Attachmnt Theory was, in its very origins, political. It was concerned w/ t emotional capacities needed for a 'democratic self'. A THREAD about why those insights matter now.
I read aloud frm this book last night at #DaringVentures, so ths is me now rippling out that knowldge.
2. The war in Ukraine has become a fight for democracy itself. I am readng many posts abt t thinkng of Russians, Belarussians, Germans now vs 1930s, obstructive UK leadership. All of this is relevant to Shapira's book. Democracy is not just a political systm. It is psychological.
3. "We know more about Soviet, Nazi, fascist selves than we do about the democratic self....Our basic notions of a normal self in a democratic society are taken for granted."

WHY is it hard for many men to appreciate women's terror? WHY is #NotAllMen trendng this morn re #SarahEverard ? A THREAD.
I write it because I believe that once you can MAKE SENSE of confusng things, they stop being so distressng &exhaustng. You're better placed to tackle them.
2. If you aren't a feminist theorist or writer or reader, it is easy to miss how far back &how widely spread t discountng of women's experience is, in deference to men's. Seeing ths breadth is hard, gut-wrenchng. But SEEING it helped me make sense.I was more effective w/ my rage.
3. Here is t result of my attmpt to SEE, co-written 21 yrs ago. Most ppl think of me as a 'baby psychologist'. They don't know I wrote a feminist text abt The Male Norm. But I did. (It helped me understnd even more t importnce of caring for our childrn.) Let me give some quotes.

THREAD on Boarding Schools.
@NeilMackay story features in this morn’s @heraldscotland . It covers FOUR pages. FOUR. Full of voices recounting the horrific abuse they suffered in such institutions, at the hands of other children, facilitated by adults who knew. ImageImageImageImage
2. I contributed to this piece. My key point is this: “If a large proportion of our political leaders experienced this - especially early boarding, which creates emotional fragility - then does that mean our country is led by emotionally damaged people? If so, we ALL suffer.” Image
3. My colleague @SimonPartridge is also quoted. Simon co-authored with me the set of articles on ACES & attachment published this summer. He said this: “Boarding school created attachment problems & could lead to PTSD.” Image
