Oct 21 Canadian COVID Hazard Index and associated data are now live

All regions are increasing

1 in every 36 people are infected

Time to mask, boost, test is NOW

@picardonhealth @twpiggott @mustafahirji @RajBhardwajMD @JillianHortonMD @LabradorIce @AntibioticDoc @CPHO_Canada @KrishanaSankar @LisaBarrettID I'm not providing individual estimates for the number of people infected in each province this week. The situation is too volatile.

You should assume where you live is similar or possibly higher than the national average of 1 in 36 infected.
@picardonhealth @twpiggott @mustafahirji @RajBhardwajMD @JillianHortonMD @LabradorIce @AntibioticDoc @CPHO_Canada @KrishanaSankar @LisaBarrettID A major concern is how fast estimated first time infections are increasing.

Estimated new daily first time infections are now higher than in any Omicron wave except BA.1.

Most are likely people 40+ who haven't had recent new dose and no longer have vax protection vs infection.

The Oct 14 @COVID_19_Canada COVID Hazard Index and associated data are now live.

HIGH: MB, NB, NL, North, QC

Start wearing N95-type masks again.
Get your 4th vaccine dose ASAP.…
@COVID_19_Canada Technical changes this week:

1. A bunch of data we use to calibrate global parameters for some index data were released this week (excess mortality from @StatCan_eng and seroprevalence from @COVIDimmunityTF). We do this monthly, but when we do there's some adjustment of numbers.
@COVID_19_Canada @StatCan_eng @COVIDimmunityTF 2. After analyzing the excess mortality released this week (to the end of July/22), it's clear that we saw considerable excess mortality in fast-reporting provinces this summer, coinciding with BA.5 overtaking BA.2, and a steady weekly increase in infections of people over 40.

Press this week reported a ‘drop in childrens creativity post lockdown’. Well, stress, uncertainty and trauma can do that to the brain while it remains in survival mode to threat (in this case Covid). But what if we’re noticing the drop more acutely because the writing was on 1/
the wall already? What if it’s the systems & environments our kids are engaging in that is the problem? This week @KateRobinson89 is hosting the 2nd Imagine If… Festival which builds on the legacy of the late, great Sir Ken Robinson, whose seminal @TEDTalks 2/
“Do schools kill creativity?” addressed exactly this subject. Peter Gray Ph.D writes extensively on this too & while these questions are challenging, the discussions do need to be had (and have been ongoing for 20+ years, so perhaps we should start doing something & implement 3/

This morning we saw something we will NEVER forget.

We were at the #Walmart in Southeast #Calgary. We were shopping for some groceries when my stepson saw someone take a package of meat and put it under their shirt and then slowly walk over to their cart. #Food #Hungry #Alberta
This person had very few things in their cart. My stepson knows what I do here at @HarvestHillsYYC & he asked if we could help them.

I said yes we could but that this person would feel ganged up on if we all walked over to them, so I told him to stay here and that I’d walk over.
I walked over to where they had their cart and said “I know what it is like to struggle. I would love it if you’d let me help you and I’d like to pay for your groceries.”

This person looked up at me and said “did you see me take the meat?” I said “yes I did. I’d like to help”.

1. "Covid-19 is dead now, and finally we can live without masks and can reunite with our friends and families" - how happy does this sounds? Everybody wishes to go back to normal, for that please wear your masks. #WearAMask
2. Today, this situation is really out of hands. Our whole generation is falling apart. We have lost hopes on our dreams, ambitions, studies, career and all we want to do is to SURVIVE. We want to live. We want to fight this so badly. #fightagainstcorona
3.We don't want to see our future getting destroyed right in front of our eyes because of this virus. Some of us might be thinking, do we even have a future? Yes, we do if we stay safe and follow all the protocols. It feels as we have aged, without actually ageing. #GenZ

This 👇 is so true in the current scenario. I felt it to be #TooGoodNotToShare

#Vaccinations and the #PeltzmanEffect - explains why many people have become infected with the Corona virus after being vaccinated.

Let’s quickly understand as to What is this #PeltzmanEffect ?
Sam Peltzman taught microeconomics at Chicago in 1988.

The Peltzman Effect is a theory which states that people are more likely to engage in risky behavior when security measures have been mandated.
The Peltzman Effect is named for Sam Peltzman's postulation about mandating the use of seatbelts in automobiles - it would led to more accidents.

Safety perception increases risk appetite.

I received the following message this morning.

1/ Leaving pregnant girls & adolescent mothers behind is harmful to the continent’s development. Leaving no one behind means that African governments should recommit to their inclusive development goals and human rights obligations toward all children.
2/ African governments should ensure they adopt human rights compliant policies at national & local levels to protect pregnant & adolescent mothers’ right to education. Early and unintended pregnancies jeopardize educational attainment for thousands of girls. #TogetherWeCan
3/ For this reason, governments need to prevent them by ensuring that their educational institutions provide knowledge, information, and skills, so that pregnant girls and adolescent mothers can enjoy their right to continue their education.

Lamp of hope.
Five lamps were burning inside a house. The 1st lamp was that of Enthusiasm. One day it said, “I am getting bored and tired. I think it's better to die. Nobody cares for me. To keep burning is futile.” Thinking so, it got extinguished.
Seeing the lamp of enthusiasm go out, the second lamp—that of Courage—lost its courage and went out too. The third lamp—that of Peace—said, “Without enthusiasm and courage, I feel desolate and not at ease.” Saying so, its flame too faded away.
The fourth lamp was that of Prosperity. It felt lonely after three of its companions had passed away. Considering that there was no point in staying lit in the house without enthusiasm, courage or peace, it went out too.
