BLACK LIVES MATTER
This is not “political”.
This is a human rights issue
and a public health crisis.
This is personal.
1/20
Police brutality towards marginalized groups,
especially resulting in the murders of countless Black people for centuries, is awful and also a symptom
of the larger problems of structural racism and oppression. 2/20
Yes, EDUCATE yourselves on issues of diversity/equity/justice/inclusivity (DEJI) and especially anti-Black racism. Do better going forward. We all are.
But also know that EDUCATION IS NOT ENOUGH. 3/20

1/ His name is #GeorgeFloyd and he said #ICantBreathe. I recognize him, #BreonnaTaylor, #AhmaudArbery, and #TonyMcDade--to name but a few who are the most recent victims of ingrained racism and violence toward people of color in our country.
2/ I likewise join the chorus of protesting voices in our country who are rightfully condemning a long history of systemic racism. I do not have all the answers, but in my new leadership role I can promise that I will work toward change.
3/ Rest assured that I will also continue to be a voice for those who do not have one and to be a safe and non-judgmental place for anyone to express their pain and frustration. #BlackLivesMatter

The murders of #GeorgeFloyd, #BreonnaTaylor, #AhmaudArbery, #TonyMcDade & many others are tragedies that have played out time for over four centuries in America--the result of generations of inhumane treatment, oppression, racism & injustice. bit.ly/justice-for-Ge… (1/5)
It’s long past time to address the deep, systemic, and structural inequalities faced by black and brown people. My @FordFoundation colleagues and I are in solidarity with those calling for safety, dignity, opportunity, reform, and justice. (2/5)
We will continue to support organizations that fight tirelessly for justice & equality, like @ColorOfChange @eji_org, @pressfreedom, and many more. These organizations are demonstrating leadership by lighting a path forward and drawing on our collective power, together. (3/5)

This #pride , we must remember the Black LGBTQ and gender-nonconforming people who are killed by people. The overlap of sexism, racism, homophobia, and transphobia fuels police violence against them, and the mainstream media all too often reacts to their deaths with indifference.
Just this week Tallahassee police shot and killed #TonyMcDade and then misgendered him. McDade, a Black trans man was also misgendered by local media that reported on his death.

A memorial fund to support his family has been set up: gofundme.com/f/in-memory-of… Image
Other Black LGBTQ victims of police violence include #KaylaMoore, a Black transgender woman who was murdered by Berkeley police officers who were called to help her during a mental health crisis. The officers who suffocated and killed Moore used transgender slurs to refer to her.

1/Some important stories we've reported on Minneapolis and the forces behind what's happening.

2/ How the Minneapolis Police Union—run by a "Cops for Trump" racist—kept offering dangerous "Warrior Training" after the Mayor and MPD tried to ban it: motherjones.com/crime-justice/…

A Black tgnc person named #TonyMcDade was killed by police in Tallahassee, FL on Wednesday. I think of #LayleenPolanco dying in her cell at Rikers Island the first week of #PrideMonth 2019.

BLM organizers have long noted that while masses turn up in the wake of police murders of Black men, it's a struggle to get a small crowd to turn up for Black women. It's hard to get any attention at all when Black TGNC people are killed. #TonyMcDade #BlackTransLivesMatter
It's more complicated than mere homophobia and mysognoir in Black communities--though that's part of it. Yet it's also about entrenched discourses about who police target and kill that leaves out survivors, women, TGNC people, and many others. #TonyMcDade #BlackTransLivesMatter

Tony McDade, a Black trans man, was killed by police in Tallahassee this week. I've mostly seen trans people discussing this. Black queer and trans people face the same antiBlack state violence, we join you in resistance, but who riots for our Black lives? #TonyMcDade
For me, it’s what the riot represents. Shared grief, shared understanding that we deserve better, and giving each other permission to display our righteous anger. When I call for Black LGBTQ lives to be rioted for, I’m really wanting that same energy to be kept for us.
Black queer and trans people have labored, loved, and lost right beside you. We've labored for you and we've loved you. We've lost our lives, both open and discreet, to the same state violence and more. When we fall, say our names at the very least. While we're here, protect us.
