A Thread on "Trade Relations between Tamil Nadu and South East Asia as Gleaned from Inscriptions...!"

The Commercial and Cultural contacts between Tamil Nadu and South East Asian Countries seem to have existed even from the beginning of the Christian era!
#Sangam Literatures say that the import & export of articles between these countries had happened in great vigour through the ports located on the Coromandal coast, viz #Kollam, #Eyilpattinam, #Kaviripumpattinam, #Tondi, #Marungurpattinam (#Alagankulam), #Korkai and #Kanyakumari!
The author of the Periplus of the Erythrean Sea describes the ports of the Coromandal coast as follows. “Among the market-towns of these countries and harbour where the ships put in from Damirica and from the north, the most important are, in order as they lie, first Camara...1/2

On a midnight like this,38 years ago,the #Jaffna Public Library, onetime Asia's finest library with thousands of books and rare documents on #Tamil culture made of ola leaves were burned to ashes by Govt forces. #cultural #genocide #NoJustice
The women who is seated here on a partly burned wooden chair with empty looks in her face is Mrs Nadaraja who was then Chief Librarian of #Jaffna Public library when it was burned down. No one brought before justice for this act of cultural genocide against #Tamil community.
Following the burning of #Jaffna Public library,Mrs Nadarajah left the country. Her new book titled “#Jaffna Public Library-Then & Now” on witnessing this worst cultural genocidal act committed against #Tamil community by Govt sponsored forces to be released in UK tomorrow.

Quintessential Indian dish from southern India 'Dosa' (दोसा) has its origin in #Tamil word tōcai = rice flat pancake, which has reached us via #Kannada. dōse, #Tulu dōsè, & #Malayalam dōśa. Interestingly this Dosa was also borrowed in Middle Indo-Aryan as dhosaka धोसक.
Surprisingly this avatar of Dosa i.e. Dhosak धोसक survives in Eastern India in the form of ḍhuskā ढुस्का (a popular rice-lentils dish of Jharkhand & Odisa). This was in area of language contact between North Dravidian (like Kurux) and Indo-Aryan languages.
Perhaps the word Dosa has its origin in Proto South Dravidian *dōc-ai.
Dhosaka has been attested in classical Sanskrit in MIA period (P. K. Gode, Indian Linguistics 16. 226-31).

I tried learning #Telugu script and found it tricky. The methods I used to learn #Tamil did not quite work here because there are several alphabets with very similar "designs".
eg:
న is Na
స is Sa
ప is Pa
ష is Sha
వ is Va

Bad news for bad memory guys likes me.
...cont..
So what I did was to reorganize all alphabets as per similarity of design and then use the #Tamil learning technique in even more crazy way. Now I have an emotional story for each alphabet - mostly illogical. Hence it somehow it worked. Am still building muscle memory...2
Would love to share how I went through learning #Telugu script. I hope at least some will find it useful - those with bad memory like me...3

1) Hundreds killed and hundreds more wounded in Easter blasts at #SriLanka churches. While no group has yet claimed responsibility, targeting Christians is a staple of #ISIS attack directives (not to mention past attacks in places like Egypt).
2) To that point, #ISIS supporters are already celebrating the attacks as revenge for the military campaign against the group: “Just like the massacre of mosques, it is an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” ent.siteintelgroup.com/Chatter/is-sup…
3) While #SriLanka has indeed been mentioned within #ISIS chatter—along with members from Sri Lanka touted as being within the group’s ranks—the country has never been a prominent staple of incitements and recruitment to the like of other nations.

Lets have some fun learning #Tamil consonants. We learnt vowels in older thread. Like most Indian Bhasha, #Tamil consonants are also categorized by pronunciation.
Eg, in Devanagari we have:
क ख ग घ ङ्
च छ ज झ ञ
ट ठ ड ढ ण
त थ द ध न
प फ ब भ म
य र ल व
श ष स ह
क्ष त्र ज्ञ
..1
We need to know #Tamil for each of these. Plus a few special alphabets. And we are done!
Lets start with first set:
Ka Kha Ga Gha
क ख ग घ
Ignore ङ् for now.

In Tamil, we don't have Kha and Gha.
And Ka and Ga have same letter க
So we just need to know one க for 4 alphabets!
க is easiest to remember, especially for Devanagari and Bangla people. Almost similar to क or ক.
Visualize a straight line coming down and then looping up to CUT itself and then coming back. All this travel to CUT itself. Hence க is Ka (Pronunciation of CU in CUT)

#Tamil script has attracted me for long. Both round & straight alphabets. And I could figure out some similarities with #Bangla script. However recently when there was trend to write names in Tamil, I thought why not push myself to learn the script once and for all?
It took me a week to learn the script. Contrary to fear prevalent, I found the script easy to learn. Maybe because I already knew Bangla and Devanagari. Though I still need practice to be fluent, but would love to share how I went about it.
Note that I have not yet practiced writing. I have focused more on reading #Tamil. But once I can read comfortably, even writing should not be an issue.

#Jainism influence in #Tamil country.  The subject is so vast that an attempt is made now to indicate, only in rough outlines, the nature of such a contribution and its permanent influence in Tamil literature, gramme aspects, Tamil culture and the language itself.
It is well known that, among the Dravidian tribes of South India, the Tamils were the first to possess a literature. Unfortunately, most of the pre-Sangam works are either lost or destroyed or  not known to us.
If they are available, we will be able to know something about the religion, the morals and the civilization of the pre-Sangam age in the Tamil land. Poems like AhaNaanuru & PuraNaanuru which have been published late 19th century show that the earliest tribes were a warlike race.

"Orang Malaysia Ada Keupayaan Menguasai Pelbagai Bahasa"

While *most* South Asian Muslims use #Persian terms for religious concepts, Muslims in #TamilNadu & #Kerala (who trace their roots to Arab trading communities) have distinct traditions also reflected in their terminology, which freely draws from #Tamil/#Malayalam & #Sanskrit.
Instead of rozā, the #Persian term for Islamic fasting (itself a translation of #Arabic ṣawm) used in #Urdu, #Bengali, #Gujarati etc, #Tamil & #Malayalam speaking Muslims use nōmpu, lit. ceremonial fasting. The word is from a proto #Dravidian root meaning to do penance. #Ramadan
Sanskrit is used too. #Malayalam speaking Muslims commonly refer to #Ramzan as puṇya māsam, #Sanskrit for month of good merit. Nimskāram, the Malayalam counterpart of the #Persian namāz (Islamic prayer), is from #Sanskrit namaskāra (lit. prostratration, here, to a god). #Ramadan
