1. One of our toughest & longest battles to save #wildlife started on #WorldEnvironmentDay of 2016, when our team mates Suvrajyoti Chatterjee & Meghna Banerjee came to know about the horrific "ritualistic hunting festivals" of South Bengal.
2. We witnessed thousands of slaughtered wild #animals strewn across the railway platforms of Howrah & East Medinipur districts.
We faced both physical as well as verbal abuse from the hunters before we could even grasp the true extent of devastation inflicted by them.
3. Further inquiries revealed it was an annual affair celebrated on the occasion of Faloharini Kali Puja where thousands of armed mobs descend on the #forests & rivers of these two districts & decimate every #wildanimal they can find.

The new @IPCC_CH report brings together the #ClimateCrisis and #BiodiversityCrisis. One paragraph alone makes stark reading with high to very high confidence in the science (summary🧵 below). The time for immediate action is NOW. #ipccreport #IPCCIsAboutMe #ClimateReport IPCC Climate Change 2022 Report
1) "#ClimateChange has caused substantial damages, and increasingly irreversible losses in terrestrial, freshwater and coastal and open marine ecosystems (high confidence)"
2) "The extent and magnitude of #climatechange impacts are larger than estimated in previous assessments (high confidence)"

प्रकृति: रक्षति रक्षिता ! Mangrove forest after a cyclone. The line of defense after a cyclone.
#Mangrove; not only home for various species but also a tool against #Disaster. Tropical country like India, with densely populated 7500 km long coastline, will be effected by cyclones more due to #ClimateChange. This salt tolerant species acts as a shield against cyclones. 2/n
So how it works. Reposting my old tweets. Mangroves create a maze & dense habitat. With species which are salt tolerant & special adaptations. They act like buffer & consume the winds & energy. So after passing the storms get dampen. 3/n

1. Suppose an alien spaceship will land on earth next week.

After many light-years of travel through space, some friendly little green creatures decide to get out and stretch their legs on our planet.

What would they report home?

Hidden in the fast, cold, and dark universe, they discovered a blue planet that brims with an incredible diversity of life, aided by ideal living conditions.

Since the dawn of civilization, humanity has lost 83% of all wild mammals and half of all plants.

Of all the mammals on earth, 96% are livestock and humans, while only 4% are wild mammals.

Today is #WorldMangrovesDay. So let me remind you. #Mangroves;

- acts as buffer & reduce impact of cyclones & #storm surge.
- they break the #wind force
- provide #habitat to #animals during cyclone or otherwise
- they reduce #pollution.

We just need to protect them.
So how it works. Mangroves create a maze & dense habitat. With species which are salt tolerant & special adaptations. They act like buffer & consume the winds & energy. So after passing the storms get dampen. You must have read in ‘Theory of Vibration’.
They are prop roots. In #mangrove #ecosystem they are adventitious support roots. They Grow down from lateral branches, in a way support trees, with doing other root functions. Additionally roots buffer against damage to coasts & enhance biodiversity & carbon sequestration.

In #TropicalForests, dung beetles💩 are fundamental for ecosystem functioning, as shown by our research. Want to know why? Check this 🧵. 1/11

🎥: @FilipeEco
The #DungBeetle name refers to the habit that some species of these beetles have in rolling feces from different animals. 2/11

🎥: @Erika_Berenguer
Dung beetles use #poop for feeding and nesting, with their larvae already hatching in a nutrient-rich environment. Some species roll using their front legs, such as this Oxysternon festivum rolling dung from a howler monkey in the Maracá Island, Roraima. 3/11

This is a tremendous step forward: bbc.co.uk/news/science-e…

If it's designed well, this target could power the policy & investment needed to turn round the decline of #nature at last.

Thank you to everyone who has joined the #StateofNature campaign! Keep going until it's in law.
It has been brilliant to see the #environment movement unite for this critical law for wildlife, combining @WCL_News members with great friends like @Team4Nature & @mentalhealth.

Thank you @DefraGovUK for listening to the 60+ charities and 160,000+ people backing #StateofNature.
Now we need to make sure that the details of the target are right: it must cover as many #species as possible, with measures for abundance & diversity of #wildlife. We'll need an action plan for delivery, clear reporting to Parliament and accountability.

"Framed as perhaps the last untapped, under-explored & under-exploited region in the world, the Pacific #Ocean is set to be a contested space for resources."

#WorldEconomicForum #SDGs
"The #BlueEconomy heralds a new race to carve up the Pacific, turning the Pacific Ocean, from surface to seafloor, into a crowded/contested space. Pacific state leaders are courted w/ economic gains that are a fraction of the value of the ocean resources that will be #extracted."

Amidst the horror of the late-2020 UK, I've got some #GoodNews to share! Alongside some #BadNews for #biodiversity and #conservation. So buckle up for some hot-off-the-press science from @UniversityLeeds @RSPBScience @oxmartinschool @naturesustainab

TLDR: we projected that ~88% of the 20,000 #species we looked at will lose habitat to farmland by 2050, and ~1300 will lose 25% (a QUARTER!) of their remaining habitat. This is #badnews and could hugely increase #extinction risks. 2/ nature.com/articles/s4189…
BUT with proactive #conservation actions we can eliminate losses! Increasing agricultural yields, shifting to healthier diets, reducing food waste, and global-scale land-use planning can, when combined, provide healthy diets for a growing population AND conserve biodiversity 2/

Once you represent a musical composition as a network, it is possible to examine the evolutionary dynamics of its harmonic content over time, as explained by @mbnUNT in his opening talk for this week's SFI #musicology working group.

Actually, this documentary has set my mind into commotion and took me back into those years when the New #Labour and #Blair came into power in the late 1990s in the #UK.
We eagerly watched what reforms under the #collectivists would imply, as the UK had a manifest #class system.
The worse thing which #Blair could do, at that time, was to remove the #hereditary #peers from the House of #Lords.
This particular political decision had far-reaching consequences for the #British Society,as a vernacular mindset that rejected #evolution & tradition jointly arose

Great news for #conservation: protection of freshwater #biodiversity can be increased by up to 600% through integrated freshwater-terrestrial planning. Our new @RAS_network study in @ScienceMagazine: science.sciencemag.org/content/370/65… 1/4

We found that conservation planning solely focused on terrestrial #species is likely to protect just ~20% of freshwater biodiversity in the Brazilian #Amazon. 2/4

Even where freshwater species data is missing, we can still increase freshwater conservation. By using only terrestrial species + accounting for #river connectivity, #freshwater protection result in conservation gains as high as 200%. 3/4

A thread to cover some of the major - and I mean seriously, shockingly major - gaps, mistakes and problems with the #environmental impact assessment for Montijo airport in #Portugal.

First up: no #fieldwork. AT ALL. 1/
That's right – the EIA of a major international #airport proposed for the country’s most important #wetland site for #bird #conservation didn’t bother to actually count any #birds.

Instead, they depended on studies already published for other reasons.

How did that work out? 2/
Well, the data on birds feeding in the #intertidal- the largest and most important #habitat in the #SPA- was collected in 2002-3.

In the 17 years since, the #Tagus has changed a lot for birds. Improved #water treatment but drastic increase in #shellfish harvesting. 3/
