1/n I am so tired of mine and other Native Hawaiian perspectives being marginalized because we support #TMT. It is extremely offensive to see outsiders, marginalized or not, trying to control the framing of this conversation because they think they understand the dynamics here.
2/n Too many times I’ve seen allies who read a few articles, think they know our culture, history, and experiences, then end up trying to assert their own perspectives into our conversation.
3/n This only adds to work we as a community need to do in trying to educate those who feel the need to be involved so as to prevent them from doing more harm than good. It is painful and exhausting beyond measure.

Alright ya’ll it’s time to catch up on the #ThirtyMeterTelescope & #ProtectMaunaKea situation: Mauna Kae is a dormant volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island. For indigenous Hawaiians it’s a sacred site. Building telescopes on sacred sites is bad. They should not do it. You’re caught up.
Could we learn some incredible things from this? Yeah! Is this view shared by /every/ indigenous Hawaiian? Nope. Does that change the reality that this is a bad move on behalf of science? NOPE.
I love science. Gosh I hope that’s been clear to you before this moment. But I can still readily see that this field can be hugely problematic. One way is our sense of entitlement to land, artifacts, etc., in the name of scientific progress.
