On Monday, for the first time, we performed a set of manoeuvres to avoid a high-risk collision w. #SpaceDebris created in the #Cosmos1408 anti-satellite test last year.

This was a difficult #CollisionAvoidance manoeuvre.👏👏to our #Sentinel1A Control Team & Space Debris Office
#CollisionAvoidance monitoring is unfortunately routine work at #MissionControl, and our teams are well-practiced in reacting to high-risk events.

This near head-on #collision was however unique; the situation evolved rapidly, was tricky to avoid, AND we had <24 hrs warning

Important and informative update from @SpaceX in response to widespread concerns about #SpaceSafety & #SpaceSustainability associated with #Starlink. Lots to unpack but worth investing time to do so (it's the Feb 22nd update entry btw) spacex.com/updates/
There's a strong focus on the collision avoidance capabilities of the #Starlink satellites rather than on the services that inform those capabilities. Ryan Hiles and co-authors presented a hugely valuable insight on this aspect at @amoscon last year amostech.com/TechnicalPaper…
The impact of #Starlink on the work of @SpaceForceDoD is explained clearly, as are the steps taken to manage the screening burden that has emerged with growing numbers of #Starlink satellites. That burden is continuing to grow (exponentially by my estimates)

While we can expect #spaceweather to get more exciting in the next few years, with peak sunspot activity expected in 2025, the panel came to the consensus that this next cycle will be very similar to the previous – both generally weaker than the average solar cycle.

It's time for my (seemingly monthly) look at conjunctions involving #Starlink satellites, as predicted by celestrak.com/SOCRATES/. In this month's update I have corrected an error in the conjunction rates for June, July & August (I missed some conjunctions) (1/n) #SpaceSafety
In the SOCRATES report from 30 September 2020, with just over 680 #Starlink satellites in orbit (v0.9 & v1.0), there were 6957 conjunctions < 5 km involving at least one #Starlink satellite (17.7% of all conjunctions in the SOCRATES report) for the 7 days ahead) (2/n)
The number of conjunctions < 5 km involving a #Starlink satellite & something else (i.e. not Starlink) over the 7-day period was 2828 (7.2% of all conjunctions in the SOCRATES report) (3/n)

#Hera wird zusammen mit der @NASA-Raumsonde Double Asteroid Redirect Test (#DART) die erste Sonde sein, die ein Rendezvous mit einem binären Asteroiden-System vollzieht - einer wenig erforschten Klasse, die etwa 15% aller bekannten Asteroiden ausmacht.
Die #DART-Raumsonde wird zunächst einen Aufprall auf den kleineren der beiden Körper durchführen. #Hera wird im Anschluss an den Aufprall eine detaillierte Untersuchung durchführen, um aus diesem Experiment eine wiederholbare Technik zur Ablenkung von Asteroiden zu machen.

@esa This morning, @ESA's #Aeolus Earth observation satellite fired its thrusters, moving it off a collision course with a @SpaceX satellite in their #Starlink constellation
@esa @SpaceX @ESA_EO Experts in our #SpaceDebris team calculated the risk of collision between these two active satellites, determining the safest option for #Aeolus would be to increase its altitude and pass over the @SpaceX satellite
