A few years ago, during my MA research at Byculla women’s jail had seen that whenever the jail officials announced the release of inmates who were granted bail, a commotion ensued...
While the women being released would hurriedly gather their belongings, some would make a run towards them. They would pull at their hairclips, dupattas, asking for anything that the ‘free’ women could hand down.
An inmate explained that many women are abandoned by their families once jailed or do not have the financial condition to seek basic things including clothes.

The 15 are charged under 10 sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967 (UAPA), whose legal processes, as @abhinavsekhri10's July 2020 analysis showed, render a person’s guilt or innocence irrelevant. article-14.com/post/how-the-u…

I spent half the weekend ranting about that case to friends. Basically it was "A man is in jail for weeks for a joke he neither told nor was intending to tell and has been denied bail repeatedly by the judge, just because of his name. Kafka couldn't dream this up." On loop.
With an "of course, no one should be arrested for jokes but we crossed that line in India years ago."
The world call now stop citing Minority Report as the reference for arresting people for crimes before they happen. #MunawarFaruqui case is even more dystopian. He is ostensibly under arrest because the local police think he might tell "insulting" jokes and threaten public order

The superhit Friday release. #BARCGhotala
When #ArnabGoswami was first implicated in #TRPGhotala, India’s brain-dead TV gasbags were all triumphantly jumping around in glee, running the news for days. Has the appearance of the initials “AS”—and the names “Doval”, “Smriti” and “Javdekar”—taken the wind out of the blimps?

Bharadwaj’s counsel Ragini Ahuja had earlier told the Bombay HC that the activist had been in jail for over two years.

Ahuja had said Bharadwaj had comorbidities that put her at a higher risk of contracting the virus. #COVID19
NIA counsel, Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, argued against giving bail to Bharadwaj saying that if her condition required hospital care, the state would provide for it.
