In 2017 I took part in a BBC1 Docu called āMy Family Partition & Meā. I was the first member of my family in 70yrs to go back to Bangladesh (then West Bengal) to the place where my father fled in terror from genocide & retrace my familyās footsteps 2/
Violence surrounded 'Partition' in 1947, the division of the Indian subcontinent by the British, changing millions of lives forever. A 5 minute clip to my Dadās story here. As you can see if you watch this, it was a pretty emotional journey for me! 3/

In @browngirllikeme @behindthenetra writes about epigenetics and the trauma carried on through generations due to Partition. I was familiar with this and had already started to explore 'entanglements' but I know I've only scratched the surface.
I'm fortunate to have parents, uncles and aunts in their 80s and 90s who have started in recent years to share their stories. I've been writing them down. This second-hand trauma, carried by on through family lines, is not discussed enough. Family of their generation are stoic.

THREAD: In the UK we are currently celebrating #SouthAsianHeritageMonth so I thought Iād highlight some of the historic & cultural ties between Uzbekistan & South Asia. There are lots for me to choose from! /1
The Graeco-Bactrian Kingdom covered much of Central & South Asia. Their coins, statuary & urban planning are found in archeological sites across the region, demonstrating the movement of people, ideas, & goods. #SouthAsianHeritageMonth 2/
Buddhism travelled to Central Asia from India & thrived in Uzbekistan from the 1st c BC. Some linguists think the name Bukhara comes from the Sanskrit Vihara (Buddhist monastery). Termez was a major Buddhist centre, with monasteries, temples, & stupas. #SouthAsianHeritageMonth 3/

2/n Naoroji's legacy is his intellectual contributions to the Indian National Congress which he helped create. His "Drain of Wealth" theory - where he meticulously detailed how much money Britain was looting from India - helped dispel myths of the Empire being for India's "good"
3/n What was particularly genius about his work was that every bit of statistical data he used was collected by the British imperial state - which put paid to imperialist objections to an Indian speaking against Empire at the heart of the metropole

South Asians, particularly in the diaspora, have an ethical and moral responsibility to speak about the genocidal situations for Hindus and other minorities in Pakistan. Itās not enough to say #SouthAsiansForBlackLives and then ignore a genocidal tragedy in your backyard.
We highly recommend that those that want to educate themselves about the brewing genocidal situation in Pakistan tune into this expert panel with renowned scholars who will dissect & discuss the injustices against Hindus and other minorities. #southasians #SouthAsianHeritageMonth
