Thread re: Republican U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn’s question to Ketanji Brown Jackson— Let’s talk about how utterly absurd it is to give the following command to another person: “Define woman”. The word ‘woman’ isn’t something that can easily be defined, due to the fact that 1/
it’s A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT. After all, just give it a try. Please just try to define the word ‘woman’. And as you’re doing so in your mind, I invite you to keep reading…
If you say a woman is someone who was born with a vagina, that statement is very obviously not always true. 2/
If any person who claims “women were born w/ vaginas” were to look at the person in this picture I’ve posted, they would *definitely* assume that she’s a woman. They’d *definitely* be referring to her with “she/her” pronouns and would believe she’s a woman. And they’d be right.3/

@Die_Gruenen Persönlichkeit ist nicht Geschlecht.

Breaking down "Biological Sex"

Tweeting this rather than replying so I can make a proper chain. Credit to @RileyJayDennis for helping me frame my understanding -

#TransRightsAreHumanRights #TranswomenAreWomen #transmenaremen #trans #TransIsBeautiful
Biological Sex is a human-created classification system for sorting organisms based on their reproductive abilities. The stuff that ‘biological sex’ describes is objective, but the system isn’t.

2/14
The most widely used model for determining sex is:
Genitals
Gonads
Hormones
Secondary sex characteristics
Chromosomes

These 5 things are measurable facts. But grouping them together under one system is a human invention. A model for understanding and classifying bodies.

Hey researchers, listen up!
Here’s a crash course thread on writing gender questions from a trans person who has designed surveys before.
We criticize this a lot, but rarely do we show what is correct, so in this thread I’ll do my best to do that. 🧵
Firstly, do you want to ask your research question about sex, or about gender, or about something else entirely? The best advice I can give is this: be specific.
If you’re asking questions about uterine health, ask if your participant has a uterus, not for their gender. If you’re researching gender bias, ask about gender. If you simply need sex statistics, ask about sex.
Think critically about what information you want.

I’m very thankful that the trans Twitter community has gotten to a place where we can discuss this, because this exact issue has had very tangible negative impact on my life.
As a transmasculine person who came out in adulthood and who has a history with very gendered abuse, THE major factor that stopped me from transitioning was terror that I would become the type of man who had abused me. I was afraid that there was no other option of masculinity.
While I was questioning, I found an online trans community to do research for myself. This community was majority transfeminine. That isn’t a problem inherently, however this community had an issue with vilifying masculinity and all masculine traits at large.

This is going to be controversial, but here goes.
Although I do believe in #GenderEquality, I don't consider myself to be a #feminist.
I will explain the reasons why in this thread... (1/x)
First let's look at the Meriam-Webster definition of the word...

"[A] belief in and advocacy of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes expressed especially through organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests."

(2/x)
This definition: ✔️
However, the people that call themselves "feminists" don't always reflect this reality.
Even if you are committed to improving the rights of women, you might very well not be a feminist.
Why? (3/x)

Today, March 31st, is the #transgenderdayofvisibility, my first since coming out and letting the whole world see who I really am...

I have been blessed by support and acceptance in my #transition, but I know that this experience is not universal. (1/x)
Far too many of my #transgender and non-binary brethren are shunned, cast out, or attacked, simply for trying to live as who they are. Even now, in some parts of the world considered the most advanced and civilized, this community of mine is under direct attack. (2/x) ...
... Attacks that seek to legislate us right out of existence. It is no wonder that we are community that is struggling with fear.

Despite this, trans people are showing how strong we can be; we are showing ourselves as the beautiful people we are, inside & out, showing (3/x) ...

Good morning sweetlings, beautiful monsters and fabulous disasters. A fresh day, a new beginning, another chance to try again. Another day to explore who we are and how we can help each other, lift each other up and pave the way for those to come.
We don't have to be perfect, we don't have to have all the answers, we don't even have to know where we are going. We can reach out with love, hope and understanding. Our hands to balance the unsteady, our arms to carry the weak, our hearts to give compassion and ears to listen.
When we open our lives to the endless possibilities of diversity, we open ourselves up to love, we open ourselves up to freedom.

Head out today, proud of who you are, humble in your approach. Carry a song in your heart and remind yourself that you are beautiful, you are loved.

Regarding JKR’s statement: I do not think these things of you. I do not believe you are not who you are. I know you have fought a long, hard battle to become yourselves in the eyes of the world. In my eyes, you are heroic. #TransWomenareWomen #TransMenAreMen
There are plenty more like me, who believe that you have fought and earned your place in humanity. What matters is that you feel you’re in your right place. That you belong here, that those who love you and respect you know you’re in your right place.
All that matters is you won the battle to be recognized by yourself and the people who matter. Both my assistants are LGBTQ+I people. @dualwieldstudio is also run by a diverse group of LGBTQ+I people. I love you, and them, for who they are, not in spite of it.
