It’s a black day for #SriLanka not because of its past but because of its present.

We have a gov. led by an unempathetic, fascist ruler who is putting up a 200mn show to satisfy a wet dream, while medicines have run out, children are starving, and millions are suffering.
When people peacefully show dissent to the absurdity of this ‘celebration’, they are mercilessly teargassed and beaten by the police.

This is why the Janatha #Aragalaya must continue. ✊🏽

#GoHomeRanil #srilankaprotests #PoliceBrutalityLK

Earlier the police prevented two youths from peacefully protesting.

‘Where is freedom or independence’ the youths ask!

Twitter with all its sponsored trolls and fake accs, was messy.

But during #diganariots #EasterAttacks, covid and #SriLankaProtests, the platform’s role in realtime news dissemination was incomparable. We saw how often our media was informed by citizens.
#RIPTwitter #SriLanka
For example, Lankan journalists/citizens were able to report and provide visual content of instances of #PoliceBrutalityLK and crackdown by the Army, during the #Aragalaya

This is mostly true for the region as a whole. From #Myanmarcoup to #IranProtests2022
Not to mention so many other communities here ranging from tech to gaming to academic to corporates etc etc.

It’s unimaginable how a completely clueless manchild #spacekaren is able to fuck things up this badly for millions of people around the world, just because he has money.

Time for another #FactCheck, especially on how the protest has delayed IMF support.

According to Minister @nanayakkara77 the "chaotic situation in the country fuelled by revolutionaries" delayed a staff-level agreement b/w SL and the IMF. [1]

This is FALSE.
The delay in progressing on IMF negotiations is largely due to the delays in enacting tax laws to change the tax structure, presenting a plan to achieve debt sustainability, and adopting an interim budget.
Whilst the IMF has not officially issued any statements about the protests delaying a bailout, it has called on Sri Lanka to pro-actively engage with China on debt-restructuring.

#SriLankaProtests illustrate results when bigoted policy intersects economic incompetence.

Bodu Bala Sena appropriated non-violent Buddhism to fuel majoritarianism in #SriLanka. Various Hindutva elements appropriate syncretic Hinduism to drive supremacist nationalism in India... Image
The Rajapaksa clan patronized the BBS.

#GotabayaRajapaksa inaugurated their "Buddhist Leadership Academy" in 2013, saying it's of "timely importance” & "they are engaged in a nationally important task & should not be feared or doubted by anyone"...

The monks who lead the BBS have been accused of hate speech, instigating riots, leading vigilante attacks.

Sounds familiar?...

There's a lot of political deal-making & grandstanding going on. @fernandoharin was always known as someone who 'plays to the gallery' with a touch of hooliganism & he's living up to his reputation. Whoever tries to convince us that GR is a changed man, is in it for something. /1
This is a President who refused to listen to anyone & with his Family & cabal, drove the country to bankruptcy. This is a President who misled people, stoked racism & made blunder after blunder due to his arrogance & looking after the interests of the Family & his cronies. /2
This is a President who wanted more power through 20A - apparently now he's ready to give up that powerful position!!! Even after being a miserable failure, this is a President, who still hangs on to the presidency, though people have been demanding for months that he resign. /3

There's been discussion over the symbolism in the Sri Lankan flag, so today, we're going to take some time discussing where it comes from and how this design came to be...

According to the Mahavamsa, the Sinhalese people descend from present-day Bengal. At this time, a supposed "lion-man" named Sinha had two children with a princess from Vanga, named Suppadevi. Their son, Sinhabahu would go on to found the city of Sinhapura and became king. Image
After Sinhabahu died, his son, Prince Vijaya came to the throne but was seen as an unfit ruler. He was expelled from the Island with his 700 followers. He is said to have carried a flag with a lion depicted on it, referencing the "lion city", Sinhapura, where he came from. Image

There have been increasing cries for President Rajapaksa to step down, but this is not unique to today…

Take a look at how in 1953, the Ceylonese Hartal brought down PM Senanayake and his UNP government…

#srilanka #history #lka #EconomicCrisisLK #srilankaprotests #GoHomeGota ImageImage
In the 1952 elections, the UNP, led by Dudley Senanayake, won a majority in Parliament. However, in 1953, things went downhill as Sri Lanka slumped into economic crisis after the boom from the Korean war came to an end. Image
However, the government response was seen as detrimental to the situation as subsidies on rice were lifted and social welfare spending was cut. The prices of basic commodities rose and Finance Minister J. R. Jayewardene even telling people to just “Grow your own food.” Image

What will happen to Sri Lanka, economically, over the next few months, especially to its people?

The answer isn't pretty, but it's something to prepare for.

Let's assume there's some sort of political stability at some point. What that is doesn't really matter too much to this thread's outcomes, it just extends the timeline if it's delayed.

