The modern conception of U.S. military special operations crystallized during the #VietnamWar, when elite special forces units conducted clandestine operations under the command of the MACV Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG).
MACV-SOG was created on 24 JAN 1964 as a joint task force dedicated to covert operations under the command of a U.S. Army Special Forces colonel; accession to the unit was strictly voluntary, and the Army 5th Special Forces Group provided the largest share of volunteers. #USArmy
Its elements conducted a wide range of sensitive missions, including strategic reconnaissance, personnel recovery, psychological operations, direct action, sabotage, and counterintelligence. As the war escalated SOG grew, and its activities expanded into other countries.

20 MARCH 2003 – OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM GROUND CAMPAIGN BEGINS - 20th ANNIVERSARY
The main thrust of the OIF ground assault burst forth from Kuwait, with the I MEF striking northwards while the U.S. Army’s V Corps swung northwest to towards the lower Euphrates Valley.

The 3rd ID led the charge, breaching an earthen berm on the border and blitzing about 90 miles northwards to seize the enemy airbase at Tallil by 22 MAR. 3rd ID elements secured critical Euphrates River crossings and reached As Samawah, 130 miles away from Kuwait.
By 23 MAR, the 101st ABD was conducting attack helicopter assaults which penetrated as far as Baghdad. Special Forces units attached to Task Force Viking and Task Force Dagger penetrated Iraq from the northeast and southwest during these early days of OIF. #Armyhistory #USArmy

The "Haus am Berg" with the address Geitau 21 was a holiday guesthouse with a view of the Alps. Geitau, a tourist spot between Schliersee and Bayrischzell. But the lonely house on the mountainside had another function. It served as a secret commando bunker for the #Stasi 2/12
The location was perfectly chosen. A few hundred metres away is a field airport. Ideal for rapid troop deployments. The Austrian border is a few kilometres away. Numerous winding paths cross the green border of both states 3/12
