The Northman is it a interesting movie. It's a beautifully shot film and it's a pretty immersive experience. But ultimately I think the story fails as it was a pretty basic revenge tale. None of the characters are good guys, just brutal Vikings. #TheNorthman
I think the reason why I loved the show Vikings is because it's ultimately about family and they show The human side of Vikings. Vikings weren't just blood thirsty animals. And I think The Northman needed to show more of that positive side of the characters. #TheNorthman
And I also think in a revenge tale like in this movie you should be rooting for the main character. This movie the main character is just a blood thirsty animal who ultimately ends up killing his mother. I didn't like that. #TheNorthman
Robert Eggers est un cinéaste qui sait me comprendre et m’épater, preuve en est avec #TheNorthman qui rejoue un drame purement shakespearien en plein cœur d’un territoire nordique d’une contemplation à couper le souffle. Une initiative qui divise certes mais qui m’a plu au final.
Je pense avoir compris ce qui cloche avec ce film… il a mal été vendu en fait. Car si sur certains points beaucoup peuvent y voir un hommage aux films façon Conan le Barbare, le long-métrage va bien plus loin que ça sans chercher à faire de la surenchère de bastons saignantes.
Pour mieux préciser ma pensée, Robert Eggers préfère réitérer ces obsessions sur le mysticisme et sur la folie à travers un autre pan du cinéma. Ce qui n’a rien d’étonnant quand on voit les proportions cauchemardesques du film qui font office de signatures (tout y est).
Okay so final thoughts on #TheNorthman. The attention to detail was amazing. Where it played on the Heathen spirituality was also accurate. It wasn't organized (as we understand it today.) The focus on Amleth, Olga and Amleth's quest for revenge was nothing short of awesome.
Fight scenes were fuuuuuucking bruuuuuutal. There were moments that made ME recoil and that's no easy task. Jeez! Robert Eggers absolutely indulging the hell out of his need to provide cinematography porn wasn't out of vain indulgence alone, it fit. It fit really well.
Those landscapes and scenes were well-framed, the story well-told and tight, the revelations did come as a genuine surprise but won't upon repeat viewings (not a complaint, just an observation) @bjork played that seeress memorably and did a very commendable job doing it.

Llamados en sueco Överhogdalstapeten, son una serie de tejidos hallados en Överhogdal, Suecia a principios del siglo XX y fechados entre finales de época vikinga y principios de la Edad media nórdica (esto es, entre finales del XI y principios del XII probablemente).
En el año 1909 se iniciaron las obras de remodelación de la iglesia de Överhogdal y en la sacristía aparecieron los tapices. Se llevaron a Östersund y Ellen Widen, la mujer del gobernador del condado, lo primero que hizo al tenerlos fue meterle un buen "fregao".
Uno de los momentos más impactantes de #TheNorthman es cuando Amleth lucha contra un «no muerto» para robarle la espada. Pues bien, ¿sabéis que estos personajes se llamaban draugr y que eso de asaltar túmulos para robar espadas es común en las Sagas? ¡Analizamos la escena! 🧵

#TheNorthman nos presenta a su protagonista como un berserker/úlfhéðnar. En la película podemos verle ataviado con las pieles de animales y semidesnudo, o practicando rituales chamánicos con una misteriosa figura con «cornamenta». ¿Quién es? ¿Existieron realmente? ¡Dentro 🧵!
Según la literatura nórdica medieval los berserker fueron guerreros que lucharon bajo un «trance furioso». Y esto es, precisamente, lo que vemos en la peli. Aunque este tipo de guerrero transmutado en animal es común en muchísimas sociedades a lo largo de la historia.
En Escandinavia estos guerreros terminaron asociados a Odín, el dios de la guerra, pero también de la magia y el chamanismo. En #TheNorthman podemos ver estas prácticas chamánicas de origen ancestral que llevaban a cabo agrupaciones masculinas llamadas «männerbünde».
#TheNorthman is a great film. It's probably the best, most memorable, and gut-wrenching I've seen this year.
On one level, *The Northman* is a "White Nationalist Epic," though, of course, the writer-director didn't mean it to be propaganda. But the "historically accurate" casting ... the Norse mythology...the obsession with fathers and sons and blood lines...it's all there.
That said, as White Nationalists are claiming *The Northman* as their own—and the media is squealing about this—something important is being missed.

First, @ISASaxonists revealed that her review of #TheBrightAges was killed for being "too critical" about the book centering wyte perspectives. I had been hopeful for the book based on other reviews, but silencing critical perspectives is unacceptable.
(I actually haven't had a chance to read it yet, since @HarperCollins never sent me the copy that I won in a giveaway, so that's my bad for recommending texts I have not personally read.)
Went to see #TheNorthman recently, and it has taken me a while to decide what I think of it. I think it was fantastic aesthetically. Its costume design, set building, and the languages were all amazing. But I left the cinema a little unsure of it as a whole. 1/6
A lot of the takes I've seen from Viking Age specialists have been kind of downbeat. I had some issues with the depiction of slavery and the film definitely took licence with the portrayal of religion and magic. However, the filmmakers are entitled to do this. 2/6
The plot for me was the downside. Efforts were made to show other aspects of Scandinavian activity, but the film was primarily focused on violence and revenge. While there's plenty of this in Icelandic sagas, I felt that the characters were violent by default. 3/6
Parece que está habiendo mucha polémica con la «rigurosidad histórica» de #TheNorthman y están llamando la atención los «brackets» de este personaje. Veamos, no son aparatos y, además, hay evidencias de modificaciones dentales en época vikinga. Dentro 🧵mañanero.
Se han hallado dentaduras en tumbas vikingas muy similares a las que habría dejado algún tipo de modificación estética dental o limado. Es un buen guiño documentado en la peli, aunque no sepamos qué llevaban exactamente en los dientes o cómo se lo hicieron. ☺️
¿Para qué se realizaron estas modificaciones o qué pretendían transmitir sus portadores? Es algo que desconocemos, aunque hay hipótesis. Os cuento un poco más.
