When Nigel had spoken those words, Adam had reason to doubt just how much he had meant them. He was used to people not meaning what they said, more than used to people zoning out shortly after he started
telling them about the gravitational field strength of Mercury compared to Neptune & the atomic composition of the Horsehead Nebula.

But Nigel? Nigel seemed genuinely interested. He asked questions, clarified points & generally made Adam feel like the only person on the planet
that mattered at that moment.

Time ticked on. The evening cafe crowd came and went, rowdy groups on canal boats tailed off, and a clocktower somewhere chimed just once.

It was a warm Spring day in Amsterdam.

Adam was in the first week of his trip to Europe. That in itself was something he had to keep reminding himself. Him! Adam! Travelling, going on holiday, after all those years of not leaving the city he grew up in.
But it had been almost like moving to California flipped a switch inside him. The world was his oyster, and he was hungry.

The plan was to spend a day or two in Amsterdam before moving on. Check out the science museum, Space Expo, maybe one of the more
'adult'-themed exhibitions if he worked up the courage.

But all of his plans had flown out of the window the night he met Nigel.
