STAND WITH HONG KONG 🇭🇰

POLITICAL UPDATE

1/ As Hong Kong slides ever deeper into authoritarianism, with the media, courts and arts scene being censored and repressed, more young people make the difficult choice to flee the city…
2/ We must ensure their safety, to preserve and protect the spirit and people of Hong Kong

Exodus of young people from Hong Kong.

Under the crushing fear of the draconian security law, young people are reluctantly leaving Hong Kong in droves to find safety & freedom elsewhere.
3/ STAND WITH HONG KONG 🇭🇰

In particular, activists and anyone associated with the pro-democracy movement in the city simply do not feel safe anymore in their home city.

Myanmar's military is cracking down on citizens. I'm joining a global campaign to support Myanmar's democracy. Please take a photo with a three finger salute and hashtag #SolidarityWithMyanmar. Let's join in to protect our democracies.

Myanmar's military coup regime has zero legitimacy. The whole country has risen up against the military, but the military is using violence to command obedience. We cannot let the military win. Myanmar is at the vanguard of our fight for democracy. Let's support their citizens.
We have seen democracy regress in HK, Thailand, Malaysia, India. It's retreating in East Europe/South America. Authoritarianism has sunk its roots in Cambodia, Laos. Myanmar's military coup has zero legitimacy. Let's stand with Myanmar to resist the global threat to democracy.

Nothing to celebrate on bizarrely prompt release. Case will be mentioned Eastern Magistrates Court on 30 Sep 2:30pm, the day before China’s decision to approve the arrest of #12youths activists and its national day.

Facing max. The penalty of 5yrs in jail for unauthorized assembly and 1yr for wearing a mask, I'm not deterred whenever I think of fellow protestors who are struggling in detention in HK or in Mainland China.
Today’s arrest is a notorious abuse to the criminal justice system by placing charges ruled unconstitutional earlier. However, I choose not to surrender.

Seek, and ye shall find

The determination, bravery, blood and tears of every Hongkongers who #FightForFreedom are the strongest motivation for our 1 year long advocacy work.
Yesterday, one of our main call for actions has been met.

This is just the beginning of our story. 1/7
In June 2019, an exasperated LIHKG forum user called for help to revoke foreign citizenship of senior HK officials for trampling on #Hongkongers’ freedom. In less than a month, like-minded volunteers established this advocacy group *Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong.* 2/7
Hongkongers have endearingly adopted both our names, "Laam Chau" in Cantonese, as protest slogans. In our unity and resolve, we along with our fellow compatriots have come this far - Yesterday, the @USTreasury announced sanction regime on 11 top #HKSAR and Chinese officials. 3/7

2/ In case you don’t know, this line refers to President John F. Kennedy’s famous "Ich bin ein Berliner!" speech when he visited West Berlin in 1963, "Two thousand years ago the proudest boast was civis Romanus sum..........
3/ Today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is 'Ich bin ein Berliner'… All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and, therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words 'Ich bin ein Berliner!’”

Security Law will Diminish Freedoms Worldwide

(1) The controversial National Security Law has been passed. Hongkongers are now subject to draconian laws which strip them of their basic rights and freedoms like never before.

standwithhk.org/press-releases…
(2) Businesses that are based in or have any links with Hong Kong are battling the same laws that will inevitably suffocate their basic commercial operations. China’s reach even extends to diminishing the freedoms of academic institutions around the world.
(3) Truly to defend democracy and the freedoms from which we all benefit, the world must sanction and tangibly oppose China for its takeover of Hong Kong and the grave threat that it now poses to the democratic world.

As we watch the protesters in Hong Kong, [w]hat we ought to see are protesters that are fighting for democracy everywhere, including here in our own nation. [1]

READ: leiladelima.ph/de-lima-expres…
Because that is the nature of democracy. To fight for it where you stand, is to fight with it alongside everyone standing for it everywhere.

So I continue to stand with Hong Kong, as I have more than a year ago. [2]
Not just because their fierce and fearless protest leaders stood up for me when my freedom was taken, but, more importantly, because they are standing up for the Filipino nation when they stand up against the Chinese government’s violent bullying. #StandWithHK

Exactly 31 years ago at this moment, Chinese troops entered #Tiananmen Sq. after opening fire on peaceful protesters.

In memory of the 1989 victims, this is what Raymond Yeung, who lost an eye in a peaceful protest, has to say about the Chinese Communist Party (CCP):
In June 1989, hundreds of souls in Tiananmen Square were lost in the fight for democracy from the CCP.

