"Liquid and Solid #Brains: Mapping the #Cognition Space"

Today's SFI Seminar by Ext Prof @ricard_sole, streaming now — follow this 🧵 for highlights:

"Why #brains? Brains are very costly...it seems like they are not a very good idea to bring complex cognition to a #biosphere that just needs simple replicators."

"I also want to explore the problem of #consciousness, which is around all the time..."

Two different views of #evolution:

- Stephen Jay Gould and an emphasis on #contingency

- Simon Conway Morris/Pere Albach and an emphasis on #constraints and #convergence

Thank you @IWS_Network for giving me the opportunity to share my #story 💜 ! This a part of Voices Without Frontiers program iwsnetwork.ca/voices-without… #IWS #WomenInSTEM #VoicesIWS #ecology #conservation #biodiversity
I was born in #saopaulo, #Brazil’s largest city, very different from the #Amazon Rainforest & Rio! See me and a #samauma, the most famous Amazon tree 🌳
Also me & @IsabelaHissa in front of Sao Paulo’s #MASP (Modern Art Museum) & me and my mom in #Rio! #VoiceIWS @IWS_Network Image
I can say I lived in a great #rainforest because Sao Paulo & most of the coast of Brazil are in the Atlantic Forest 🌴🌺🐍. It is one of the 34 world’s #hotspots of #biodiversity, with more than 1500 plant species and 90% of original area loss. #VoiceIWS @IWS_Network Source: https://www.e-educa...

3. There was not much of #Halloween celebration in colonial New England, where rigid Protestant beliefs prevented frivolously celebrating, especially of traditions with some doubtful pre-Christian fingerprints all over it.

Today's #DailySpider is the brown recluse, Loxosceles reclusa (family Sicariidae).

These secretive, six-eyed #spiders are almost certainly the most feared & misunderstood in North America. brown, six-eyed spider with violin-shaped dark mark on its head, sitting on a rock
Spiders in the genus #Loxosceles* are considered medically important because their venom can be harmful to humans (unlike that of the vast majority of other spiders).

*There are several species in North America. Pictured here: the Arizona recluse (L) & Big Bend recluse (R). brown spider with 6 black eyes and dark violin marking on head sitting on rockclose up of lighter brown spider with 6 dark eyes (in 3 pairs) and violin-shaped marking on head
Recluse spiders are not aggressive. They do not go around looking for people to bite. They feed on insects & other arthropods, not human blood. #DailySpider brown recluse spider with red-eyed fruit fly (Drosophila) in its jaws, sitting on a rock
