Juli:

"On 17 July, the number of new domestic cases dropped to single digits."

Is Taiwan's government over reliant on the export market to drive Taiwan's growth? Is there enough focus on SMEs that contribute less to the export market? This is an important question to ask on how Taiwan's government views Taiwan's role globally.

en.rti.org.tw/news/view/id/2…
What are the reasons why Taiwan's SMEs think they earn low profits? Is it because prices of Taiwanese products for local consumption are low? Taiwanese-made products can be half the price that of their international competitors (e.g. hair dryers, food products etc)
One reason for the low prices of Taiwan's local products could be due to the low wages. Workers earning low wages cannot afford higher prices, which therefore keep prices of local products low, and trapped in a cycle between low wages, low prices and low profits.

On this day last year, we first learned of #COVID19 & began our pandemic response.

Before we say goodbye to 2020, let's look back on a challenging year & give those who’ve worked so hard to keep us safe their due. These are the people that deserve our heartfelt gratitude:
Our frontline workers: #Taiwan’s medical workers, immigration personnel, quarantine taxi drivers, military & quarantine center workers have worked tirelessly, making great sacrifices for everyone’s health & safety.
Our national face mask team: They took us from a net importer of medical masks to the second largest producer in the world – from 1.8 million to 20 million masks per day! Their hard work allowed us to donate 50+ million masks to other countries, showing how #TaiwanCanHelp.

For EU scholars advocating for stronger #EU-#Taiwan ties, it’s key to grasp what our European trade offices (15: 🇦🇹 🇧🇪🇨🇿🇩🇰🇫🇮🇫🇷🇩🇪🇭🇺🇮🇹🇱🇺🇳🇱🇵🇱🇸🇰🇪🇸🇸🇪) do on the ground, and how much the EU 🇪🇺 & its member states can & want to do with/in TW. Long🧵 follows:
Met with Frederic Verheyden, #Belgium’s representative this morning. A compelling talk, in many regards, not least bc of our Bruxellois connection & good company @maxime_ramon Sharing a few reflections, starting w/trade & investment, essence of all EU offices’ presence in TW 1/9 ImageImageImage
#EU is the nr 1 investor in #Taiwan, but few people in TW actually know. Challenges will remain for the EU to leverage its raw economic power in a political context, as well as to leverage a joint image, given its fragmentation 2/9

1/ Started reading 'Hidden Hand' @HandCcp, which exposes the CCP's influence around the world.

Because this topics is so important to all of us and is something that @alliancecanhk is studying closely, I'll be maintaining this tweet thread throughout my reading
2/ I always wonder whether what I'm reading is made out of date due to events in our post-Covid world. This line from @HandCcp Chapter 2 certainly seems out of date:

"As a rule, the CCP tries not to antagonize too many people at one time"
3/ Also from Chapter 2, this line is more pertinent than ever, thanks to @joannachiu's excellent reporting:

"This principle [of winning over smaller, easily-convinced groups] helps explain the emphasis Beijing places on local councils"

1/ Over the past few months, #Taiwan has proved the success of #TaiwanModel, with science-driven policy-making, transparency and state collaboration with the whole civil society. Experts worldwide praised Taiwan for setting a great example and proving #TaiwanCanHelp. Image
2/ #Taiwan’s participation is critical, especially after #China’s medical advisor Zhong Nanshan has just warned of #secondwave of infections. Taiwan exclusion from WHA will only have deadly implications & risk #HealthForAll, by blocking Taiwan’s valuable experiences & expertise. Image
3/ In the face of this deadly plagues, we need to fight in collaboration and unity, instead of isolation and intimidation. On #WHA73’s meeting on Monday, I call upon the 194 member states to grant observer status to #Taiwan at the table. Image

At least 17 countries from 5 continents successfully managed their #COVID19 outbreaks @OurWorldInData
1 country on 1 continent did not, and became the world epicenter.
Why?
It defied the best practices of massive testing, contact tracing, and isolation
I am posting this now to preempt the per capita, per crapita responses, which have already started due to confirmation bias and unwillingness to accept the facts
I saw this ad today
WHO can help? Maybe not @WHO.
Taiwan's containment of #COVID19 has been exemplary
They sent the US 16 million masks

Adding to a small flurry of stories this week about how #Taiwan is doing a stellar job on fighting the #coronavirus I interviewed Stanford’s Prof Jason Wang about his paper on what Taiwan is getting right @TelGlobalHealth @TelegraphWorld 1/ telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/03/0…
The link to Prof Wang’s paper is below. He said that #Taiwan had been ready - after Sars in 2003 they had already been preparing for the next epidemic. “You want governments to do stuff before you know it’s happening” 2/ fsi.stanford.edu/news/how-taiwa…
“The establishment of the national health command centre was really critical,” said Prof Wang. This integrates central and local data, processes it and communicates key messages to the public about #Covid19 prevention 3/

Taiwan has developed an amazing face mask strategy during this #coronavirus outbreak. I remember Taiwan's government said it learnt from SARS that ensuring adequate masks is important to allay people's worries over the virus. But it's also important for several reasons: 1/13
(1) It bought time for the government. Ensuring available masks for all residents in Taiwan prevented panic and gave the government the time and space to manage the #coronavirus and save the resources which it would otherwise need to spend dealing with a panic situation. 2/13
(2) Ensuring available masks for all became part of an effective strategy to contain the #coronavirus in Taiwan, as the masks helped to prevent people infected from spreading to others and therefore helped keep the #COVID19 cases in Taiwan relatively low. 3/13
