20 years ago, it was around 6 months that I had been in the US for the first time. My morning commute then was taking an @NJTRANSIT train from #Metropark to #NewarkPenn and then the @PATHTrain to #JournalSquare crossing over to another train to finally reach #Newport by 9 AM

It’s hard to believe this was ever a place for cars. The most interesting thing about the #TimesSquare transformation in New York by @MikeBloomberg @JSadikKhan & @citiesforpeople — it wasn’t sold as “place-making.” It was about TRAFFIC WORKING BETTER.
There’s lots of reasons why New York’s Bryant Park is one of the best people-places anywhere. But my favourite reasons are the many diverse well-defined “sub-spaces” as you walk around it; the massive number of moveable chairs; & the big beautiful shade trees on a hot, sunny day.
What is successful urbanism? If there’s a lot of people in a “public space” (it’s not actually public), is it a good place? New York’s new Hudson Yards development has been criticized by many urbanists, & defended by some, so I needed to see it myself. It raised many questions:
(1) I finally got to watch #WhenTheySeeUs, but the news interrupted: a "#terror attack foiled in #TimesSquare." A disturbing headline, but if you look beneath the surface, a very different story emerges, along w/ disturbing parallels to the #CentralPark5 nytimes.com/2019/06/07/nyr…
(2) The first thing that got my attention was prosecutor’s admission that “despite his intentions, he posed no immediate threat.” A man wanted to attack Times Square, but there was no threat? That didn’t make sense. How could such a major attack not be a threat?
(3) Looking at the facts laid out in the criminal complaint, things get a bit clearer. As paragraph 3 says that in "the course of an investigation...[the defendant] bought and received two firearms with obliterated serial numbers from undercover law enforcement officers."
Was the famous #AlfredEisenstaedt photo of the sailor kissing a woman who appeared to be a nurse, in #TimesSquare, on #VJDay, a #sexualassault? Contrary to accepted wisdom of the #MeToo crowd (whose goals I support, but whose excesses I deplore), probably not. Here's why: /1
First, it’s not clear who is in the photo. Is it #GretaZimmer or #EdithShain? #GeorgeMendonsa or #CarlMuscarello? Or one of the many other men who claimed to be kisser or women who claimed to be the kissee? It matters, because, absent a victim, there is no sexual assault. /2
Absent testimony, the law does not assume a man touching a woman on a photo is touching her sexually without her consent simply based on body language. It is one thing to #BelieveWomen women's stories, but quite another to PRESUME no consent. Luckily, that is not the law. /3
