Saurashtra-Kutch - the biggest political division in the state both in terms of area and number of constituencies, swung dramatically in favour of INC in 2017 as compared to 2012. INC gained 14 seats in 2017 while the BJP lost 12 seats in the region.

Despite the swing, BJP gained around 1% vote share while the INC clocked a whopping 9% gain in vote share. It is noteworthy that this region is the least urbanised in the state and that BJP lost on 4 SC reserved seats from its 2012 tally which went to INC in 2017.

They live in 500 to 800-sq ft rooms, adjacent to the looms, each densely packed with 60-100 workers across two shifts. They sleep on worn mattresses infested with bed bugs. The blood of crushed bugs is visible on the grimy walls. There are termites & rats scurrying about too.
Each room has two toilets at one end that all the occupants use. The water for bathing, drinking and cooking comes from a common source. Supply is intermittent, and water is stored in a tank or plastic drum in most mess rooms, so the workers are unable to bathe every day.
1: Yesterday, as thousands of stranded migrants gathered at #Surat & #Mumbai, it was a bleak reminder that the needs of the most marginalized remain an afterthought in designing responses to the pandemic by those in power.