When bullets started flying and tanks moved through the streets of Beijing, Hong Kong became the last beacon of hope for freedom in China.
For 30 years, tens of thousands of #Hongkongers have kept candles lit in 4th June vigils to remember the fallen.

This year, the vigil is banned in Hong Kong for the first time ever, after a year of our #FightForFreedom and China forcing the #NationalSecurityLaw on Hong Kong.

1/ From anti-extradition law to anti-national security law, more than thousands of #Hongkongers took to streets to protest against this highly controversial law since the new law will kill future democratic movements, and murder any slight chance to seeking justice in the city.
2/ It's fiercely imposed by Beijing upon the will of #HKers, without legislative scrutiny. Even tens of thousands of #HKers showed their outcry against draconian law, #hkpolice crushed dissents with armed vehicles, water cannons, teargas & pepper balls but #YouCantStopUs!
3/ The proposed national security agency is like the #secretpolice branch in HK. The biggest concern is arbitrary & political interpretation of the law, When using the law in China, lawyers, reporters, NGOs, religious groups were accused of “inciting subversion”.

[What the hell is going on in HK?]

1/ After almost a year of #HKprotests, a 22yo lifeguard #Sinkaho, the first person that pleaded guilty to riot charges, is sentenced to 4 yrs behind bars today, even though he just threw umbrella & helmet during #antiELAB on June 12 last year. Image
2/ On the contrary, the pro-#China supporter was praised for his noble sentiment & sentenced to shorter periods of imprisonment, after he stabbed innocent reporters & #HKers with cleaver & knife at #Lennonwall, leaving victims broken bones, collapsed lung & post-traumatic stress. Image
3/ This disproportionate sentencing shows that any protest against evil and abusive law is de facto classified as a more severe crime than actual killings in this city under #China’s growing control. Image

1/ It is crazy for #hkpolice to arrest the 81-yo veteran democrat #MartinLee, the Father of Democracy. He is the one who helped draft #HK’s basic law under #1country2systems. For almost 40 years, he has been promoting democracy and human rights in #HongKong. Image
2/ Jimmy Lai, most high-profile pro-democracy media tycoon, has been critical of #HKGov & #CCP leadership. He was invited by @VP Mike Pence & @SecPompeo to share #HK situation. As press freedom isn't allowed under authoritarian regime of #Xijinping, he becomes the prime target. Image
3/ As #HKPolice hacked phones of mine & @chowtingagnes & extract our personal information without our consent, arrest this time is more than just prosecutions! Police took adv of this opportunity to hack all phones & gather WhatsApp & Telegram conversations of key activists.

1/ It is my honor to share with @MarshaBlackburn the latest update in #HK on the call. #Beijing & #Hkgov prioritize crackdown of dissidence over health of #HKers. Director of #China’s office in #HK even called democracy movement as “political #coronavirus” & urged to suppress.
2/ HKGov use new #coronavirus restrictions to suppress protest. Police disproportionately target pro-democracy stores, being checked twice every 15 minutes. When police instruct to line up for body search, bystanders were framed as violating 4 person limit on public gatherings.
3/ Draconian laws strengthen authoritarian-inclined leaders’ grip on the city’s liberties. but it only makes more HKerds support democracy in HK. In our cause for democracy, we hope the world can continue to #standwithhk & confront Beijing crackdown.

#BREAKING | Court forbids My Europe Trip

1/ High court banned me from traveling to European Parliaments today, claiming a risk of absconding. By depriving of my right to freedom of movement, the court has imposed an extra punishment before I was proven guilty. Image
2/ I'm disappointed with the decision. Court thought parliamentary hearings & meetings ain't necessary to be present in person (VC/skype can do). Judge also commented that as HK's 'circumstances changed', advising me to stay in town, instead of putting efforts abroad to help HK. Image

Latest Poll: 51.5% say they have ZERO trust in HK Police. More than half for the first time. Over 70% say they don’t trust the police. We are now running a gigantic social experience of “violence without legitimacy in a global city”. #StandwithHK
After a month of vandalism and firebombs, figures on protest violence surprisingly did not change much (within margin of error). Possible explanation: ppl are so upset with police brutality that the increased protest violence is acceptable. #StandwithHK
Are people ok with vigilantism? Apparently yes. Ppl have no trust in the police now, so it is ok to resolve things themselves. But only to put ppl under control, though. #StandwithHK
