Delighted to have contributed to this timely report on #SLAPPs in #Europe, which cites some of @FPCThinkTank's Unsafe for Scrutiny's research findings, incl. the #UK as a leading transnational source of legal threats against journalists uncovering financial crime & corruption ⤵️
This finding was drawn from @FPCThinkTank's global survey conducted in 2020 w/ 63 investigative journalists in 41 countries, who also reported that legal threats were most challenging to respond to (more so than physical or digital attack). @JFJfund @OCCRP fpc.org.uk/publications/u…
Also being launched today is the @CASECoalition’s report which covers >500 cases in 29 countries. This shows the scale of the problem of legal intimidation & #SLAPP, which has often been largely hidden to date.

Today, we had another chilling effect incident during a trial on a public interest affair. In particular, a reporter was asked to exit the room in the middle of the hearing (1) #slapp #stopslapps
under confusing justifications. The in force protocols for Courthouses define a maximum of 15 people per room and in certain cases of increased public interest such as corruption cases, the Judges have decided in advance to either accept a small number of reporters or no at all
but have published their decision in advance and have proposed alternatives to ensure protection of rights connected to reporting from this type of trials. Today, the only reporter (who has been following the case for a while now) was asked to exit the room
