THREAD: As it is #WorldRefugeeDay and the start of #RefugeeWeek2022 let's have a little look at some of the common misconceptions, and plain lies, spread about asylum seekers coming to the UK shall we? 1/
Let's start, appropriately, with the common myth of "first safe country". Now this gets said a lot, but in reality there is no mention of first safe country in any internationally recognised legal instrument related to refugees. 2/
The closest reference you will find is in the Dublin Regs, which the UK has now left, and even then effectively first country of entry is at the bottom of a hierarchical list of criteria for determining which state should process the application. 3/

It's #WorldRefugeeDay and it's hard to think of a period when the international refugee regime has felt more under threat. It isn't just the government which is directly attacking the legal principles which were set out to protect them. 1/
Across the world refugees are demonised and discriminated against. Countries like Greece continue to operate illegal pushback operations which have already cost thousands of lives. The UK continues to enact inhumane policies, such as tagging and forced deportation. 2/
Denmark is attempting to follow suit and build on existing policies of confiscating asylum seekers valuables. In France both asylum seekers and those seeking to help them routinely face attacks from the authorities. 3/

Here @RedCrossPolicy we are profoundly concerned that the Government is proposing to send traumatised people half-way round the world, to Rwanda. People seeking asylum here in UK deserve compassion, not deportation 1/

We note the Prime Ministerā€™s ambition to create a ā€˜world leading asylum systemā€™ allowing ā€˜thousandsā€™ to settle here through safe and legal routes. However he doesnā€™t say how many, from where and by when. 2/
Whilst the Governmentā€™s current resettlement schemes may show some generosity to people from Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine, we just donā€™t help enough people from other countries. This is often why people are risking their lives crossing the Channel. 3/

THREAD:
Who are the real criminals?

The #NationalityAndBordersBill is cruel, steeped in #racism and it criminalises...
[2/19]
Lets first consider the sentiment underpinning this, it is probably best expressed by Conservative MP Bill Wiggin while speaking at the Commons Liaison Committee on Wednesday 30th March, addressing the Prime minister as he outlines in his view the ā€œrightā€ sort of #refugees
[3/19]
In reply to Bill Wigginā€™s question, the Prime Minister sighted the #NationalityAndBordersBill as being the solution.

Letā€™s take a brief look at this dreaded #NABB: When the Bill was devised, it was rushed through into official consideration containing placeholder clauses

šŸ§µGreat news! šŸ‘šŸ‘On day 2 Report Stage of the #NationalityandBordersBill yesterday, the @UKHouseofLords voted to defeat the Government 8 times, on several important counts, in order tošŸ‘‡:
1āƒ£Remove Clause 15 which would give the Home Secretary powers to deem a personā€™s #asylum claim ā€˜inadmissibleā€™, denying them access to the asylum system unless there are exceptional circumstances, if they travelled through or had a connection to a ā€˜safeā€™ third country (221-172)
2āƒ£Remove Clause 28(a) which would give the Government powers to remove people seeking asylum and detain them in offshore #detention centres (208-155)

This govt has just voted in favour of the #AntiRefugeeBill during its final reading in the House of Commons.

If this bill passes into law, it will punish many people fleeing from war and persecution for trying to seek safety here.

1/
It could mean that people fleeing war & torture, are sent to off-shore prison-like camps, stripped of their rights to seek safety & may mean they can never see their families again.

2/
We may feel at odds during moments like these, but right now it's more important than ever to take action.

Most of us want an asylum system that reflects the humanity & decency we believe in. So before it passes, we need to tell this govt we don't support this cruel bill.

ā€œA big step towards authoritarianismā€ @GeorgeMonbiot

The govt are excluding debate on new anti-protest laws

The entire Lords committee stage debate on new clauses was crammed into one late night

The Commons have been excluded & the Lords marginalised
ā€œThis is proper police state stuffā€

Priti Patel shoved 18 extra pages into the #PolicingBill after it had passed through the Commons & the Lords in a ploy to avoid effective parliamentary scrutiny

@GeorgeMonbiot decries the lack of media & public outcry. theguardian.com/commentisfree/ā€¦
The deeply-authoritarian #PolicingBill hands police vast new powers to fine, remove or arrest ordinary people who simply wish to peacefully protest

@Femi_Sorry explainsšŸ‘‡

@pritipatelā€™s new amendments contain new powers to ban named people from protesting

The #bordersbill is back being discussed this week. Not only does it break multiple laws, but is also puts people's lives at risk. As shown below, child trafficking survivors are already being effectively abandoned by the Home Office. This risks making it worse. 1/
Even the government's own Equality and Impact Statement on the #AntiRefugeeBill shows that it is discriminatory, increases risk to life, increases risk of people being further traumatized or harmed, and that it won't actually reduce arrivals. 2/ gov.uk/government/pubā€¦ ImageImageImageImage
Despite Priti Patel's claims that the UNHCR for Refugees had been consulted, it has come out repeatedly against the bill, highlighting numerous ways in which it puts people's lives at risk, breaks the law, and undermines the international refugee regime 3/

On the eve of the parliamentary vote on @pritipatelā€™s Nationality & Borders Bill which breaches both intnā€™l & domestic law, hundreds of protesters gathered on Brighton beach to show that they are #TogetherWithRefugees

This is part of a Week of Action against the #AntiRefugeeBill
ā€œThe BillĀ assesses peopleā€™s right to claim asylum based on how they arrived rather than on their needā€ @RSECEO of @RefugeeTogether on how anyone arriving by ā€˜irregularā€™ routes will have less protection & security & it will be harder than ever for them to come here to seek safety.
ā€œThis cruel & inhumane piece of legislation seeks to grant immunity to Border Force officials who are complicit in the deaths of families crossing the Channelā€

The UK is already the only country in Western Europe to apply indefinite detention. Rather than most people who are detained who count down to their release, migrants have to count up with no idea when they may be released. That takes a severe physical and mental toll. 1/
Now, instead of tackling this costly and inhumane process Priti Patel is looking to bring in new policies which are likely to exacerbate the issue and leave many asylum seekers living in limbo. Offshoring doesn't change this, it just shifts it somewhere else. 2/
Imagine that you had fled persecution. You have been have multiple challenges as you try and find somewhere you feel safe enough to attempt to rebuild your life, and instead of being supported you are locked up with no idea when you may be released. 3/

Drops of 24% applications, 58% being processed, 93% resettlement options. 71% increase in asylum seekers waiting more than 6 months for an initial decision. Irresponsible reporting by @thetimes to not mention that when reporting on channel crossings in such an inflammatory manner Image
Even the Daily Mail bothered reporting on the declines in asylum applications and available routes and instead the Times decided to once again rehash the same tired comments from likes of @NatalieElphicke calling for the UK to violate international law and refugee rights. ImageImage
The pandemic has highlighted that when you deny people other routes they will be forced into the hands of gangs as they attempt to reach safety. All Elphicke's proposals would do is strengthen the gangs by giving them a never ending supply of desperate people to exploit.

Home Office chief responds to that devastating long read by @trillingual.

The two pieces capture the central schizophrenia of pledges to become more humane after #Windrush while dialing up hate against asylum seekers in service of the Conservative re-election strategy.
We see this schizophrenia every day in our dealings with Home Office leaders.

I don't doubt the sincerity of their commitment to implement lessons from the #Windrush review.
I've seen at close range the changes in mindset when it comes to thinking about institutionalised cruelty & discrimination.

Some Home Office leaders even wrote to me with their reflections on a piece that @SatbirLSingh and I wrote on the #Windrush review
