THREAD on our new paper on @IAAF Semenya Regulations

Pielke & @Madeleine_Pape 2019. Science, Sport, Sex, and the Case of Caster Semenya, Issues in Science & Technology, Fall. Free: issues.org/science-sport-…

Recommended for #STS, science for policy, sports gov

Ready? Let's go⬇️
@IAAF @Madeleine_Pape Meet Norma
She is perfect
Science says so
In 1940s measurements were taken of 15,000 women & Norma is the representation of their averages
All of nature's flaws (errors) drop out
What is left?
The perfect woman
Not what should be, but what is . . .
@IAAF @Madeleine_Pape Well
Not so fast
Norma's metrics come from only white, college-aged women
Norma was actually created by American eugenicists
She is the embodiment of racism
The decision of who to include in the measurement pool that defined Norma dictated the result, not science, not data ...

I am #resident of #JammuAndKashmir .
I myself, my family, my ancestors & other citizens of #JammuAndKashmir had to #Tolerate the #Article370 & #Article35A !

Since constitutional bench of Supreme Court will take up #Article370 tomorrow , here is #VideoThread on
#HorrorsOf370 !
Video 2
How could we TOLERATE strange provision like #Article370 for about 70 long years ?
How #bizarre was the decision to introduce provision like #Article370 in the Indian Constitution that compromised the SUPREMACY of #IndianParliament & #IndianConstitution !

A fantastic thread on specific examples of breeding applicable interdisciplinarity.

In fact, I think we can go further, and designers can help.
There's a trend here.

In a lot of different environments, designers are realizing there's useful and powerful theories, insights, and communities from disciplines they never considered; and there happens to be a reactionary clash from the communities who live in that space.
We have an opportunity here.

Sometimes that clash is valuable, because it offers space for people to acknowledge, voice, and catalyze a community to make their knowledge known.

But sometimes, we can connect without friction, and towards a collective goal.

🧬 In order to combat GMO pseudoscience we must be empathetic towards the people with a valid fear of what biotech science can bring. Folks like @GMWatch, @USRightToKnow, @biobeef, @foe_us, @beef, @yesmaam74 etc...
🍔 The @ImpossibleFoods GMO burger is tearing up the scene waking people up to the gustatory possibilities tech can bring to the plate. Dozens of companies with similar innovations have sprung up. Too many to list here.
🤝 There's an opportunity here giving human tastebuds less influence in the cognitive dissonance clash that otherwise pits humans against others.

The end of another semester of engaging students with @WikiEducation at @MissouriSandT @sandtcasb in #HistSCI means another tweet thread about this super fun project.
49 students, 32 articles, 40K words added, +285K views so far. I love their work! Take a look!
I'm going to group them. First group-- #WomenInSTEM #WomeninHistory
Students found that, uh oh, it's HARD to find reliable sources on women in science! This didn't stop them, though. They pushed through and learned some new research skills.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_S._… is 1 product.
Tycho's sister, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophia_Br… was another article that needed work. The women who worked on this one had to find all sources on Tycho then sift through for the 2-3 pages about Sophia. Thank goodness for good #librarians at S&T who were patient and helpful!

Generally debates our problems with the Internet concentrate on application layer issues, such as platforms and algorithms, while the Internet architecture is still perceived as engine of innovation. This is WRONG.
The Internet architecture is where the privatization and commercialization of the Internet has started.

Up to the early 90s commercial traffic was actually forbidden on the Internet.

Also innovation has been made very hard in the architecture, especially on core protocols.
Initially all computers connected to the Internet were equal.

Also this was undermined through Internet architecture (with the introduction of NAT directionality).

#USS followers: this is so interesting. Test 1 wasn't mentioned *at all* at #USS Institutions' Meeting. For all those of us interested in #STS – in understanding how concepts, methods, alliances & commitments grow strong, or become weak – the #USS dispute keeps on giving
And chuckle at Qu 12 of @USSemployers' latest Q&A: "What is going to happen to Test 1?" ussemployers.org.uk/sites/default/…

What, indeed? Will Bill Galvin ever #ResileAndResubmit?

UUK can't provide clear answer to their question, of course, while Bill chooses not to #ResileAndResubmit 2/ Screen shot of
Remember Bill Galvin's statement on Test 1 of 22 November: 3/3

How much, exactly, *do* the #USS team understand about their own valuation?