With that out of the way - what will SL need to come out of this?

(2/11)
As long as we keep engaging with the IMF and our creditors, it should hopefully bring enough confidence that there will be some inflows (bilateral, remittances, export conversions, aid) that allow the urgent essential shortages to ease across the next month or two.

Going to explain depreciation, how the official market failed and the unofficial market took it up, and what's needed for the two to come together.

#SriLankaEconomicCrisis #SriLankaCrisis #SriLankaProtests

(1/20)
Exchange rate is basically the value of a currency in terms of other currencies. Eg- 1 USD is worth XX LKR and vice versa.

Depreciation is when 1 currency loses value against another. Eg- 1 USD going from 200 LKR to 300LKR

Appreciation is opposite.

(2/20)
What determines this value?

Simplified, this is through a demand and supply mechanism. The more demand for a currency, the stronger (appreciation) it will get. The less demand for a currency/more supply, the weaker (depreciation) it will get.

A Sri Lankan friend tonight told me people outside the country asked her if she's safe, what with the protests and all. People are asking me also it's safe to travel to #SriLanka. Some even cancelled out of fear.
Here's my uncharacteristic message:
1. It's totally SAFE, peaceful. The protests are historic, unites the country. #SriLankaProtests in Galle Face in Colombo are inspiring to visit. Families are taking their kids.
If you don't like such things, fly into Colombo & drive/train to other parts. They're stunning.
2. #SriLankaEconomicCrisis needs dollars, so travel to this beautiful island, spend without guilt. There is fuel shortage so don't plan road trips. Take train, eat local. Trust me, it's better.

In April 1961, Tamil Students led a march in Jaffna to protest the Sinhala-Only Act...

Take a look at how it unfolded and what we can learn from it today...

In July 1960, Sri Lanka elected its first female PM, Sirimavo Bandaranaike with her party, the SLFP gaining power. They intended to continue the "Sinhalisation" started by her husband. Image
As a result, in 1961, the Federal party launched a satyagraha as the "Sinhala-Only Act" became enforced. The protest was most famous for 200 people who blocked the entrance to the Jaffna Kachcheri. Image

"The mood in Sri Lanka has changed. Everyone is fed up of the Rajapaksas. Even me, who voted for him," said Theshan Fernando, 26, a civil engineer & alumnus of the 136-year-old Ananda College, where many of the Rajapaksas went to school. #SriLankaProtests Image
In 2019, Mr Fernando campaigned and raised funds with the Ananda old boys' association to elect the President. But now, he is "ashamed of the President" for having failed to fix the country's worst economic crisis. #SriLankaCrisis Image

A weird thing happened near Liberty protest. It was peaceful until a bunch of guys walked out of nowhere and started pushing and shoving the police. They were aggressive. The same ones you see below👇🏽
They were calling other protesters to join in.
#ProtestLK #SriLankaProtests
Eventually, when they saw people weren’t joining in they stopped. And went to the corner and started speaking to this woman. One of the them was hurt. They were calling her ‘Madam’. I saw this Madam earlier as well.

Here she instructs them not to attack the police. Then she says ´වැඩේ හරිනේ. හරිනේ වැඩේ. එච්චරයි ඔනේ. අපි කරන්න ගිය/ආපු, වැඩේ හරිගියා'
A supporter says: 'අපේ රාඡකාරිය අපි කරනවනේ'
She leaves. Supporters cheer ´ඡය වේවා'.

Before chaos unfolded yesterday, I came across an after-school #protest by students, teachers and parents of Ananda Balika, Vidyalaya, Pitakotte.
The teachers and students, some soaked by rain, were chanting slogans in unison. This is the sort of political education we need.
Because our education is partially responsible for this country’s lack of political maturity. We are taught to follow. Dissent is always discouraged. If we are taught from a young age the political history of this country, voicing opinions, equity and class and accountability,
We might not elect crooks to rule over us. We might not go to sleep after each election, letting gov. function without the people’s oversight. We may just build a socio-political system that is accountable and a politically-conscious general public.

So I guess I completely lost it.

but it was infuriating to witness @GotabayaR and his hired goons trying to break up a peaceful protest using guns. There were children, youth, and elderly in the crowd! Why bring guns into their midst?Who are you trying to shoot?
#GoHomeRajapaksas
The whole country is on the streets protesting peacefully demanding this government to dissolve, the Rajapaksas to leave and for wrongdoers to be put in jail. And they still think this is a game.
With their toy solders, they play with the lives of 22 Mn people. This must stop!
This cannot go on. What more pressure can we put on the Rajapaksas as they ridicule the mandate of the people? The North and minorities experienced it, now it’s a rude awakening to the South. We’ve have been saying this for years. They have no regard for your lives. And that is why
