School districts around the country are dealing with a teacher shortage. That means there aren’t enough certified teachers to fill open roles. Here’s why it’s happening. on.LX.com/BWHs4ym #BackToSchool @AsToldByJalyn ImageImageImageImage
This isn’t a direct result of the pandemic. People who study these kinds of trends say they started to notice an increase in open teaching positions more than a decade ago. on.LX.com/BWHs4ym @AsToldByJalyn #BacktoSchool2022
“Nine out of 10 positions that need to be filled are to replace someone who has left. Most of the teachers who leave are not leaving for retirement, they're actually leaving mid-career,” said Desiree Carver-Thomas, researcher and policy analyst at the @LPI_Learning Image

Since we're back to #bookburning to supposedly defend children in schools in my home Commonwealth of #Virginia, I'd like to share the letter from Kurt Vonnegut that I use to teach about this very subject to my students.

"I am very real" 1/
Oct. 1973: Bruce Severy — a 26-year-old English teacher at Drake High School, ND — decided to use Kurt Vonnegut‘s novel, Slaughterhouse-Five, in his classroom. On Nov. 7th, head of the school board, Charles McCarthy, demanded that all copies be burned in the school’s furnace. 2/
The crime was for "obscene language" despite the book being a quintessential part of American literature. Many other books met the same fate.

On the 16th of November, Kurt Vonnegut sent McCarthy the following letter.

So, another week done. This crazy start means that for the fourth time since August, my teaching schedule has changed again. So, in between 5 family photo shoots (I’m masked and using a longer lens so distanced from the group), pit orch practicing, I have to do another year plan

I spent a couple of hours in my classroom yesterday attending an online class after an informal on-site meeting. It really is where I love to be. I want to be excited to be prepping my room for a new school year. 1/7
Instead, I’m worried. Our meeting was to try to fit together all the moving parts of in-person learning and safety. It felt like being handed two puzzles and asked to make one puzzle out of all the pieces from both. 2/7
It’s...a lot. Even in our small building there are challenges that feel insurmountable. We are expected to open full time, everyone in the building every day. We will do everything possible to keep everyone safe... 3/7

I showed my year 12s a TikTok video of Gloria Gaynor lip syncing to her song “I will survive” while she washed her hands...it was a PSA and instead my lot said they lost brain cells while they watched. Those who know me well, know how this story ends...#tiktok #teacherlife
I proceeded to explain the “meta” nature of the video:
it stars a 70s disco queen...

So, @gabbie_c told me about starting a thread regarding online teaching tools for educators that will have to work from home.

Here’s what I’ve done so far. Hang on tight. This is gonna be a lengthy thread #teacherlife #covid19
Earlier this week, I decided to create a virtual classroom model using Discord. If someone doesn’t know what Discord is, check them out @discordapp

The app allows you to create servers to host both text and voice communication channels.
Discord allows you to manage permissions for access to different channels within the server by creating and managing roles for users.

Each role can be assigned specific permissions within a channel.
