È in Italia vivo.

#Libya #Refugees Check out this investigation into the UNHCR's operation in Libya & the reality for refugees subjected to unlawful detention.

With @lillomontalto for @euronews.

PART 1: bit.ly/2owJtJQ
PART 2: bit.ly/2ov0fJu

More to come tomorrow. Stay tuned!
@lillomontalto @euronews #Libya I spoke with a former @UNHCRLibya staff who painted an image of an agency overstretched & out of its depth, with asylum seekers left homeless, deprived of medical care & in legal limbo in an increasingly violent Libya.

@lillomontalto @euronews @UNHCRLibya #Libya In August 2019, Libyan authorities in Tripoli confirmed the shutdown of 3 detention centres in #Misrata #Khoms & #Tajoura, in reality the centres are still open. euronews.com/2019/10/03/unh…

#Libya Leaked letter by #GNA Interior Minister #Bashagha ordering the closure of 3 detention centres in #Misurata #AlKhums & #Tajoura.

This move follow remarks to @UN Security Council. "Forces on both sides have failed to observe their obligations under int. humanitarian law." Image
@UN #Libya Interesting that the "closure" is ONLY for those DCs where very few people are held.

1/In total, not more than 600 people are in #Misurata #Alkhums #Tajoura

2/Suq al Khamis DC in #Alkhums is not on the list & many #Eritrea|n #Sudan|ese #Somalia|n are there since months
@UN Following last week chaotic disembarkations, when many people were left without a place to go, yesterday "constructive meeting" with Libyan Navy + Coast Guard could underline the need to continue sea operations even if DCIM does not identify DCs for people to go. Image

More on #Tajoura #migrant detention center attack, located next to a building dubbed the “weapons depot”.

Here's more on the visual investigation with @nytimes

Check @trbrtc for background details
ImageImage
@nytimes @trbrtc Both @ItalyinLibya delegation & Dutch Minister for #migration have been visiting #Tajoura. They spoke with detainees subjected to ill-treatment, arbitrary detention & brutal violence. EU has ignored their calls to be moved to safety. ImageImage
EU should make a commitment on behalf of EU states to facilitate the evacuation of detainees to safe places, including outside of #Libya say @hrw @amnesty @ecre hrw.org/news/2019/07/1…

Due to the lack of concrete protection solutions, after days of waiting in vain, survivors of #Tajoura attack are now outside in #Tripoli. Only 55 people have been transferred by @UNHCRLibya to a safe place. Hundreds are at risk. Should smugglers be the only option?
Urgent #Libya
Survivors of #Tajoura attack, after days of hunger strike are now walking towards #tripoli.

As people life is dependent to orgs who are NOT able to find solutions, possible alternatives are: 1)die at sea 2)die under bombs 3)die in the hands of smugglers
Update #tajoura
Yesterday night ~300 survivors of the recent attack have reached @UNHCRLibya Center in #Tripoli. 4h marching alone as their requests for safer options have been ignored by UN agencies. #refugees are aware of the difficulties, but have no choice. Image

For imagery geeks. Before and after, 8k by 3K sats of the July 2, 2019 #Tajoura #Libya hit from Maxar Technologies now are available from. Dish @Maxar, are you getting into the OSINT/ @Bellingcat/ UNWarCrimes space? June 27, 2019 is "before" shot (left). epa.eu/war-photos/arm…
@Maxar @bellingcat Missing from the current conversation is the June 15, 2019 Haftar attack on Tajoura militia center...that did hit GNA armaments. This means refugees were being held in/near a military target. Don't confuse with Tajoura prison or former Tajoura nuke center.
@Maxar @bellingcat @malachybrowne and others are gathering excellent visual evidence...of what they know. But civilians kept against their will in known military bases/weapons depots makes them effectively "human shields". A question to ask #GNA and #LNA based on a history of attacks like these.

#Libya warplanes targeting the detention center of Tajoura, east of #Tripoli. There are reports of #refugees & #migrants injured and dead.
This is not the first time.

@UNHCRLibya refugees need to be evacuated. ImageImageImage
@UNHCRLibya #Tajoura Building destroyed, body parts all over the place. Witness confirmed 2 raids. Dozens injured brought to local hospitals. In Tajoura there are ~600ppl & in the building that was shelled ~120.

Refugees were caught at sea & brought back by the Eu-funded Libyan coastguard. ImageImageImage
@UNHCRLibya Also last May #Tajoura detention center was targeted by airstrikes. It was not safe and UN was well aware of that. 2 weeks ago @ItalyinLibya have been visiting the center. Was not clear that the center was eventually too close to Daman military camp?

It seems an independent auditor came to Abu Salim today looking into UN activities. The guards told detainees in advance not to mention that they haven't been fed for months (some of their families are sending them money to buy food with instead, which guards take a cut from). ImageImageImageImage
Messages today from Qasr bin Ghashir dc, southern Tripoli, today, where they’re asking for evacuation & any organisation that can help them. ImageImage
Sorry for my confusion, the teenager above was being held in Qasr bin Ghashir, but has now been moved to the UNHCR facility in Tripoli for evacuation. He's asking for help for those he left behind. Image
