A little something to cleanse your feed for today. As many know, the City of #Southlake, TX has been at the center of a massive culture storm over the last several years. They’re not alone in this area of NE Tarrant County, but for this thread let’s stay here in Southlake 1/9
My daughter, Lauren, a Jr. Journalism major at @UNTsocial, called yesterday & wanted to grab lunch. As any Dad who’s 20 yr old girl calls to have a lunch date would, I jumped at the opportunity 😍 It was a cold day & we were diggin’ some Pho, so Pho BAE in #Southlake it was 2/9
It was so great to catch up with my baby girl and hear about her upcoming projects, and all going on in her world. I’m so proud of her. The food was great and, while it was cold outside, my heart was warm. As we neared the end of our meal, our waiter came over to check on us 3/9

#FBF 🧵: Found my old "Letter to the Editor" submission which was published (heavily edited) in the now defunct Southlake Times. Dated September 8, 2009. #flashbackfriday @Carrollisd #Southlake
@Carrollisd I wrote this piece after learning @Carrollisd would not allow teachers to show @BarackObama's address to students during class. Parents had to remove them from school if they wanted their children to watch it.
@Carrollisd @BarackObama "This decision is less about time constraints and more about the collective closed-mindedness of a community. It is about the fear of exposing children to different ideals than they have heard at home-- that they might actually form opinions according to their own free will."

My prepared remarks for the #Southlake @Carrollisd school board meeting tonight: (a thread)
@Carrollisd I won’t waste my brief time sharing all of the painful memories I experienced as a young person of color in this school district.
@Carrollisd You have made it abundantly clear that your interests are not in protecting marginalized students and families here (as evidenced by this in-person board meeting during a global pandemic disproportionately harming communities of color).

Hey #Southlake, school is officially just one week away! Before #Dragons get ready to stuff their backpacks and go back to campus, here are a few things to know ahead of the new school year.

A thread. 👇
First of all, the district deliberated for a long time on what school would even look like in the fall. After @TarrantCountyTX ordered schools to be online-only until Sept. 28, the district thought they would be teaching remotely again at first.

That was before @KenPaxtonTX stepped in saying local health authorities could not close schools solely because of COVID-19. @LizzySpangler first reporting.

Hey #Southlake, there's a lot of conversations going on right now regarding @Carrollisd, the cultural competence action plan drafted by the District Diversity Council, and what it may mean for the district going forward.

A thread. 👇
First of all, you need to understand that the district has been developing the cultural competence plan for a long time. In December 2019, the #DDC launched the Dragon Cultural Survey to collect community feedback on diversity perceptions in CISD.

The district collected over 3,500 responses and presented the findings to the board in February. The results say 61% of students felt their differences were generally respected, while 29% say they've felt unwelcome or uncomfortable because of their looks.
