We’re hugely grateful to all of our wonderful speakers from last week’s #StatelessJourneys campaign launch. Thank you for supporting this work and for demonstrating your commitment to fix protection gaps for #stateless refugees in Europe.

Hear from each of them below. 🧵
The first panel brough together high-level representatives and officials from European institutions to discuss why Europe must act now to better protect stateless refugees.
.@GillianTriggs Assistant High Commissioner @Refugees highlighted the need to maintain strong focus on #statelessness and build new partnerships in the next phase of the fight to eradicate #statelessness. Thanks Gillian for the ongoing strong collaboration.

Here's a situation update from the ground on issues facing #stateless people trapped by the conflict in Ukraine.
statelessness.eu/updates/blog/a…

🧵[THREAD] Main concerns raised by our Ukrainian member @R2Protection [1/9]
Number of #stateless people prior to conflict was relatively high.
Low estimate puts it at 35,000, but likely much higher including those at risk of statelessness due to lack of documents: eg. 40-80,000 Roma, large % of children born in Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk. [2/9]
Most stateless people assisted by @R2protection have not been displaced so far. Only 24 (17%) of the 138 people R2P has been able to reach so far have fled in search of safer settlements. Only 6 of those have crossed the Ukrainian border and flee to EU countries. [3/9]

In the course of living my life, I am usually preoccupied with key life questions that guide my thinking, work and impact. This one is a #Thread listing the issues/ questions that I am considering. I share them in no particular order.
1. I am pondering what it would take for government to be truly controlled by the people and how governance can be less elitist. Most people in the world do not have a clue of how and why decisions that impact them are made by politicians (who often have very low expertise)
2. I am specifically wondering about information and data usage and how it can be better (and more) used by people - you and I - to specifically guide our personal actions, plans and how we demand for our rights.

As we witness the devastating effects of the #pandemic on the #stateless, we join 82 civil society actors in urging states, donors & other stakeholders to promote & protect the rights of the stateless in their #COVIDー19 responses.

As the #pandemic crisis takes its toll, the stateless are among those paying the highest of prices. Many face increased #racism and #xenophobia and are denied access to critical health services and information (in a language they understand) on prevention and treatment.
Many are also fearful of seeking assistance, as they are at-risk of being arrested, detained & subject to removal proceedings. Others are excluded from desperately needed emergency relief – as states require digital identity or documentation establishing proof of citizenship.

OK. Here we go. #ICJ Provisional Measures Order #TheGambia v #Myanmar #Rohingya #Genocideconvention Judge Sebutinde - not on the bench.
- Background of application - omitting procedural history etc.
Reference to #Rohingya group that self-identifies as Rohingya; prima facie jurisdiction need not be definitive as to merits of the case - art 36(1) ICJ Statute & Art 9 Genocide Convention - this needs to be satisfied first
Parties to GC - no reservation to art 9 by Myanmar but to art 6 & 8; no reservations of Gambia; “dispute” exists where hold “clearly opposite views” re performance/non-performance of obligations;one party maintains dispute, other denies it. Therefore compromissory clause comes in

It’s a packed courtroom at Milimani Law Courts as we wait for the #NIIMSCaseDecision We’re hopeful 🤞🏾for a decision that affirms constitutional protections and fundamental rights to #privacy and due process
What’s at stake in the #NIIMSCaseDecision? The right to privacy (including freedom from undue surveillance), due process and public participation in law making, and the rights of marginalized and #stateless communities that have historically not benefited from citizenship

1) This History Thread is about the Rohingya Diaspora beyond Bangladesh. Having fled severe persecution in Burma (Myanmar) to Bangladesh in 1970s-90s and more recent 21st Century genocidal attacks, Rohingyas have often risked a journey farther.
2) Rohingyas seek refuge in many countries, where security and legal status often remain elusive. This infographic map from Al Jazeera shows some refugee population estimates as of Oct. 2017.
3) In 1978 Pakistan offered legal residence to Rohingyas and thousands made their way there, followed by more refugees in 1991-93. Most ended up in slum areas around Karachi and found work in the fishing industry.
