Hey, @NYCMayor: 457 healthcare and public health professionals, including your former NYC Health Cmmrs @DrMaryTBassett @DrOBarbot, + orgs like @nynurses @DoctorsCouncil @NYDocs, have now signed onto a letter demanding you #StopTheTransfers to congregate shelters as Delta surges.
This urgent call from health professionals comes as FEMA announces they are extending the funding for non-congregate sheltering programs to Nov 30--which makes @NYCMayor @NYCDHS @NYCHealthCommr's decision to continue transfers even more mindboggling.

We’re here at Fordham Plaza with @nynurses @DoctorsCouncil @RitchieTorres @oni_blackstock and more health professionals, sounding the alarm about the dangerous transfers to congregate shelters as Delta surges. @homeless_hero kicks us off: @NYCMayor must #StopTheTransfers!
“Housing is health, and congregate settings are a Petri dish for COVID,” says @RitchieTorres, calling on @NYCMayor to #StopTheTransfers. Moving homeless NYers to congregate shelters right now is “a denial of public health.”
“As a physician, I understand the inextricable link between housing and health,” says @oni_blackstock. “In the last 2 weeks alone, we’ve seen a 140% increase in new COVID cases. Transferring people to congregate shelters in the middle of a pandemic is in effect a death sentence.”

Yesterday, @andylocal reported that 9 congregate shelter residents are being isolated due to COVID exposure. Thanks to @LegalAidNYC, further transfers are on pause thru today--but this is another piece of evidence that if @NYCMayor resumes transfers tmrw, lives are at risk. (1/x)
These COVID exposures are exactly what we’ve been warning @NYCMayor about for the past month. Deputy Mayor Dean Fuleihan heard it directly from homeless NYers and advocates. And yet, mind-bogglingly, the Mayor plans to restart transfers tomorrow. (2/x)
We came into #JulyHomelessRights month with 3 goals: stop the transfers, stop the sweeps, implement Intro 146. As of Friday, we’re on track to meet one of those--and as transfers and sweeps continue, we can’t let up. (3/x)

Mayor de Blasio is forcing homeless New Yorkers back to congregated shelters Monday. He says ppl need the services shelters provide & he is lying. There are no services. This is a shelter on Ward’s island. NYC pays $3500 - $4000 per person a month to sleep in a room with 30 ppl. A hallway in a facility wit...
The idea that shelters are a safe place for homeless people is a myth perpetuated by non profits that run & benefit from them. They can get away with this because only staff & residents can go in them. These photos are from a brave resident who is a member of @VOCALNewYork. A hallway of a homeless she...
Here’s a bed at a Ward’s Island shelter in a prison-style dormitory, 20-40 people per room, standard for many shelters. Mental breakdowns & open drug use are common, problematic for ppl trying to stay sober & unsafe for everyone. This is what de Blasio is forcing people back to. A small twin bed frame with...
