It's a beautiful thursday! time for a #DBIOtweetorial commissioned by the awesome folks at #engageDBIO!
First up: “this feather star has too many arms and is too heavy to swim – instead it creeps along the seafloor”

How goes this amazing creature coordinate so many appendages? what kind of physics does it encounter?
When discussing limb coordination, it's probably easier to define what we mean by coordination than 'limb'...

Pre-print alert! ״Self-organization in natural #swarms of Photinus carolinus #synchronous #fireflies

How many fireflies does it take to synchronize a swarm in its natural habitat? And how fast does the burst propagate throughout the swarm?

🧵1/7 Fireflies at the Great Smoky Mountains
2/7 Fireflies flashing in unison is not just a mesmerizing manifestation of animal collective behavior… but also a landmark example of biological synchrony.

We recently developed a method to record the 3D spatiotemporal pattern of their flashes

3/7 To understand the synchronization mechanisms and inform theoretical models, we apply our method on the collective display of thousands of Photinus carolinus fireflies, this time, in their natural habitat!

Apple engineers discussed all of the new synchronization features they added today within CareKit (19 minutes - end of the video). I was fortunate enough to make some contributions to this effort on CareKits official GitHub Page (I'm " cbaker6" 🙃)

The CareKitSample-ParseCareKit which shows off all of the tools at once. It combines the data sync tool (ParseCareKit) that syncs the data from your device to parse-hipaa. The sample app will have you synching data to your server in 3 minutes!
