How to engage with your vaccine hesitant friends and family. A few things I've learnt. (a thread)
Connection.
Compassion.
Commitment.
These are the things you'll need. Also one word you'll need: 'Protection'. 1/
You don't need much more. You don't need a lot of knowledge about Covid, or to be a doctor or scientist. You - a person that cares for and knows the person you are talking to - are enough.
2/
These conversations can use a lot of energy though, so only engage when you have the resources yourself to care, and you care enough for the person to work with them. It is fine to not have the energy sometimes. 3/

Today, I have had loads of people getting in touch to say “Oh now I get what you’ve been on about.”

The sight of crowds on the streets of #Soho or cramming into pubs on #SuperSaturday, has made people realise that the govt strategy is STILL #HerdImmunity (also called mitigation)
I've also been asked more questions:

"But why would they knowingly do it?"

"What's their goal?"

"What happens when we follow the money?"

"What can we do to stop this"

@Under_Covid - a new investigative & campaigning platform - has got some answers 👇
What is #HerdImmunity?

It is an outcome NOT a strategy

Virtually every virologist or epidemiologist will tell you this

To slow down the spread = mitigation = going for herd immunity

To stop the spread = suppression = not going for herd immunity

THE WEEK IN POLITICS
#7MemesFor7Days of political immaturity, incompetence and idiocy —or is this evil by design?

1. Sunday: fall-out from Mikey Gove's Ditchley Lecture. Using reaching for FDR's greatness as cover, he revealed he wants radical experimentation without oversight.
#7MemesFor7Days

2. Monday: a new, inane 3-word slogan (#BuildBuildBuild) to headline another lacklustre prime ministerial speech. A prelude to more broken promises, more taxpayers' £ down the drain & a dead cat to distract us from the merciless drive towards NO DEAL with the EU.
#7MemesFor7Days

3. Tuesday: Johnson fulfilled the promise he made on 26June2016 that despite Brexit, we Brits wld still be able to live, study, work, buy property, set up a business & retire in the EU.

NOT REALLY! Rat-b*stard Cons voted to strip us Brits of #FreedomOfMovement.

We know how many #COVID19 deaths Vallance claimed he believed would be a good outcome

I can now reveal how many deaths SAGE believed would represent the best & worst scenarios👇#BreakingNews
These newly released SAGE documents from 29 March, show that SAGE’S Reasonable Worst Case scenario had a maximum of 50,000 direct deaths between March & Sept.

Their best scenario was 6,000.

We’ve already exceeded their worst scenario...& it’s only July! assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl… ImageImageImage
This SAGE document released tonight was produced on 27 March

Vallance's "20,000 deaths is a good outcome" comments were on 17 March

On 16 March, @neil_ferguson had warned 250,000 deaths without any action

This is a time for sober, well-informed, transparent leadership & for MPs journalists & experts to challenge govt where they go wrong.

An Inquiry in 2021? What for?

We know what went wrong & why.

We know the govt ignored warnings.

We know this not sheer incompetence/bumbling.

Today is an unusual day in Parliament. For the first time since 1982 MPs will sit in the @HouseofCommons on a Saturday, dubbed #SuperSaturday.

They’ll be debating and voting on Prime Minister @BorisJohnson’s Brexit deal ahead of the 31st October deadline to leave the EU. Image
@HouseofCommons @BorisJohnson A Saturday sitting is extremely rare. 🗓️

The @HouseofCommons has only sat on four Saturdays since 1939 – for the outbreak of World War 2, to finalise business before summer recess in 1949, for the Suez Crisis in 1956 and when the Falkland Islands were invaded in 1982.
@HouseofCommons @BorisJohnson The @UKHouseofLords will also be sitting today, with members debating the UK's withdrawal from the EU.