And now, @Sam_Marsh101 opens back up those Latourian 'blackboxes' and exposes the modelling problems. And the #USS wrath is great 1/
And what about the various pieces of software – e.g. ORTEC – that are central to the #USS modelling? How blackboxed are these? How was ORTEC selected by #USS? Who within #USS is able to open up the ORTEC blackbox? #justwondering google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j… 2/ screen shot from doc linked to in tweet about the ORTEC model
The ORTEC commissioning means stochastic risk modelling is now done 'in house'. But how well does #USS understand ORTEC innards?

Note they're keen to emphasise one of their risk function team 'pioneered stochastic risk models in finance' in early 90s. google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j… 3/ paragraph about stochastic risk modelling from doc linked to in tweet

One of the most interesting things about the #USS dispute is how it has involved shifting adjudications of who has – & crucially hasn't – expertise. @henryhtapper's henrytapper.com/2018/09/22/pen… is an interesting take on this 1/
.@henryhtapper: 'people who are anything but “pension experts”' 'have created the space for the debate to happen.' A primary aim of @USSbriefs & @OpenUPP2018 has been to provide one forum in which the voices of some of those participating in that debate might be amplified 2/
The #USS dispute has been the perfect crucible for many interested in science & technology studies (#STS) in how they/we collectively might *act* (as well as in how they/we might interpret) as landscapes of expertise & agency shift & open up 3/3

If university senior managers approach comms like this it's gonna be long while before they get trust back:

UCL Provost on #JEP "With the stock market performing more strongly...since the original valuation, the deficit is reduced" – blithely ignoring all substantive JEP points
When I first saw UUK's USS briefing slide, I thought they'd finally acknowledged need to improve modes of engagement, consultation, deliberation, communication.

But no, it's all about standardising their one-way messaging of 'facts' from UUK ▶️ universities ▶️ outwards
2/ Copy of https://twitter.com/USSbriefs/status/1041685053359702017
Epistemic & political challenges proliferate – but many actors insist ever more firmly that all that is needed is better one-way communication of (their) facts.

For those of us interested in #STS/public engagement w sci, the comms surrounding #USSstrike are quite something. 3/3

I need help from those in PR.

In my ongoing efforts to track the very recent history of UUK/EPF I'm wondering if 'myths & misunderstandings' is a standard PR trope used to reframe a debate, or a particular discursive tic of Alistair Jarvis #USSstrike universitiesuk.ac.uk/blog/Pages/Hav… 1/
In Jarvis's recent blog ('Have we "miseducated a generation" about student finance?') he argues that 'myths & misunderstandings' have allegedly led to students having – wait for it – *MISGUIDED* concerns about 'high costs & debt' 💰💰💰 universitiesuk.ac.uk/blog/Pages/Hav… #YesUniCan 2/ Screen shot from blog post linked to in tweet -- including phrase myths and misunderstandings
'Myths, Misunderstandings & Misconceptions" (EPF, Oct 14, doc author=Alistair Jarvis) argues: 'Many of the comments & claims that have been made against the case for necessary [USS] reform are based on misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the facts' warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/statis… 3/ screen shot of doc linked to in tweet

It's Friday. This is a thread about holidays, & mini-breaks.
And pensions & USS.
#ofcourse #ussstrike

And in particular about UUK's commitment to ensuring that phrase "contribution holiday" cannot be pinned on to them. So it's a thread about a discursive battle.
I'm indebted here to on-going work by @deepa_driver @ProfKurtMills @acupunctureUSS on contribution holidays (& contribution 'mini-breaks' [thanks @acupunctureUSS]).

I'm going to focus here just on the language used rather than the underpayments/holidays/reductions themselves.
As most of us know, asides from UUK's famous, multiple tweet responses of "happy to meet tomorrow" made on 5 March, UUK communicated very little via Twitter during #USSstrike with those on strike.

#EatingCrowe is a hashtag I affixed to the ongoing critical take on Jordan B. Peterson (JBP). It was done as a response to @VanceCrowe of @MonsantoCo bringing in JBP to talk at @FarmBureau's #AFBF18 conference and their efforts to coverup & gaslight critiHJ4t
Initially I dashed out a blog post to cite the issues with JBP as the #scicomm and #skeptic circles were blindsided by this infiltration.

Quick thoughts that have been bugging me about the role of Twitter in #USSstrike #NoDetriment (sorry this is a t****d) 1/
no question from me about the positive elements, in that the live digging into historical documents about the genesis of this dispute from employers' side has been incredibly enlightening (bravo @felicitycallard @etymologic etc)
however, I am concerned about one possible effect of this, that Twitter serves up a worldview to workers that they have all the facts on their side. This is reinforced by i) filter bubbles and ii) mainly public silence from tPR, USS, UUK.
