How can organizations learn from mistakes and develop a learning culture?

A few observations based on my experience over the last 15 years at @WorldBank and other large organizations and some inspiration from @AmyCEdmondson’s research at @HarvardHBS. /1
More than a decade ago, I worked at the @WorldBank on using independent #evaluation results to inform future #strategy and #management decisions.

A big part of my job was to rethink & redesign the way staff & managers interact and respond to receiving evaluation results. /2
My fascination with this topic came from my graduate studies @thehertieschool & my 🎓 thesis on learning from evaluations @UNODC. I studied the literature & developed a framework. In my field work, I interviewed dozens of senior staff over months working there in 2006. /3

Los gehts in #Linz. Nicht mit Herbert, sondern mit #IC503. Aber "Herbert" ist später noch wichtig.
Der eigentliche Plan war einen Zug früher zu nehmen. Aber früh aufstehen ist nicht ganz so mei Sach. Außerdem wars durch die Schneefahrbahn ned ganz so einfach zum Bahnhof zu radeln.

Zum Glück hab ich in weiser Voraussicht im IC einen Radplatz reserviert.
Dank #CityShuttle Steuerwagen war auch ein bisserl #fensterAuf möglich. Außer mir war niemand im Fahrradabteil :)

I started playing #guitar in college. Some of my friends back home played, so I thought I'd learn. It's been years since I kept up with it. With no job and an empty house, I had time. Plus, I could crank up my amp. Ava would have hated it. All the more reason to do it.
Strumming a few chords or playing a riff through a loud amp usually makes me feel better. It's more of a distraction this time. My amp is a little old. Even a #ragpicker might pass on it. "If you're not going to play it, sell it," Ava nagged. Life always got in the way.
Or I got in the way. Not even ten years ago I kept getting sick all the time. Painful stomach cramps would radiate weakness throughout my body. I learned how to wash it away like healing #rainwater. That's when I really started to figure out who I was and what I could do.

#CSPC2018 @Joe_S_Sparling @CAPSACSP says you lose money for every year you train as a postdoc (on average). PhDs that go straight to the workforce are often more financially stable. Post-docs lose retirement income, forego wages (esp now they pay tax) despite high #talent
Due to unionization and internal funding, there are now more post-docs with employee status. This palliates some of those issues, but externally funded and govt post-docs are still behind esp since they are not employees, no benefits despite taxation - @Joe_S_Sparling #CSPC2018

Does #Talent expect differentiated treatment ?

Hungry People are constantly in search of better Restaurants for faster delivery of quality food.... so does  talent.
If you do not deliver #MeaningfulConnections and #ValuedEngagement to #HungryTalent in time, they go out in search for better #organisations to work for...where talent will be recognised, valued and served faster.
Don't then suddenly wake up & do STAY SURVEYS when faced with talent attrition
Generally,talent hates waiting unrecognised,for long time in serpentine queues.Undifferentiated treatment of talent blunts its cutting edge.Develop multiple #tracks

Don't let #joggers block #sprinters
