Nearly a century ago, when a prominent Calcutta college debarred its students from organizing Saraswati Puja, the beleaguered students found support from #SubhashChandraBose. It led to a clash between two of Bengal’s biggest icons. A thread (1/12)

A little-known nugget about Netaji #SubhashChandraBose. At a time when most politicians supported prohibition, he was among the few who opposed the idea. #Netaji #SubhasChandraBose #history
The Bombay Presidency Government under Balasaheb Kher (Congress) had decided to impose prohibition from 1 August 1939. Netaji, who had then had quit as the Congress president, stood by the Parsi community which was opposed to prohibition & criticised the govt for this decision.
However, #MahatmaGandhi was upset at this & issued a statement from Abbotabad (he was touring the NWFP). Earlier #MahatmaPhule had pointed to the adverse social effects of liquor. #LokmanyaTilak had joined forces with Muslims & Christian missionaries to clamp down on liquor vends

1/n #SadarPranam to Ishvara within you @quizzicalguy !

It was fun reading this hilarious thread by you centered on displaced views about #Netaji & how so called Indian Right looks at him.

This thread has point wise rebuttal. Do respond should you have enough substance.
2/n Firstly, you must know that even once Savarkar wrote lullabies in name of Hindu-Muslim unity, only to latter turn into whom you might call "Hindu Communalist."

Who knows had #Netaji seen the phase of #DirectActionDay, how would he have behaved?
3/n Dear @quizzicalguy , I don't know if you know it or not but once SR Goel whom too you might dismiss as Hindu Communalist stood being a Gandhian & Communist only to change opinion after he had to save his life during #DirectActionDay

From my father’s various postings across India we always returned to spend at least a part of his annual leave at my grandparents home in Delhi, which in those days, was walking distance from India Gate.
To go after dinner with the extended family to the India Gate lawns, enjoy an icecream & buy a gas balloon was a treat I remember well.

George V’s statue oversaw the entire area & could be seen from every direction.
It was something that angered both my grandfather & grand uncle no end.
We kids were encouraged to always sit with our backs to it.

Mind you, my grandfather was a soldier who had served in Burma & Ceylon during WW2.

This watch was said to have been removed from the body of #SubhashChandraBose. It was handed over to his family by Pt Nehru. There are 2 problems: Netaji never wore a square watch. The mark left by fastener on strap indicated it was worn by someone with wrist bulkier than Bose’s. Image
Netaji was known to wear a large, round gold watch. This one here (Omega Gold) was found among the belongings of the so-called Gumnami Baba. UP govt doesn’t want you to see these belongings. How cunning are these Gandhi bhakts! Image

In this interview to BBC in 1955, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar speaks on M.K Gandhi. He also talks about the role of SC Bose in the freedom struggle. He says that it was Neta Ji and not Gandhi Ji who was mainly responsible for India's Independence.

A thread on how savarkar led hindu mahasabha betrayed Netaji and promised british to lend their support against INA (Azad hind fauj) of #NetajiSubhasChandraBose.

The same savarkar who is adored by the RSS as hindutva icon.

it was Hindu Mahasabha under direct command of Savarkar which decided to enroll Hindus in a big way in this venture as he promised to be obedient servant of british in one of his mercy petitions.

While addressing 23rd session of Hindu Mahasabha at Bhagalpur in 1941, he called upon Hindus “to flood the [British] army, the navy and the aerial forces with millions of Hindu warriors with Hindu Sanghatanist hearts”

I never understood why many Indians support #subhashchandrabose's attempts to form an alliance with Hitler & Mussolini to fight the British in India. Do you think Hitler would have come in, ended British raj and waltzed out with a box of Laddus?

Seriously #Asking. Do explain.
Ok. But you didn't answer my question. There must be a conclusion to your thought process. I am just interested to know what it is.
POLL on #subhashchandrabosejayanti

#Subhaschandrabose tried to ally with Hitler and Mussolini to drive the British out of India.

Do you think if this alliance happened, Hitler would have freed India and then left us in peace?

Know where #Gandhi ‘s love for Islam & preaching #Ahimsa to Hindus came from!
"My family was Pranami, though we are Hindu by birth, in our temple priest used to read from Quran & Geeta”. Gandhi
Prannath Thakur, desciple of Devchandra Maharaj established #Pranami tradition.
17th century, Maharaja Chhatrasal with Shivaji’s blessings fought the Mughals for freedom of Bundelkhand. Before the battle Prannath blessed him to be victorious & gave him his sword & angocha.
#Chhatrasal fought 80 battles with #Aurangzeb & won almost all!
Prannath would invite the converted Muslims & Hindus to dine together & cite Quran & Srimad Bhagwat in his teachings( maye be to connect with the new converts & bring them back)?
After Mahamati Prannath, #Chhatrasal promoted Krishna Pranami tradition of Mahamati Prannath.
