Good morning from Chiang Mai Railway Station. This is a live THREAD 🧵 of my two day trip in Northern Thailand. This is a package tour organised by the State Railway of Thailand and Lampang Rajabhat University.

[2] We came to Chiang Mai on Special Express No.9 which is a sleeper train. I got a full seven hours of sleep last night. Pictures show my dinner and breakfast in the dining car.

[3] There are 38 passengers on this trip. Everyone is Thai apart from myself. Today we are in Chiang Mai and Lamphun. Tomorrow we will go to Lampang where we will catch the sleeper train in the evening back to Bangkok. We have two full days on this trip.

Good morning from Udon Thani Railway Station in Northeastern Thailand. I came here on Special Express No. 25 (thaitrainguide.com/timetables/no-…). I’m here to write a @ThaiTrainGuide as part of my #RailTourism project.

[2] The highlight of any visit to Udon Thani during the cool season is the Red Lotus Lake. The lily flowers are in bloom from around November to March. To rent a boat for up to six persons is 500 Baht. The trip is around 90 minutes and he will stop at a few places. #Thailand

[3] It’s not that easy to reach the Red Lotus Lake by public transport. A Grab taxi is 400 Baht. You can ask your hotel to arrange a car for about 1,200 Baht. I decided to hire a driver for the day for 1,800 Baht which I think is better value.

The KiHa-183 trains were donated by Japan. They were then refurbished in the Makkasan Workshops so that they look as good as new. They kept the livery the same as when it was used in Japan. There also kept the information signs. The KiHa-183 trains will be used as tourist trains.

The trip today is a package tour to Chachoengsao. The ticket price is 1,999 Baht which includes breakfast, lunch and a bus/boat tour. #Thailand

🚂 Special Express No. 7 from Bangkok to Chiang Mai (8:30am-7:30pm). Three 2nd Class Daewoo carriages with air-con and reclining seats.

I will be getting off in Phitsanulok at 1:12pm. Ticket for me is 479 Baht which includes a meal.

[2] The seats on the No.7/8 recline and there’s a reasonable amount of leg room. The drop-down table on the seat-back looks reasonably clean but I would bring soft wipes. Luggage space is adequate if your bags are not too big.

[3] The toilets are clean enough. You have the choice between squat toilets and Western style. There’s a washbasin with a small bar of soap. There’s also a microwave where the attendant for our carriage is already warming up our meals six at a time.

[2] Our first stop is Phra Samut Chedi. This is the symbol of Samut Province. When it was first built, it used to be on an island on the Chao Phraya River but it’s now on the west bank.

Good morning from the Chao Phraya River. Today I’m on a boat trip from Bangkok to Ayutthaya which will take about 3 hours. The boat has air-con downstairs but I’m on the upper deck as there are better views.

Tickets for the day excursion to the beach cost only 120 Baht in 3rd Class fan or double if you want air-con in 2nd Class. I prefer with open windows as easier to take photos. However, this time I’ve booked an inward facing seat as it gives more leg room for this 5 hour journey.

Breakfast on the train today is my usual. Stir-fried basil with minced pork. The cost with a fried egg was 30 Baht. Not the most generous of portions but good value for the price. Anyway, there will be more food opportunities later.

Today I’m on a boat trip organized by the @MFAThai for Thai media to explore historical neighborhoods along the river in #Bangkok where foreigners used to live. The trip is called "ย่านฝรั่งในบางกอก" (Foreign Quarter in Bangkok). This is a live THREAD of the day trip #Thailand

Wat Rachathiwat in Dusit district was originally established pre-Ayutthaya. It was given its present name by King Mongkut who once resided here. Of interest is the Khmer style ordination hall with murals in a fresco style by an Italian artist.

In 1674, King Narai granted land in Bangkok to the Portuguese community to build the Church of Immaculate Conception. Later, Vietnamese Christians settled here. The present church building dates back to 1847.

Good morning from Bangkok Railway Station. Today I’m taking the excursion train to Nam Tok in Kanchanaburi. There will be a couple of stops along the way before we get to the waterfall. This is a THREAD of the trip #รถไฟไทย #thaitrain #Thailand

When you get on the Nam Tok excursion train, it’s important that you get in the right carriage. This is because the train also has carriages for the excursion to Hua Hin. At the junction, the train will split. We will go west and the other half will go south #รถไฟไทย #thaitrain

Tickets for the day-long excursion train to Nam Tok are only 120 Baht for 3rd Class carriages with fan. If you want air-conditioning, it is 240 Baht for 2nd Class. The train runs only at the weekend and public holidays. There’s a couple of stops along the way. #รถไฟไทย #thaitrain

To go on the train excursion, you must be fully vaccinated or can show a negative ATK covid test taken within 72 hours. After we had boarded, someone came round to inspect our certificates. Really it was just a cursory glance. He told me, just to make passengers feel better.

This weekend I am exploring the coastline from Samut Prakan to Samut Sakhon with my friends @chilipastetour and @DavidLuekens. There's a new road along Sapphasamit Canal that now goes all the way. My map notes for this trip are here: thailandphotomap.com/exploring-the-… #bkkdaytrip #Thailand.

If you switch to a satellite image, you can see that the coastline is mainly fish and shrimp farms. There are not many roads here. This section is actually in Bangkok. Yes, Bangkok has a coastline too in Bang Khun Thian district. #bkkdaytrip #Thailand.

The sun is starting to come out now on Bangsaen Beach. There’s a lovely breeze and not really that hot, but a bit humid. Starting to get busy now but not as many people as I expected. Maybe more later today or on Sunday #Thailand

Two of the main reasons people come to Bangsaen Beach is for the sea breeze and seafood. And there is certainly plenty of that #ThaiFood #Thailand

My hotel said it is about 80% occupancy this weekend. Which isn’t bad considering they only just reopened a few days ago. I’ve checked out now and will drive down to Pattaya which is my next destination. #Thailand
