedTwitter has been discussing “Take Two Aspirin + Call Me By My Pronouns,” an op-ed claiming social justice is taking time from sci ed + decreasing the quality of #MedEd.

So here’s my take:
“Take Two Aspirin + Read a Curriculum”
THREAD.

#MedTwitter #SoMeDocs #DoubleDocs
As always, I start threads with my POV: #LatinasInMedicine #DoubleDocs student in year 2 of #medschool. I have interests in both #MedEd + #HealthJustice. I am about to finish my term as diversity rep on our med student govt. I care a lot about advocacy.
Let’s take a moment to learn about the author: Stanley Goldfarb is a nephrologist, *former* assoc dean of curriculum at UPenn Med. He graduated from med school in 1969. Ffolks who studied at UPenn have brought up negative experiences with Dr. Goldfarb.

A few considerations about getting paid to speak for #medtwitter, #womeninmedicine, and #SoMeDocs in response to recent thread from @arghavan_salles.

1/
Sometimes speaking and earning those lines on your CV are actually part of your job. In that case, you should have a clear understanding about protected time from your clinical/academic responsibilities.

2/
Also, depending on your institution and possibly your topic, you might be limited in your ability to accept external payment for speaking, or it might be owed to your department. Do your homework!

#TrueValuesChallenge Day 2 [thread]
Values guide our decisions, behaviors, and internal harmony.

Most sound great. It's easy to consider one and say 'yes, I value that'.

But values don't have equivalent importance. They are ranked, often subconsciously.
Will you take the #TrueValuesChallenge?

I'll offer you 2-3 very awesome values.

You'll choose just ONE and boldly explain why that one matters most to you.

Tag your #medtwitter #hcsm colleagues!

Review the rules and Day 1 results here: bit.ly/2H2eiwl
Here it is! #TrueValuesChallenge Day 2:

Which of these matter MOST to you?

Reply with an example of how your chosen value shows up in your real life.

Do NOT wimp out and say 'curiosity helps me be decisive' or 'I am decisively curious'.

Be bold. And comment!

Alright, I have some thoughts on this op-ed, esp how tradition + legacy are often used as a distraction tactic from diversity/inclusion.

Buckle up for A THREAD.

#MedTwitter #SoMeDocs #DoubleDocs #DiverseDoubleDocs #MedStudentTwitter #WomenInMedicine #DiversityInMedicine
As always I start my thread by recognizing my own position in this conversation: I am a (proud) Latina woman training to be a physician-scientist. I hold a lot of privilege having attended an Ivy League institution for undergrad and currently training as a #DoubleDocs at another.
My own alma mater #PrincetonU has been recently grappling with its own (problematic) history by taking active steps to diversify iconography + naming around campus. I am proud to say that this is in part due to a meeting I co-hosted as co-president of PLA in combo with other orgs

On a serious note:
Tuesday is my father's 2nd yahrzeit
Sunday 4/21 was the 2y anniversary of his death.

In reflecting back, I have some thoughts for #medtwitter, #Jews and the general public...
1/

#death #dying #grief #PalliativeCare #medicine
1. Condolence notes just need to say, "I am thinking of you" or "I was sorry to hear your news" or "I am sorry for your loss."

Don't overthink it, and don't offer false platitudes. Send your note or make your call, and the person who is #mourning knows you care.
2/
2. Show up.
For #shiva, for #kaddish. The first week, there's a lot of people around in a #Jewish house of mourning. Then everyone goes home, and we are left alone.
Offer to go to lunch. Bring dinner. Take a walk.
Join us in shul. Kaddish that first time in services was hard.

My 8y son: what's this muscle called?

Me: the masseter. It's the major mastication muscle - for chewing.

Him: that's a stupid name. It should be called 'The Big Chewing Chomper'

RT if you agree, #MedTwitter

He wants to know if we're going to change it officially🙂
He also proposed we change the sternocleidomastoid to 🎶 'the head bone's connected to the chest bone'🎶

I tried to explain that basically, that IS how it's named 🙂

Show the kid some love,
