We're issuing a precautionary seasonal recreational use health advisory for Lake Billy Chinook due to recurring cyanobacterial (harmful algal) blooms that routinely develop in the lake: bit.ly/2X6847W #SummerSafety #WaterSafety
Tests done at Lake Billy Chinook since 2015 show that blooms in the lake consistently produce cyanotoxins over our recreational use health guideline values for people and #pets. #SummerSafety #WaterSafety
As a result, OHA and local partners determined that a 2019 seasonal advisory for the lake is the best option. At this time, we're reminding the public of the steps to take to reduce exposure to the blooms and cyanotoxins that may be present throughout the season.

The good news: Preventing bites is relatively easy. Here are some tips:
1. Eliminate standing water around your home.
2. Wear #mosquito repellents that contain DEET, oil of lemon eucalyptus or Picardin.
3. Wear long-sleeved shirts & pants.
4. Make sure doors/windows fit tightly.

Because cyanobacteria are naturally occurring, blooms can form in any water body. Many are harmless, but under the right conditions—when weather, sunlight, water temperature, nutrients and water chemistry are ideal—they can produce cyanotoxins that make people & animals sick.
Since only a fraction of #Oregon’s fresh waters are sampled, we recommend staying out of the water if it looks foamy, scummy, thick like paint and pea-green, blue-green or brownish-red in color. When in doubt, just stay out. #SummerSafety
