THREAD: #Rwanda, is it the best choice?

As we have all had had time to mull over the extraordinary revelations from last week, we thought it might be now a good time to dissect through some of the issues
This thread will focus on Rwanda in relation to the #PritiPatel deal. 1/
Most of you will have heard of #Rwanda from "Hotel Rwanda" a film that tells a bit about the Genocide that happened in the country in 1994 - in 100 days between April-July - >800,000 Tutsi people were killed in a national Genocide.
Rwanda has been rebuilding itself ever since. 2/
Why is it important that we dissect this deal from the #Rwanda angle?

Well put simply - its because the British gov #BorisJohnson #PritiPatel are deliberately not telling you, if they did, most Britons would be appalled & disgusted at how bad the scheme is for RW & refugees. 3/

#NotACriminal #TogetherWithRefugees #STOPNABB

THREAD:
Who are the real criminals?

The #NationalityAndBordersBill is cruel, steeped in #racism and it criminalises...
[2/19]
Lets first consider the sentiment underpinning this, it is probably best expressed by Conservative MP Bill Wiggin while speaking at the Commons Liaison Committee on Wednesday 30th March, addressing the Prime minister as he outlines in his view the “right” sort of #refugees
[3/19]
In reply to Bill Wiggin’s question, the Prime Minister sighted the #NationalityAndBordersBill as being the solution.

Let’s take a brief look at this dreaded #NABB: When the Bill was devised, it was rushed through into official consideration containing placeholder clauses

🚨TODAY, MPs are voting on the Nationality & Borders Bill - also rightly known as the #AntiRefugeeBill - after peers made changes to it in the House of Lords.

👇🏽Here are some of the key changes MPs will consider and how we get them to scrap the #AntiRefugeeBill:
Lords voted ❌ to “offshore” camps for people seeking refuge here. This would mean deportation and indefinite detention in remote, hidden camps for almost all refugees.

⚠️ Today MPs could vote offshore asylum camps back in. #StopNABB
Lords voted ❌ to criminalising refugees for simply *arriving* in the UK. Every refugee who reaches us would, under this law, be subject to up to 4 years in prison.

⚠️ Today, MPs could vote criminalisation of refugees back in. #StopNABB

Here’s @LetsStopC9 outside H.o.L on why we have to oppose the racist

A RACIST PIECE OF LEGISLATION WHICH MUST BE OPPOSED!

‘It creates an arbitrary two-tier citizenship system that any civilised society should be ashamed of!

It demonises & criminalises Refugees and infringes their rights under the Refugee Convention.

Migration is a human right & no human is illegal.
3/8

It targets British people with Black and brown skin, British people from minority ethnic groups, and makes them vulnerable to losing their entire material lives.

But It doesn’t threaten white British citizens this way.

IF THIS ISN’T APARTHEID, THEN WHAT IS?

A slightly longer explainer 🧵, breaking all this down step-by-step, because predictably, @ukhomeoffice has flooded the field with mis- and disinformation, and it deserves unpacking:

The power to take citizenship away has existed in some form for a very long time. [1/n]
The version of the citizenship deprivation power currently in use goes back to the 1981 British Nationality Act. Section 40, clause 3 gives the Secretary of State the right take away citizenship from naturalised citizens. Take a look at the conditions in clause 3. [2/n] Screenshot of original Section 40 of the British Nationality
The power was construed in quite a limited way - really, it related to actual treason. And it could not be applied to naturalised citizens if it would make them stateless - see clause 5, and 5(b) in particular. [3/n]

Perhaps not hypocrisy per se, but there is definitely something strange about a Home Sec who wants to enhance powers to strip citizenship from naturalised and dual citizenship holding Britons, given her own background. Clause 9 of NABB will do that; [1/5]
but it's high time we consider the root power itself.

The current iteration of the power is contained in the British Nationality Act 1981. If you're a Windrush victim, that will be depressingly familiar - it is one of the key pieces of legal architecture, [2/5]
along with the Immigration Act 1971, which removed Windrush migrants and their descendants' automatic right (w/o registration) to citizenship in the Mother Country, to which they had come to take up employment post WW2. It laid the base for the hostile environment. [3/5]

🚨This Sunday, 1pm, Downing Street.🚨#NationalityAndBordersBill #STOPNABB

🧵In case you need convincing or reminding - here's why we need to block this bill: [1/15]
This is a great summary by @_BvdM on Clause 9. To reiterate, the power to strip citizenship in some cases already exists; it is the notice provision that is new. But it IS a lurch into (more) authoritarianism. And guess who it will target? newstatesman.com/politics/2021/… [2/15]
I have a more specific concern about the potential use of Clause 9 against ex-prisoners - a similarly worded clause in Borders Act 2007 is used to deport Black and brown ex-prisoners who hold ILR. (@followMFJ do excellent work to stop charters)

NEW @WritersofColour - The Nationality & Borders Bill: Imperial nostalgia, fascist resurgence and social control by @KGuilaine mediadiversified.org/2021/12/13/the…
I (Sam) wouldn't have taken the decision to start publishing @WritersofColour again if I had not seen this thread by @KGuilaine I knew that there wouldn't be a commissioning editor in the UK who would approach her and ask her to expand on this.
that would just simply be a waste. I've seen it time and again. Cosy, lazy editors getting the same privileged cosy legacy writers to submit any old tired column in. Well we have never done that @WritersofColour and aren't about to start.

Hi this is Samantha (founder of @WritersofColour) I founded it in 2013 by myself. Over years we added editors published lots of writers, held events, literary festival, published books, you can buy them here mediadiversified.gumroad.com I've realised I haven't told people of our plans
I've been doing activism since I was 20, I'm 42 now. So have a bit of experience in what I think it take to make a successful campaign. I'm going to tweet a list of things that we have been doing in the last 9 days & state empathically our goal is to get the WHOLE bill scrapped
First a quote I gave @AJEnglish on Friday 'Samantha Asumadu, a campaigner for representation in the media, told Al Jazeera: “I only knew about the bill on Friday through the New Statesman piece, that said that up to six million people were at risk of being deported.”
